I have read some fans think the lyrics in the P version is horrible.. eek

However since I am non english myself the lyrics did not bother me at all..

I find the Prince version absolutely fantastic.. (like written above). heart

The folks saying the P version is horrible are the same folks that listen to new prince music for 20 seconds, call it trash, then come back to it a month, year later saying how amazing it is after they actually listen to it a few times.

Not always. I love a lot of the music Prince made in his last five years, but I found this one horrible...

I love the song, however I will say it is 'noisy at times', meaning there is a LOT going on musically in the song. It could have worked even better if it was more sparse imo. But hey, it was Prince's vision, who am I to argue with that smile

I love this song and would love to see it officially released. I knew nothing about it until I stumbled upon the Prince cover on YouTube and was really surprised at how great it was considering I'm a hardcore fan and had never heard of it.

Crap soft Christian rock. Like something off PE, Prince at his worse.

I am fond of Prince's version. And Hannah's voice is fine by me. I like most of PE and What if.

I knew of Nichole Nordeman's song prior to Prince's version. Love both versions for different reasons; but the one consistent is the message remains the same.

Is all Christian music crap? I am not religious but I can appreciate a good spiritual song if it is sincere and well made.

Musically this song is okay. Lyrically, it is surprisingly respectful of those whose rationale and sense of reason makes it difficult for them to believe. It is not a song about checking your brain at the door. It is a song about reconciling your faith and your questions. It is a generous song. Smarter song than I expected from a CHristain song since most of them don't spend much time giving creedence to non-believers.

I am a non-believer in God.

But this song is wonderful.. I absolutely love both versions (and I just ordered her Recollection - the Best Of Nichole Nordeman from eBay -- because it was sold out, was a little hard to order a new copy of this cd).

I don't understand the sour comment from anton, true Planet Earth is a bad album from Prince, but still have a few great tracks (Future Baby Mama is a classic imho), and why is he (anton) hating on christian music in general, does he think its naive?

I wonder because the song itself (What If) this is a true pearl.. music heart

Not all but a lot of it has no edge at all. You won't find most of the music interesting. I can do without both versions of this song. Meh.

I love this song. It speaks to me because I have been a life-long non-believer who is struggling to believe in spite of all my "logic"

That's a problem of quite a few prince songs. Another example would be "Baltimore", It's over-produced, too many things going on in the background.

Baltimore is not overproduced in my opinion because it was attempting to be a rallying call. It needed to be big. If anything, the song improves in the second half.

HOw does one define "over-produced"??
