Screams of Passion '84/'85 demo - lyrics I always used to hear the lyric in Screams as "Leaves are falling, velvet splash...only you and I can under, only you can understand...".
Prince says on the guide/demo track "Leaves are falling, vulva splash..." Didn't know what a VULVA was. So, I look it up. Of course, it's a reference to female genitalia.
That Prince...always the lyrical sex addict!

The lyric sheet included in the artwork of the album and single has "velvet splash." I just relistened to both, and I don't hear the "t" closing off the word, though I hear more of a "velva" myself. So I went to the rehearsal version--but I don't think he ever actually sings that line at all in it, even in that half enunciating way he does for a lot of them.
That said, the Family's live performance video from First Avenue sounds a lot like a 'u" to me. And some more recent performances of the song by fDeluxe are definitely not "velvet." | |
