Glam Slam Minneapolis

I found these old postcards from Glam Slam. Prince came to the club often on Wednesdays and Saturdays. He had 2 private booths in the club, both on the VIP level. One was in the corner and the other was overlooking the dance floor. They had the main level with the dance floor and gift shop and the VIP level. They later had a separate room that was named Erotic City, for after parties after the normal club closed. The club was technically owned by Gilbert Davison, Prince's once bodyguard and now was President of Paisley Park Studios, and Ruth Whitney who owned the Fine Line in Minneapolis.

.

Prince did 15 shows at Glam Slam. Three videos were done there, Damn U, I Wanna Melt With U, and Get Wild. All were filmed in the Erotic City room.

I attended an LA Glam Slam benefit show back in 94' It was the same night as the VH1 Honors broadcast when he performed Interactive & E. Machine. I lived in the bay area & flew down with my girlfiend. We went straight from the airport & arrived crazy early. There was no one at the club when we arrived but then the guy who managed it showed up not long after us. It was literally 95 + that day & we were broiling. The guy walked up to us then said if he gets permission we could wait inside the club. Sure enough he comes out 10 minutes later with one of the old antenna phones. He's asking the guy on the other end if it was ok to let us in then he motions us to follow him inside. "Prince said it was cool if you guys hang in here until the gig." He was talking to Prince !! I didn't want to appear to be a crazed fan but I should of asked if I could have a word . smile I dont remember what we did while waiting inside but we immediately took a spot in front of the stage which in retrospect was a little comical since we were the only ones there. The show was off the charts & we were front & center for all of it. The highlight was seeing Stevie Wonder being led to the stage by Berry Gordy then they launch into "Maybe Your Baby". Seeing Prince on the floor playing the gold symbol guitar grinning from ear to ear because he was playing with his idol was priceless, will never forget it. Mavis Staples also slipped & almost fell off the stage which prompted P to say "Mavis I told you about that stage diving.." I also had Mayte literally kick me in the headwith her stilletos after we were trying to get her back up on stage after she stagedove into the crowd.. I also remember Prince being a little surprised that some of us knew the Days of Wild chant pre Gold Experince release.

I have been to the club twice. Once was the summer of 1993. That Graffiti Bridge wall is in the foyer where you get age checked or whatever. It was a lil' empty that night, but of course - money isn't everything.

I went again in 1997, once it became The Quest. I saw Morris Day & The Time play there, and Terry Lewis sat in on bass. It was a great show.

Wow these are great!! My friend & I were lucky enough to go on holiday to Minnie March 1994 & we went to Glam Slam. First of we tried to get in to Ladies night one Wednesday night with fake I.Ds (we were only 18 & 17!) but were turned away. One kindly security suggested we try to get in to the over 18s night, which we did! We were dressed to the nines that night haha & danced all over the symbol enlayed on the wooden dance floor. What an experience! Even managed to get a tour of PP on the pretence of being a band wanting to hire studio time (cringe!) lol So glad Prince wasn't there as we could have crumbled into a million pieces had we seen him lol Met the NPG in the atrium area. Ah such fond memories... 💜

I missed the First Avenue days, so the Glam Slam days definitely made up for it. If you kept your cool when Prince came in and his bodyguards recognized you from being around all the time, they would invite you out to Paisley Park for after parties. Prince was always dressed to the nines. It was funny because he would come into Glam Slam in one outfit and you would go to Paisley Park and he had changed outfits. I remember meeting Mayte in the gift shop. She was in all white and was with one of Prince's bodyguards. She was looking around and they carried the fan magazine Controversy. She grabbed one and started thumbing through it and saw all these pictures of herself. She couldn't believe it and grabbed a bunch of copies and took them. The clerk wasn't happy! lol Another memory that stands out was from an after party in the Erotic City room. Prince was with Carmen Electra and they were on the dance floor dancing to the remix of Madonna's Erotica. eek I could go on and on...so thankful.

So cool! Thank you for posting. I really appreciate seeing the interior and night time photos. I got to visit during the day in 1994 when I was 15. Wish I could have experienced the night life there. I was wondering if you could help me with some questions since you are a local that remembers the places of the time. Please see my post on my 1994 trip to Minneapolis. http://prince.org/msg/7/443132

I remember seeing the bike from Graffiti bridge somewhere on that trip , also Prince's lake Minnetonka outfit from Purple Rain. My friend Also said that one of the places had a piano that I wanted to play, but I was afraid that we would be ejected if I touched it. It would be great if someone could help place these items.

Thanks for posting all those pics! Did anybody else notice on the blue Mayte advertisment that there was an "erotic buffet" being offered? What in the hell could ever possibly be erotic about gorging yourself at an all-you-can-eat?? eyepop That really tickled me pink lol.

Thank you for clearing up the location of those items. I don't recall the piano either, but my friends story about it definitely sounds like me (I play guitar, but my piano skills are questionable). Did the NPG store have a piano? Maybe they were selling cloud guitars at the time, and she just remembered it as a piano. I also think the Lake Minnetonka outfit may have been a reproduction instead of the real thing. I found the photos of it and the pattern of the jacket and scarf is different compared to stills from the movie.

They did have a yellow cloud in the store. They were selling them. I think they were $5000.00. They didn't have a piano in there.
