Longtime die hard fan here. For me this is better than nothing. I love Wonderful Ass and it's great to finally have a clean version. I also love God the love theme version. Beyond that, I'm disappointed because the rest of the tracks are either mediocre to bad and Prince was wise to leave them off albums. Or we've heard the tracks before as bootlegs. Or he already released them. With all his many vault songs this is the best they could find? Why not add the non-Prince sing Purple Rain tracks? Like a Saturday Night Fever type release? What I want is an Under the Cherry Moon movie soundtrack deluxe with outtakes from that. The material here just isn't his best.

Totally agree.

Opinions... I think the songs are great just presented horribly amateuristic by non-fans, or people who shouldn't be tolerated calling themselves a "fan"...

Some good songs, some interesting songs, some stuff that should've remained unreleased.

.

Overall not in favor of this type of tomb-raiding. If P wanted any of this stuff out there he'd have released it himself. Or left instructions to do so in his absence. But it probably could've been worse. The disc is pretty listenable in terms of consistently worthwhile (for one reason or another) songs.

.

Fidelity-wise, this disc is an embarrassment. If they can't put together a truly 'release quality' package, I'd just as soon let the vault stuff remain in the vault. Releasing unfinished material is questionable enough, but doing so in this fasion is an insult to P's legacy.

Well, there's going to be a lot of "unfinished" material in the vault - at least to the point where it's questionable if a song was finished or not. However, a lot of Prince's demos are other people's masters, so with good stereo seperation of instruments, in a new mix, and proper mastering, the "unfinished" material can sound stellar.

This paricular release simply relied upon too many low-gen copies of cassettes. They are vintage mixes, of course, but I'm not quite sure that vintage mixes mean that much to the majority of P's catalog.'

He would have remixed this stuff himself, like he did the Crystal Ball set.

I've been a long time collector of Prince "boots" and have heard most of these in various quality but overall I have to say I am happy with Disc 2 and there is some stuff I have never knew existed (i.e. Electric Intercourse Studio...more on that later). Forgive the longevity...

Dance Electric - I remember first seeing the Andre Cymone video of this and went out to buy the 12 inch version. Listening to this song and learning it was original made by Prince was just one more reason I began to idolize Prince. With that said, I don't mind this version eventhough it doesn't have the guitar solo. The only version I have heard before with that solo was bad quality tape garble so this was nice to have in a clean version even without that solo. I don't mind it being long. Just crank it up and let it flow. Grade B+

Love and Sex - Never heard this one before so it was cool to experience it for the first time. Love the screams and vocals from Prince...sort of sounds like a song he might have wrote for The Time. Its not a song I go back to that often. Grade B-

Computer Blue - I've heard this version in bad quality and also the hallway portion of the song in good quality on the Fantasia boot. This version has pushed Computer Blue into my top 10. Now here is where I am going to rant about my biggest dissapointment witth this boot. Why did they leave off the extended versions of The Beautiful Ones and 17 Days?! You have the full version of Computer Blue but not those? C'mon WB! Grade A+

Electric Intercourse - Ok so when I first heard this on Spotify I was dissapointed. This is because for so many years I have heard the one from the benefit concert. My friend didn't understand why I didn't like this version until I showed him the vid to the other one then he understood. My guess is that this was an early studio version. I think the vocals are slighly off and there should have been that piano solo introduced. You guys who have heard the live version know what I am talking about. Had it not been replaced by the Beautiful Ones I think we would have gotten one closer to that live version and I bet would have stood up as maybe even better then the Beautiful Ones....wow did I just say that? Yes I did! Grade A- (A++ if it were a cleaned up live version).

Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden - I'm sure I'm not the only one that fast forwards to 2:50. Our Destiny eventually grew on me a little but you will find me going right to the masterpiece of Roadhouse Garden which is my 2nd favorite song on this record. This song just seems to have extra meaning with him gone..."this is the place where evil dies....its alright"! This song reminds me of another boot called Heaven. If you go to the 3:55 mark (my favorite part of the song) it has the same sound. Our Destiny Grade C and Roadhouse Grade A+

Possessed and Wonderful Ass - I remember hearing these early on my boot collecting days and quite honestly it was when I realized that Prince had so much quality material in the vault. Would have been a solid addition to the album. Give both a Grade B+.

Velvet Kitty Cat and Katrina's Paper Dolls - Meh....I was looking forward to these because I have never heard them before but was dissapointed. Not so much for the sound quality (which isn't as good as the others)...they just didn't interest me. Grade D

We can Fuck - Holy guacamole! So I've had a few different versions of this song in my collection but this one is new. I do really like the boot version that segues from Can't Stop this Feeling I Got because I just feel it is more complete and produced (ex. addition of horns and guitar solo). BUT BUT BUT....when we get to 6:15 of this song it just blew me away. It's Prince at his best talking to a female love interest when the song goes in this different direction with a beautiful melody as he starts confessing his love. This could have made for another song in itself. Love it! Grade A+

Father's Song - Would have liked just a pure acoustic version but this one is ok. Grade C+

Loved reading everyone's take on the song. Hope you all enjoyed my review.

That's exactly what I feel when I compare the 02/14/1994 live version of Days Of Wild and the studio version. Or Endorphinmachine (with and without cowbells).

Agree with most of your review. I like the throwaway Velvet Kitty better than you. Why not put the live version of EI on this collection?

JUST got mine. I've heard exactly ONE song from it so far: The Dance Electric. And I don't like the mix. Sounds kinda halfway done, or like the mix engineer didn't really understand the track. The vocals are low in the mix, and there's a lot of key stuff missing (like the GUITAR SOLO!!!), and this mix doesn't match the one he did on the original Andre Cymone single. Was Prince actually involved with this mix, or was this all done posthumously? A disappointment for this song. I was looking forward to having a nice, crystal clear copy of Prince's version of this song, but what's already available on YouTube exceeds this version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgon_BQWxHg). Damn shame. This one is a miss. My fingers are crossed for the rest of it.

Unfortunately, the 2014 leak of Dance Electric that's on Youtube skips at 9:10. Thank God for the old leak. The sound may not be as good, but at least it plays perfectly from start to finish. razz

I love Purple Rain Deluxe disc 2. It's a real delight from start to finish. It practically gave me a fan-orgasm. I had to dance and sing and laugh and cry tears of joy. It's a dream come true. I'm hoping for many more Deluxe treatments of Prince's 80s albums. razz

Interesting...I always heard about this fabled version but only heard the fan made version that was on a boot called Looptopia. I just don't understand why WB wouldn't include that and extended versions of Beautiful ones and Darling Nikki. They must have it but for whatever reason didn't release it. Doesn't make sense.

Believe it or not, this is the first time I've been moved to post in a forum of any kind. OK so I have been a humongous Prince freak since Lovesexy and have all his official releases (including all 12"s, save for "Sexy Dancer") plus excellent comprehensive boots such as "T's Twelve Inch Archive" and "The Work".

Perusing the comments on this thread during work hours inspired me to give this disc (listened once and not very impressed) another airing and I have to say it is a very enjoyable listen. I agree with other people posting that Prince is really worthy of the five star box set treatment as rightly lavished on fans of Miles Davis. That would be incredible!

For now, we have this to enjoy and I am greatly looking forward to a similar deluxe treatment of "Parade" (hopefully featuring the vastly superior and, in my opinion, definitive '86 version of "We Can Fu*k", the incredible "Data Bank" and the extraordinary "In A Large Room With No Light")! smile

P.S. Off topic but regarding disc 3, it would have been better sequenced as 7" a-side, 7" b-side, 12" a-side, 12" b-side (as applicable) as that would have made for a better listening experience, I think.

Hahaha this is great! What are the things on each of the buttcheeks, though? lol lol And it's kinda awesome to see the list of rhyming words at the bottom love

It really is great! No idea what those things are on the butt cheeks, but I wondered the same thing. lol And I did notice the list of rhyming words also. I noticed that "masturbate" isn't on there. Prince was one-of-a-kind, for sure! Gotta love him!

Just in case you don't know, the list of words at the bottom was added by Jill Jones.

To me it looks like he drew some nipples on the buttcheeks (to make them look like boobies too)...

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

That's what was so wonderful about it, I guess. lol

If you look here, you'll notice he just made W's into breasts, so I'm guessing he did that first and then changed it.

I thoroughly enjoy disc 2. I can't bring to words any more than already has been done by many of you. I've read many opinions about all the songs in this thread and I think everything that could have been said is said. Everyone experiences different.

I'm happy with it. But one thing has become clear to me. I don't feel with the same intensity Prince's music like it once did. It goes beyond the criticism about how something should sound. Somehow it has been tainted with melancholy and I can't shake it.

Perhaps it will fade, eventually.

I am sorry to hear that. Is it melancholy related to Prince's death, I suppose? I am sure in time it will fade, but I am glad I don't feel it this way myself. However bad it may sound, but I enjoy listening to Prince even more now that he has died. I have newly found appreciation for some of his work that I didn't enjoy so much in the past. I have let go of all my expectations and now try to enjoy a record for what it is. An example is The Cholcolate Invasion, which sounds much better to me than when it was originally released. Anyway, I hope your enjoyment of Prince's music will return soon for you.

Is it me or is there an annoying tsk sound the whole way through the Dance Electric?

Reminds me of an annoying noise all the way through Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World & when I bought 1999 on CD I thought there was something wrong with DMSR so I went and bought it again but the noise was still there. I had never previousl noticed it on my casette version.

Reason for edit: Forgot to mention the song title.

I thought it was just me biggrin. On a few of the tracks, it feels like there is too much treble.

For me, the real gem of this set is the studio version of Electric Intercourse. I was never overly fussed on the live version that had been circulating for years, but this studio version is just all kinds of amazing. So weird and wacky... and so Prince. I actually think I prefer it to The Beautiful Ones.
