There was this purple mix which included music from Purple rain and earlier. It was the first time I heard 17 days, automatic, lady cab drive and a bunch of stuff you don't hear on the radio.

I was on a mission to find 17 days. I didn't even know the name and I was looking everywhere for a song with the word "rain" in it. This was before the internet!

Finally found it as a b side to when doves cry. When I was at the record store I saw the word 17 days and recall that was in the lyrics. Bought it and was overjoyed when I played it. It was the first time I had heard the entire song!

"Automatic". Not my favorite song, or probably even in my top 100 but it was the song I was listening to when I realized how incredibly talented Prince was. It hit me like a ton of bricks!

Little Red Corvette.

A few others I had been digging before I heard that one, but by the point I heard LRC and couldn't stop listening to it I had to admit to myself that Prince had become my favourite artist (pretty tough for someone that had been convinced MJ was "the best").

I met a lady at a restaurant a couple months ago who just gushed on and on about how much she loved the Prince song "Could You Be". It took me a couple minutes to figure out she was referring to The Most Beautiful Girl in the World!

Prince was likely the best writer of his era. I just thought Controversy was magic when I was a kid, i'd listen to it over and over again. The work he did for the time was the same, I still remember, I was at an adult party, they put on an album by the time, I didn't know then and for a few years who it was but as soon as the needle hit: magic. Then of course 1999 then Purple Rain and I was a fanatic for life.

"little red corvette." I remember where I was when it came on the radio, and I had to stop what I was doing and listen. Had never heard anything like it.

I agree that he was the best writer of the major artists from the 1980s. Bruce Springsteen could give Prince a run for his money, although one could argue about whether Prince and Bruce are from the same era because Bruce became a well-established artist in the 1970s. Michael Jackson was more commercially successful than Prince, and MJ was no slouch as a songwriter, but he has nothing on Prince in terms of songwriting.

I wanna be your Lover..

I was 18 years old and one of Australias first Female Djs...

I was tuned in to Sly, Chic,Chaka K And Rufus,Sugar Hill Gang,Sylvester,McFadden and WHitehead,

Anita Ward, DOnna Summer, Amii Stewart etc etc..

Back in those Days Record Comanies used to GIVE Live Djs promotional Records..

I recieved IWBYL 12 inch from Warners with the bigger hole which was specifically for DJs at the time..

The first time I played it I was hooked totally absolutley..I even used to come out of my booth and dance.

The first time I played it at a Gig , I remember haveing people come and ask "Who is this?"

I also met my first Husband at a party defending this song.

My x was sitting in a corner banging on about How Talking Heads were the Greatest...blah blah

I interrupted and said Have you ever heard of Prince?

He said something Like...Pffft...no one will be talking about him in 20 years..Talking Heads on the other hand.....

On the Day Prince transcended..My X called me and remembering THAT day said to me...

"You were right..Prince was the REAL DEAL"

many good ones, many, i always say i was lucky to be a young musician with those influences. I think it's arguable who's the best but Prince is definitely in the running.
