Different mix of Another Lonely Christmas on PR Deluxe?

I've noticed that the mix on the extended version of ALC is significantly wider than it's edited counterpart. Has it always been like this?

Stereophonically? Interesting! I was just now marveling at how good the ext. sounds, but I never listen to the edit because it's a crime against music. razz

Wider? Explain.

The instruments are more hard-panned to opposing channels. Have a listen to the first few seconds of the edit, then switch to the extended version. You'll hear it (or I would certainly hope so...)

Check the sticky on the main page.

Although I'm not sure by what you mean by wider, unless you mean the overt stereo separation, which has always been there. It was one of my favorite songs for that reason. Prince played with separation like that on stuff like "Pop Life", and "Anotherloverholenyohead", too.

I hear it as well, it sounds even more epic! He did the same with the Mountains 12" as well. This sounds a hell of a lot better than the old 12" rips also which I'm actually a bit surprised at.

I don't understand why people are rolling their eyes here. A new mix of ALC is fascinating.

I'd somehow never even heard this extended version. For those of us that haven't been completists, this release is like heaven.

.

It's not new. What's being described is something that I noticed back in 1985 when I purchased it on vinyl.

.

The biggest thing for me is that it's fantastic to have the extended version in digital format. There was no reason to include any single edits. They could have left all of those out and slipped in a few more previously unreleased gems, IMO.

Honestly, I appreciate having the Let's Go Crazy 7 inch. It's what used to come on the radio in the summer and it puts me right back in the summer of 85. Total flood of memories.

I, still, say the extended version is unnecessary. It's the only unnecessary extended version, I've heard from Prince. The added bits add nothing to the song. The original edit gets right to the point and is full of emotion.

WHAT. eek

You must have heard the 7" version first. I got the 12" in '85, and when I first heard the 7" edit on The Hits/B-Sides in '93, and how badly the song was butchered, I nearly threw my stereo out the window. lol

I didn't even like this song until I heard the 12" version!

Bitch Fest in A minor.

Nuances in sound? Good. It's about time this forum actually discussed the music, rather than the endless "Prince knew he was going to die" nonsense. Nothing is stopping you from starting threads with the content you wish to explore.

Damn straight. I'm excited when we actually talk about the music. Well, for the three seconds we can discuss it before people go nuts and accuse everyone else of being haters.

The only "bitch fest" that annoys me is from those that complain about discussions such as this.

Not dead, not in prison, still funkin'...
