The parents were fighting because they don't get along. That's all you needed to know and glad they didn't spoonfeed every bit of backstory the audience, expecting them all to be really dumb and need all of that.

also, getting back to what I called timing, there are many films that I watch and plain don't get why they were so big a deal, recently watched the pink panther, god it was boring. but when it came out, spy shows and movies were the hottest thing cooking if i'm not mistaken.

1. His father was an unfufilled musician and a drinker who had a volatile marriage.

2. Rival bands jockying for the number one position in the club.

3. Vanity was supposed to be the lead actress but he had to settle for Appolonia instead.

And we went to see Purple Rain because .... not only did we love his funky music, we wanted to see that sexy, hot little thing on the big screen. He did things to us - ya'll don't even know !

You mean the first Pink Panther film? Maybe you should try again. I also found it boring the first time, but the second time I watched it, it really made me laugh. Besides, any film with Claudia Cardinale in it can't be bad. love

he was cool and so mysterious, i never liked the cherry moon change of character, i preferred him as the loner, the misunderstood genius of the night with two crazy ass parents who were a mixed couple, my stepdad was black, my ma was white and they were crazy as fuck too, i could totally relate to the dude.

Very true. And to this day, the scene where he takes the baseball bat and goes crazy has always felt like - to me - that he was venting his rage on everything that had happened to him in real life up to that point. Always makes me tear up.

ya, that might be the only "acting" part that was super convincing, i don't care what no one says about Morris, the only good actors in that movie were the pros, olga and clarence.

that is really an interesting pic, the ice cream shirt looks a little fey, but that's probably what he was going for. the most interesting thing is that he's with some dark skinned females at a time when he was just getting the idea of crossover in his head, straightening his hair and making the most of his light complexion. You know, I grew up all around black folks, I have to say, the impression i got off of Prince in the mid 80's was that he wasn't really quite like the black folk I knew, he seemed to be more of what my black stepdad used to call "whitiefied" and his music was that way too, however, as I learned later, when the rumours of an italian parent etc.., were proved false, he was a true product of black culture and it was so good to see him embrace that more and more as he got older.

My family would tell you i'm the worst person to watch movies with if the plot/characters are the least bit complicated. For some reason when it comes to cinema i don't pick up on the subtle (or even obvious) nuances/details that a lot of films include. But even i didn't get lost in PR. Its pretty straightforward
1. The parents don't get along and they fight. That's not uncommon. It really doesn't matter a whole lot why they fight and don't get along. Same old, same old.
2. Morris and Prince are contemporaries in a town that apparently isn't big enough for the both of them. There is competition based on the fact that the club has an open slot for only one new act.
3. Apples is the new hot thing on the scene. People are always fighting over the new hot thing in town. It fits into the rivalry storyline as well. (See #2 above.)

ya, he was, but i've said it before, he used to make me think of those wierd black kids who hung out with white kids, just wierd in everything they did, they talked wierd, they dressed wierd and even today, if you notice, it's always the black guys that hang out with white guys who do wierd shit with their hair, paint it blond or pink, dreads, or huge unkempt afros, i don't know why but they do. anyway, Prince was not like that, he wasn't, the only thing he might have had in common with some of those guys is the role of being a true outsider whereever he went.

the kind of guys i knew were wierd, one dude used to work at a donut shop, he was a punker, I still remember some real ghetto ass kids going up to a window looking at that fuckers hair and just laughing at him, the wierdo ran after them. Even today, look at the kinds of black guys who sound white, who hang out with white guys, who have white girlfriends, they always seem to have some wierd thing going on maybe to compensate for being different, i don't know, i've seen them in music but even more in the fight mma world i used to be a part of, black dudes with blonde hair, really soft types of black dudes too, not really your typical "fuck whitey" kind of brother but really submissive men, maybe because they've bought the idea of their own inferiority. Anyway, the only thing prince had in common was he definitely was an outsider and a wierdo, the rest of the stuff, Prince was from a black neighborhood, a black family, he might have had a tad bit more contact with white kids than most because of bussing but not much. He was anything but a weak submissive guy like the guys i've know who'll do anything to fit in.

Some of that is universal and some of that is regional. For me growing up it wasn't quite as unusual even though some of those things were talked about, usually in hushed tones, it wasn't THAT weird to see it, yet there were some areas where it wasn't tolerated so much. It all depended on who you hung out with. I think that's why Spike and 'em in that panel were saying Prince may have been different if he grew up in NY or Baltimore or somewhere like that, the environment is different.

I've never understood why The Modernaires had a "secure" spot in Billy's 3-act lineup. If it were real life, why weren't they on the chopping block?

I get that it sets up the rivalry between The Revolution and The Time, but they don't even make mention of The Modernaires other than that one performance and Billy saying he had 3 acts already.

Another thread, (lol) but... Yes, he said that it wasn't anything carnal, but a few paragraphs before that, he explained who and what inspired it in detail. He said “Do you want him or do you want me,” that was written for that scene in Purple Rain specifically. Where Morris Day would be sitting with Apollonia, and there’d be this back and forth." Then he went on to highlight the lyrics that Vanity's departure inspired. He said, " And also, the beautiful ones, you always seem to lose. Vanity had just quit the movie" He mentioned her name in connection to those lyrics because her departure was the inspiration. Here is the article. https://www.facebook.com/...788385046/

Months later after that article was taken down - at vanity's tribute, Prince would even initiate that she inspired the song again when he stated: "She knows about this song" before singing it as a dedication to her. The 365 prince song article explains it. http://diffuser.fm/prince...ck=tsmclip

The Modernaires didn't have a secure spot. Billy says (about the possibility of Appolonia 6 performing at First Avenue), "I already have three acts. I don't need four. That means one of y'll has got to go" - meaning The Revolution, The Time or The Modernaires. Morris is lobbying to get The Revolution tossed because The Kid is his main rival - and he wants to control two of the three regular spots at First Avenue with The Time and Appolonia 6.

He knows The Modernaires are no threat to his dominance, so he's not after them - for now, anyway.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I think the relationship issues between Prince's parents are plain to see. She calls him out on being controlling. I think that is the number one issue and why the relationship doesn't work.
