I really love the track, but offering it to Joni is definitely one of Prince's more goofy moments. It's not as though he wasn't deeply familiar with her work. I know that Wendy and Lisa deserve a lot of credit for this one, but I can imagine Joni doing a beautiful version of “Power Fantastic” for example. Perhaps there's an alternative reality somewhere where Joni had a momentary brain aneurysm, recorded the track and had a mid-career renaissance as a sleazy, 40-something sexpot.
