Yes. And that's a great observation. The human struggle with our own egos. I love that Wally's glasses first seem like an arbitrary piece of conversation, and as you listen to what he's really singing about, you realize he's using Wally's glasses as a metaphor for the facade we hide behind when we're hurting. The song goes on about and keeps coming back to Wally and his glasses, but it's really not about Wally or the glasses at all, is it? I love that about it.

Superficial things that he thinks might make him feel better: freaky new glasses, a woman with a "beautiful chest and gorgeous mouth," being out on the prowl, and then ultimately realizing he really just wants/misses having someone to talk to. Brilliant!

I love this song. It is extremely sad. Something about how Prince is addressing everything to Wally. Almost like he is so deep that he doesn't want to directly address the person he is singing about so he is rambling at Wally. Heartbreaking and the guitar work buried in there is amazing. I would love to hear the finished version in the vault someday. Speed down sounds more accurate.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Am I the only one here, hearing humour in that song?!

"That dame is so fine": Horns play a line that sound like a fanfare,

makes me smile everytime I hear it.

"'cuz my baby don't love me no more, she said >Maybe I do, just not like I did before<"

Prince mimicks her voice, funny!

"Wally come and go out with me tonight, we'll tear it up like we used to do":

Drum roll on "tear it up": I smile

"And if I don't find somebody, somebody will find me",

not very depressing, is it?

And it's about friendship.

As if he said: "Hey, Wally ... I guess I need some distraction."

It's just bittersweet to me.

Optimistic sadness.

For real. This song is a mix of "quazi-jazz", cyncopa rythms and amazing solo starting at 03:32

Was it supposed to be that way? I highly doubt

It is like cancer to my eyes. I have listened to it ten times - and still my ears are bleeding sad((((

Prince was right not to release certain songs

I've only listened to it once but while I wouldn't call it "cancer", I do agree Prince was right not to release this.

Ive listened to it Once out of curiosity

Twice(let me listen and try andget the feel of it)

Thrice(wait...am I missing something ?)

Fourth time..Maybe the last...I agree with RodeoSchro..

Yes..we all have different taste..this is not mine..

I honestly didn't expect a song titled "Wally" to be among his best tracks.

It really isn't either.

Susan Rogers said that regardless of what the date on the file says, it was recorded after '87 for sure. She thinks it's from 1991, but could not say for certain. She is certain it's NOT 1986 and it's after she left in 1987.

[Edited 7/15/17 22:28pm]

The guitar does actually have an '88 sound. But '91 is definitely to late. Hard to say.

Idk man. No way 1991. Its sounds like it fits right with with In large Room or the Cant Stop, Girl of my Dreams, Crucial etc....

I think that it probably retains enough to allow us to imagine what the original might have been like. I do like this version though.

just like I and others have said... just think about the 2 versions of "old friends 4 sale" the original is way way better than the meh that was released... and I have to say it is fair to assume the cassette copy is worlds better too....

Yes, I accept the "Old Friends 4 Sale" analogy and don't doubt that this is a somewhat sanitised and probably inferior version.

I've never really bought into the “Wally” myth to be honest. Susan has always rated “Moonbeam Levels” highly and I've never been a huge fan of that track, so my expectations may have been lower than others here. As I said, I'm surprised by how much I like it – lyrics aside, I find it quite interesting musically.

I don't get it Moonbeam levels the essence of his
Minneapolis Sound. It's one of his best songs from the vault.

Loving this more and more. It lives up to the hype, IMO. The way it ebbs and flows between acting strong and not being able to act strong, they way he sounds like he's about to break down when he says "can you believe it?" and those "oh ma-lah-di-dah"s that cut right through me. worship

yeahthat Add to that how the guitar sounds the same way at the end. Strong at times, crying at others. I love it more every time I listen.

Seriously though, give it a few listens to soak in. Forget about what you heard about it being this mythical, exhaulted song - dig the second half especially. That 1985/6 magic is there, Eric's sax, the guitar, it's very Crucial/Adore meets Dream Factory melodic whimsy. fallinluv

Rebeljuice seems to be in the minority that don't dig it. I wonder what it sounds like? biggrin razz

Personally I love it but the sound quality is frustrating. How long will we have to wait to get this in a better quality.

Is this all that is out there or has it been watered down to reduce the quality?

What a great post. I can accept that some people simply don't like this style of music, but I feel sorry for those who gave it a cursory listen only to dismiss it. This song is deep: lyrically, emotionally, and musically. Every time I've listened to it, it's gone up another notch in my estimation.

I just hope that someone in Paisley Park has had a good rummage through Prince's boxes of crusty old cassettes and managed to set up a system in which each one gets listened to by someone with an intimate knowledge of the catalogue. There's still a chance that the copy he made before erasing the original recording is sitting there just waiting to be discovered.
