Screams of Passion '84/'85 demo - lyrics

I always used to hear the lyric in Screams as "Leaves are falling, velvet splash...only you and I can under, only you can understand...".

Prince says on the guide/demo track "Leaves are falling, vulva splash..." Didn't know what a VULVA was. So, I look it up. Of course, it's a reference to female genitalia.

That Prince...always the lyrical sex addict!

St. Paul confirmed this a while back, because there seemed to be so much scuttlebutt about it. Prince loved him some pussy.

The lyric sheet included in the artwork of the album and single has "velvet splash." I just relistened to both, and I don't hear the "t" closing off the word, though I hear more of a "velva" myself. So I went to the rehearsal version--but I don't think he ever actually sings that line at all in it, even in that half enunciating way he does for a lot of them.

That said, the Family's live performance video from First Avenue sounds a lot like a 'u" to me. And some more recent performances of the song by fDeluxe are definitely not "velvet."

I was originally gonna say you were just hearing things or Prince was playing around--but as far as I can tell, no matter what was on the printed lyrics, everybody's always been singing the other word.

Yeah. Today I'm at my son's swim championships all day, except for a side appt at the sleep clinic. But don't hold up any leaks on account of me.

Susannah sings 'velvet splash' as in 'tipping the velvet' which is a reference to oral sex.
