Whatever the quality , first or second version. I can truly hear Prince's heartbroken pain. The words are perfect. The music is to die for. Really. What a great track. It needs so much more listenings. There's a sofisticated great structure in it. All the breaks, fill ins... He certainly overdid this version. Thát ís the pain. The exaggeration... the unanswered love. The silliness and the genius. Singing about the finest pair of glasses... Wonderful Prince. - I don't need any more new tracks for now. I'll remaster it myself as far as possible, slow it down a bit in tune... - One day there will be a better quality I'm sure. This is a teaser. Wait and enjoy. I love Prince's music.

I did it in Audacity. I also think it sounds more natural 5% slower.

Back in the day, though, I'm pretty sure my turntable and tape deck used to play all my Prince stuff at the wrong speeds.

Yeah, pitch change wasn't having the right effect. It sounds like the source is more of a speed/tape issue. It doesn't sound either 'Camille' or standard on the leak.

Anywhere between 4.5% and 5.5% speed reduction sounded more natural, but of course we don't know for sure.

DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE.....this song is almost as overrated as "Moonbeam Levels"...once again, Prince knew exactly what he was doing by not releasing most of his unreleased music...

Well, "Moonbeam Levels" might just be his greatest song (IMO), and I'm loving "Wally" too. Different strokes, I guess?

Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

If you think every single unreleased Prince song is overrated or unworthy of being heard, how are you even a fan of the stuff he did release? lol

i CLEARLY said MOST of his unreleased stuff.... i DO like:

"In A Large Room With No Light"

"Love & Sex"

"Extraloveable"

30 minute version of "I Would Die 4 U"

"Adonis & Bathsheba"

"Leaving For New York"

other than those above, nothing else ive heard really needs an "official release"...apparently, the author of these songs agreed, on some level....

Actually Prince sometimes shelved stuff because he thought it was too good and felt there was some better future place for it. He himself has said he didn't push some of his best stuff to the record companies. I remember thinking "what the hell?" when I first heard "Joy in Repetition" in 1988. Why wasn't that out? One of his best. Of course he then did release it later but so unceremoniously and with such a flippant visualization in a weak brewed film.

This is a beautiful song. I keep playing it. Sad but sometimes funny lyrics. I can releate. Prince wants to go out to forget about his girl, but Wally has a girl at home who is fine apparently. Prince wants to know if she has a sister. The part that I can relate to is the part when he pretty much says let's go out like we used to do but if you don't want to get out that's cool.

"I'm on the prowl tongiht because my baby don't love me no more".

"If I don't find somebody, someone will find me."

Like someone else said "I got these glasses from Billy." lol biggrin

Well, I like it. I appreciate it for what it is and wish we could hear the original verson of it. Didn't Susan say Prince recorded it on the piano alone? That would have been quite something, I think...

She said that, but then afterwards he kept adding bits to it, adding and adding unti it became clear to her that he was trying to ruin it. Then he told her to erase it, she wouldn't, so he did.

RIP sad

Imagine the rawness from the piano version alone...

Avoiding the hype train (with some difficulty due to the past hyperbole for this track), I appreciate it for what it is & like it a lot.

.

Sylistically it reminds me of the much later Man Opera from the Deliverance EP. I love hearing Prince where he's channeling the muse without any pop pretensions, in more experimental ways.

.

prince yes wildsign

what are you talking about?

Has there been Deluxe version of Deliverance with extra tracks?

Yeah - like EddieC said (with great details), the full EP has 6 tracks total. Tracks 2-5 segue into one another continuously with recurring themes in the lyrics & music. Some sites that reviewed or otherwise reported on the full 6 track EP refer to it as the "Man Opera", and I think I've also seen it written as manopera.

.

It's fantastic. For me, it gets the "new classic" status. Wally is cut from similar cloth - introspective, very personal lyrics, and a rubato / searching sound that I associate with broadway (and the ancestor of broadway: opera).

thanks for clarification

I have full "Deliverance" and prefer "I am (extended) " above all

Now I know how to cool part of that album

Offtopic: my favovite album in terms of completion and music tracks harmonization is "Abbey road" by Beatles.

The only time Prince came to somehting close conceptuallly was wiht "Musicology" album. IMHO smile

That's entirely possible. If PR Deluxe showed me anything, it's that Prince did have a lucky hand in choosing songs for his albums. I enjoy tbe 2nd CD of outtakes, but none of them are as good as the songs on the album. Same with Wally. I like it, but I think Susan got us a little too excited. If she had kept her story to herself, we would have regarded this as just another outtake rather than "The Holy Grail".

Seriously though, give it a few listens to soak in. Forget about what you heard about it being this mythical, exhaulted song - dig the second half especially. That 1985/6 magic is there, Eric's sax, the guitar, it's very Crucial/Adore meets Dream Factory melodic whimsy. fallinluv

I dig it...very original and very Prince. I definitely hear the pain from the breakup, even if it was supposedly toned down from the orignial, but also like the whimsical quality. Cool tune. cool

It's definitelly a grower. I disliked the re-use of Billy's lines but man, that 'what am I gonna do' is some line!
But i think the beginning misses a part, this ain't no intro...

I think it's become my absolute fave of the leaks so far. Tremendous song. If someday this song is released in pristine quality (SOTT Deluxe, perhaps?), I will be a happy, happy man.

I agree with you 100%. I think that the sound quality is a massive issue with this one, as it makes it harder to appreciate the vocals (which are just stunning) and the guitar work. But as far as I'm concerned it's a great song!

Yup. This is up there with the best. I love tbe way he alternates between bravado and vulnerability. Isn't that just how it is when our heart is broken? We like to pretend everything is fine, but it really isn't.

Yes. And that's a great observation. The human struggle with our own egos. I love that Wally's glasses first seem like an arbitrary piece of conversation, and as you listen to what he's really singing about, you realize he's using Wally's glasses as a metaphor for the facade we hide behind when we're hurting. The song goes on about and keeps coming back to Wally and his glasses, but it's really not about Wally or the glasses at all, is it? I love that about it.

Superficial things that he thinks might make him feel better: freaky new glasses, a woman with a "beautiful chest and gorgeous mouth," being out on the prowl, and then ultimately realizing he really just wants/misses having someone to talk to. Brilliant!

The more I listen to this the more I love it. The more I actually understand what he must have been feeling. I really enjoy listening to it with "Eggplant" after it. It strangely seems like an an answer song of a woman who wants Prince while he is still in love with this other woman. Anyway it's just my warped sense of hearing things LOL

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.
