RIP John Blackwell

I´ve just read that John Blackwell passed away. The sad news was posted by his wife.

He was one of my all time favorite drummers with a very recognizable, unique sound and he always came across as a genuinely nice, humble person.

May he rest in peace.

Like many others I had the privilege of seeing John perform with Prince on many occasions, and he was a truly, truly amazing drummer. Word has it that he passed his audition with Prince by playing "777-9311" perfectly. And you all know how hard that is to play!

Rest in Peace, John. You will truly be missed.

Thanks.

His baby girl, Gia died in '04 I believe. I met him during the Musicology tour right after she passed. rose

John Blackwell is not only my favorite Prince drummer, but Blackwell was a major contributor to the recording of Prince's LAST TRULY GREAT ALBUM, "Rainbow Children" and helped spearhead one Prince's late career resurgence musically with One Nite Alone Tour, and instrumental albums "Xpectation" and "C-Note". Hearing Prince and Blackwell stretch on rock, funk and jazz forms was a treat to the ears. Rest In Paradise. Although I'm not a JW, I take comfort that Prince and John Blackwell shared the same religious faith and wasn't afraid of death. I'm thankful for the incredible memories John gave me

I didn´t even know he was a JW.

"Everywhere" is my favorite Prince and John Blackwell collaboration.

Incredible drumming, incredibly energetic, uplifting and positive song even though I don´t necessarily share the lyrics about finding the "truth".

Such a great song.

Him and Michael B were my fave Prince drummers. And I think his drumming was perfect for Prince´s music in the 2000s.

Very sad day. RIP

So sorry to get this news. He was the best of the best of all drummers. His solos mesmerized me and gave me goosebumps. An honorable man.

His wife was so encouraging on FB and Twitter - I really felt like he would recover. So sad to hear this is not the case.

John brought so much energy to Prince's live shows, and his signature is all over the studio work he did with Prince. He was a featured drummer for a really good reason.

My wife and I said a brief hello to him at an ONA show in Houston in 2002.

RIP and thoughts to his entire family.

I am so devastated about this. John was the sweetest. Watching him play always made me smile. Big Teddy Bear! Such a nice man.
I just loved his drumming style.
He is with Prince now, I just know it. He's being welcomed.
God bless Yaritza and the family.
