I'm surprised that the 1983 version is almost the same as what was released on Purple Rain Deluxe minus the backing vocals. Cool little ditty for the collection, though. biggrin

The overdubbed (circa 1984) version, that was mixed in 1985 or 86, on PR Deluxe, is still the best representation of the song.

.

Some of the added keyboard sections are a bit too cheesily and indulgently 1983 in this early version (and alternate mixes of the overdubbed take). And the keyboard parts altogether are brittler and less processed.

.

The guitar solo near the end of the PR Deluxe take is also an improvement atop the slinky but spartan synth production of the original recording.

.

Absolutely agree.

Nice to have also this 1983 version, anyway.

I think the '83 version is more distinct.

Cool to hear this version! I dig the tone of his vocals on this one - sort of a new wave feel.

ForceofNature

The 86 version is more complete and full sounding with the added guitars, different effects, and backing vocals. The PR Deluxe version is the best and definitive version in my opinion. This leak is cool to have though, to hear the early initial thought laid down on tape

Well joking around on in a studio in one thing but again changing the narrative again to be all about Susannah; according to them everything about that era was about her. I am going with Jill and the fact Vanity knew it was for her. This new thing with it being for Susannah is typical.

I am waiting for them to tell me that Purple Rain was really about Susannah and Prince not Vanity. I am waiting for them to say Prince wanted Susannah for the Rolling Stone Cover but Vanity pushed her way to the photoshoot but Prince had called Susannah first for the photoshoot. . . .

u so right wendy and lisa says everything is about them and no one else i have never heard more vain people in my life . yes they were close 2 prince and worked well with him in the studio but i think alot of what they are saying is made 2 fit what they want it to be.but brownmark and fink are starting to talk just like them that everything was about the revoultion. let wendy and lisa tell it the most beautiful girl in the world was written about susuanahh yet mayte just posted for the video cuz she had the flu

I know people equate the "rhyming" part of that end with Bob Dylan, but it's virtually identical to the INXS song Mediate that it's freaky (and, it pre-dates that song by many years).

Kind of a dumb question, but is the guitar solo played by Prince? The shreddy run at the very end doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard Wendy do on guitar, but other parts of the solo sound a bit too amateurish to be Prince (unless that was intentional). What little I've read about this song makes it sound like he handed it off to Wendy & Lisa to do their thing, but maybe he decided to lay down the ending guitar solo after listening to it later?

It's hard to know. My guess is that the solo is Prince. I love the guitar solo on WA...I think it's fantastic. The credits for PR 2017 disc 2 state the following for WA (verbatim):

WONDERFUL ASS

Produced, Arranged, Composed and Performed by Prince

Additional Musicians---

Wendy Melvoin: guitar and vocals

Lisa Coleman: keyboards and vocals

Recorded 9/84, Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA

Engineered by Susan Rogers and Susan McCreary

Friend JJ on FB, I personally tend to trust her version of these stories more.
She posted the original lyrics and they are in Princes and her handwriting.

That's right.

Actually that kind of octaver-wah-wah effect is classic Prince, but it didn't became a regular balde of the swiss knife before the nineties.
It's tracks like these that scream for an album of instrumentals.

Take the "Electric Chair" instrumental: it's awesome.
"Come On" a capella is awesome.
Imagine WA.

I may be wrong, but i think the track was just added to a bootleg compolation, nothing to do with Miles.

I do recall a 10 minute dub/ext version of the song, but see no meantion here..

That is probably because it was a fan edit as I recall.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/
