I love both of them. AOA is amazing, and a classic Prince record, but I still get sad hearing it.

Hit n Run 1 is still killing me that I like it as much as I do. I remember having super low expectations as it was the first record since Come that I didn't get the day of release and I read people slamming it on here. I STILL play it on a regular basis and June is one of his best songs period.

Uhm... DUH! Art Official Age! HNRP1 was great, with songs like Like A Mack, 1000 X's & O's, June, Hardrocklover, and X's Face but Joshua kinda... overproduced and remixed that album a little too much for me. To the point where some of it sounds a little generic. Don't get me wrong I love it, but AOA = perfection. Time & Breakdown alone is enough to make Art Official Age a classic for me.

Easily AOA, his best since Gold for me.
Aside from 1000 Hugs & Kisses, Hardrocklover and June I can live without everything else on HNR Phase 1.

Definitely Hit-N-Run Phase One... Not only is the album better, but the version of "This Could Be Us" on HnR is much better than the version on AOA (in my opinion).

MMMM, always Art Official Age over Hit n Run phase I - it's like the inverse Around The World In A Day vs Purple Rain, framed within a mortal coil. And now here is a string of words that will crash the internet:

Has to be HitnRun Phase One.

It's the one I've played the most and as much as I love AOA, HnRPh1 makes me do funk-face more.

I guess this is a copout....but I'm just still enjoying listening to his journey. I can't say one or the other yet. He had his reasons for putting out both these albums. I'm still taking it all in and loving his creativity.

0-0 draw for me. Both albums are dreadful.

AOA by a long shot. HitnRun Phase 1 has way too much filler and only 3 good songs. Only AOC on AOA is slightly fillery.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

AOA made me believe he's still capable of making great albums. It's cohesive, it sounds modern and there are some really great songs..well, except for the self titled track, that one is shite lol

HNR Phase I is the worst Prince record I've ever heard. I'm still trying to get into it from time to time (it's playing right now actually), but apart from two or three songs there's nothing even remotely listenable to me.

On the other hand, Phase II's surprisingly good smile

Oh my God, both are two of the worst albums of his entire career so it's hard to choose. If forced to choose, I guess I'd pick "Fart Official Age" because it contains "The Gold Standard" which is the only good song on the album.

not wanting to sound like my snooty old jazz teacher! I thought HitnRun Phase I sounded like what happens when you devolve too much responsibility to an as yet benevolent Artificial Intelligence!

Yet ironically I really enjoyed well-crafted chip tunes as a kid. Maybe it's the obvious sample buffer manipulation that doesn't do it for me, personally. geek

AOA for me, couldn't get into HNR1 except 2 or 3 few songs that. AOA was a pretty strong later career album, as was HNR2.

Both albums are OK, some filler tracks on both, I listen to HNR1 more often that's what my kids want to hear in the car. Made a ringtone with the bass solo from Shut This Down which gets quite a few heads bopping in the office.

HNR2 is the grown ups album.

But Groovy Potential though - if you listen to it on laptop speakers it's twinkly major piano chords and joyous then the bass gets dark later, but if you listen to it on proper speakers it's dark all the way through. I still don't get it.

Plus there's the feeling it's a return to the Loring Park sessions but with old words this time - that's what really did it for me - not a "back to the seventies" refit but just some Prince soul. Maybe he thought he was just impersonating all of his favourite vinyl flutes but if it's that good then why stop?

Well theres the thing. AOA is an amazing album and it too a long time to grow on me too. But there is a lot of very serious shit going on.
.
AOA is so damn real. That the songs are slow is not too much. He made his PLECTRUMELECTRUM I think so maybe less people would bitch about AOA because AOA he needed to be real. There are like 18 levels of pain happening. It is how it needs to be.
.
Even when FUNKNROLL happens I am like What the fuck is THIS? If like zomeone told Prince that AOA was too much and he had to lighten up a little. Which in my opinion wasnt the right play because the flow he had achieved. Itz jarring. And its on the other cd anyway. Id lift FUNKNROLL out of that playlist and leave as is.
.
AOA is NOT a pop album. It is however truly special.

AoA is easily his most solid album since 3121 and one of his best post-Emancipation. HitNRun 1 is almost completely disposable, but 1000 X's & O's is decent (tho kind of tamed by the production) and June is genius. I wish he just put those 2 songs on AoA and made that a stronger album.

I think the big difference is that AoA runs pretty smoothly, with a few definite highlights and not as many embarrassing moments as usual for 21st Century Prince. On the other hand, HitNRun 1 is just one cringefest after another until the last 2 songs.

AoA, because it is his last solid album which I can listen to from start to end. Although Hit n Run does have some good songs, like Hardrocklover and June which are my favourites.
