my main gripe is this: instead of the edits and extended, I would have rather had a CD of extended and alternative mixes...which exist for all the songs as well as the b-sides

as to the 2nd cd A Maze Ing! I would have liked other songs but hell the cd is full so i am happy...

[Edited 6/22/17 17:28pm]

I agree, we didn't need that 3rd cd of edits... We needed a 3rd cd of other songs featured in the film such as Modernaire, Sex Shooter, Jungle Love, The Bird, and maybe others like Wednesday, 17 Days Extended, then it would've been amazing. lol

frankly, i do not care about the non-prince songs...but I am happy but several of those edits are on 4ever and having the edit and then the extended seems like overkill and as there are 4 or 5 edits of Purple rain it is not complete... but if i am honest I rather have him alive annoying me that he had not come here or if he did was charging too much...and being less than impressed with his new albums....

Agreed...

But why didn't they include All Day, All Night?? It was recorded the same time as Our Destiny, and far superior.

I would have loved if G-Spot, Don't Let Him Fool Ya, and All Day All Night made the cut on the vault disk. Those 3 songs would have really been a treat. Oh I forgot Traffic Jam too. I wonder if Prince ever put lyrics to it?

Just got back from the wrekka stow and it was there. Just burning it now to myitunes. Disc 2 first of course. Could not find the 2CD version though, they had no idea, searched for it and came back with an original abum lol

.

An extra treat was a stop by the book store and picked up a hardcover copy of Picturing Prince by Steve Parke, a book I have wanted for a while.

.

A more fulsome review will follow as I digest the genius. Love and sex, already - wow! Gonna listen to all the tracks I have never heard of before, then all the ones I have bootsof and then the songs I have heard and owned a bazillion times (Baby I'm a star etc)

[Edited 6/22/17 17:23pm]

Which wrecka stow did you find it at? Someone said that it was available online only thru Target or amazon.com

JB's Hifi - Sylvia Park, Auckland, New Zealand, Southern Hemisphere

.

Its 2pm on the 23rd here and its midwinter.

.

I don't bother with online stuff.

Initial ratings:

The Dance Electric: 10 (would be top 3 if added to Purple Rain)
Love and Sex: 8.5
Computer Blue (Hallway speech version): 10 (would be number 1 if added to Purple Rain)
Electric Intercourse: 10 (would be top 3-5 if added to Purple Rain)
Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden: 7.5/8
Possessed: 7.5 (the original vocal version would be a 9.5)
Wonderful Ass: 9
Velvet Kitty Cat: 7.5
Katrina's Paper Dolls: 8
We Can Fuck: 10
Father's Song: 10 (would be top 3-5 if added to Purple Rain)

Very Preliminary Review of Disc 2

.

Dance Electric - Great version and really suits Prince more than Andre

Love and Sex - This is great too, if a little overloaded

Computer Blue - Outstanding, the guitars, vocals, LisanWendy truly a highlight of this album

Electric Intercourse - This was a let down, the falsetto killed it, and the organ lines are too sharp. Still its very good, but lacks the spontaneity of the Live mix and a later Boot I have of it.

Our Destiny/RoadHouse Garden - Roadhouse Garden is outstanding and an early favourite. Our Destiny is still good, but sound is not that great and the first two seconds have a dropout.

Possessed - Another highlight, many twists and turns, the sound quality makes me realise how much genius this song is, just incredible stuff. And that beat is in the movie when Apollonia is finding the guts to speak to the Kid who is behind her and he is licking his lips, while Morris is chatting up lil sexies on standby at the bar.

Wonderful Ass - This is a great upbeat song too, the version is good even above several high quality and polished bootleg versions of it I have. But I suspect this version is Parade rather than Purple Rain era, sounds very 1985/86ish.

Velvet Kitty Kat - It's alright and a catchy little pop tune, but musically slight next to some of the monsters on this album.

Katrina's Paper Dolls - I like this, it has a dark theme and feel (Abandonment and loneliness) good gravitas and emotion and great keys throughout.

We can fuck - I mean wow cubed! This is great, all the best bits of we can funk without the ridiculous overdubs and some more sex for good measure. I love the talking bit and the fact he is reaching sexual delirium. I definitely see this inspiring Temptation, yet this is so much better, and he whispers "We can fuck" rather than shout it. Sexy and Classy.

Fathers Song - Okay the 3 seconds of talking is WTF, who is editing this - but the rest is just incredible, the emotion of his playing and the passion. seriously genius stuff here. Made me cry thinking of how we have lost this colossus of music.

.

Overall 10/10 - These out takes overwhelm the original album and prove he was a genius. It is a serious contender for Purple Rain. The sound throughout is incredible and even the original album sounds sharper, louder and brighter (Although not perfect - some muddiness in songs like Take me with u). I am in love and this could tackle Sign o the Times for best album of Prince ever. Still I agree with yous, where is Modernaire, Sex Shooter etc

.

Best songs

1. We can fuck - Is there any contest

2. Computer Blue Extended - I mean wow

3. Possessed - Again...

4. Fathers Song ..... Just evocative and beautiful. In amongst sex and rock and roll, we have beauty.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I was expecting Our Destiny to suck the way people were trashing it here, but it's one of my favorites now!

Velvet Kitty Cat is infectious, I think Prince was listing to My Sharona when he made that one.

Father's Song is a moving intro to the kickass Computer Blue Hallway Speech version that extends the shredding in the most opportune way imaginable.

I love the whole thing with the exception of Katrina's Paper Dolls (boring!)

It's like Prince just released a brand new album as far as I'm concerned. Another Lonely Christmas hit me in the feels with it's fresh sonic clarity. Wonderful Ass makes for fun foreplay...ahem

The Dance Electric is mad funky, Prince's adlibs at the end are golden lol

God (Love Theme from Purple Rain) is the perfect closer for my playlist.

I am now fully acclimatised to the studio version of Electric Intercourse and possibly prefer it. Obviously ideally both would be released.

I totally agree, it is very haunting and evocative. I think we may share the same ears Ian!

.

Also the extended version of God is great, I never had the 12 inch of Purple Rain, so did not know of it not being anywhere other than the Apollonia sex scene in the movie and a boot of the Purple Rain film score. I just love it, such beautiful music. The whole 3cd's music are just a non stop orgasm of joy for me.

Ok..Jill Jones is not happy. Who can pick out her uncredited box on the album? I'm guessing that's her on We Can F***. Is she in The somewhere in the mix on Dance Electric? Wonderful Ass?

This. I find the edits pointless, and the Let's Go Crazy one is painful to listen to. B sides are essential, but the edits? Really, really not (especially since most of them were in 4ever).
Disc 2, though...

Not all the 7" versions were on Prince 4ever, we'd be moaning if they left some out. You're confusing what you want with what they're willing and able to give, as if they had the bass-line version of When Doves Cry just sitting there and they decided to put on the Purple Rain 7" instead.

Upon a very first quick listen, I am very disappointed with Possessed. After listening to the bootleg version for years, this version lacks all of the passion and desperation of the lyrics and seems more like a jam than an actual song.

You could really hear him going crazy in the actual 83 version over his obsession. The one on here has none of that. It really kills the whole meaning of the lyrics for me.

OK, finally listened from start to end to disk 1 and disk 2.

I'm not audiophile, but all in all I find the new album remaster well done.

It's not perfect but it is clear and powerful.
Nothing to thank God for, but also nothing to trash.

But for me what really matter was disk 2.

I could have paid double the price of the Expanded released for the"From The Vault & Unreleased" CD alone and still I would be happy like a children.

Come on.... it is the Disneyland of the P 1983/1984 outtakes!
So many titles known for years and listened to in bad sound quality now collected as a jewels parade.

"The Dance Electric" is wonderful, and I'm happy it is the Prince solo version since the Revolution version was already available in great quality.

"Love & Sex" is the unknown song I was interested more in, and even if musically it doesn't stand in the same category of other outtakes it is still a nice little jam. Somewhat unfocused, but still enjoyable.

We all knew "Computer Blue (Hallway Speech)" so nothing to said apart that I'm grateful to have it finally in this sound quality.

"Electric Intercourse" is another gem, I absolutely prefer this studio version to the live version.

"Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden": as all I can detect that here the sound quality is not on the others standard, but I'm still proud of the inclusion of them, better to have them that not.

Musically I think they are lacking something (particularly RG, after comparison with the live version) but still a nice addition to the P canon.

"Possessed": to be clear I like it. Much. Very much. Nice to have it.
But I have to be honest and say that I would have preferred the inclusion of the 1983 version instead of this.

I find this version a little too "urgent" and mechanic, and also somewhat repetitive.
I like when P stretch a single song to long lenght (I already talked of TDE and CB) but here I find that the 7:40 minutes are not musically sustained by the necessary ideas.
An edit to 4/5 minutes could be more functional to the track's efficacy.
But I imagine here I'm in a minority to think so.

"Wonderful Ass": one of my ever favourite P outtakes finally in official quality.
Nothing to add. Gorgeous.

"Velvet Kitty Cat": probably the less interesting track of the CD. Obviously a demo.

Grateful for its inclusion for historical reason, but I can't say I will return many time to it.

"Katrina's Paper Dolls": better than VKC but still uneventful when placed in a CD containing "holy grails". I will give it more listen to absorb it, maybe it will grown on me.

"We Can Fuck".
I never hoped to be able to listen to this version. Wow.
Near perfection. It avoid all defects that married the GB version (overproduction) and the "insane" instrumentation and vocal works give it the hint of a masterpiece.
The real surprise of the set.

"Father's Song": again, gorgeous.

An excursion in an unusual musical land for P standards, very evocative.
One of the time in which a song long desired stand up to what I was waiting for, differently but magically the same.

I agree.I wish they had included the (heavily bootlegged) 1983 version in this set, even though we have heard it for years. It's simply a better version of the song.
