Regardless if discs 2 and 3 are remastered or not, the booklet claims disc 2 and 3 are "remastered by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, Hollywood, CA"

This would suggest that Dr Funkenberry is correct and that Joshua Welton has engineered the mastering of Purple Rain in 2015. I am absolutely shocked to hear that a record of this magnitude has been engineered by someone so inexperienced.

From what I hear, I think Josh did a good job for someone who is inexperienced
Though I don't know much about audio, quality, etc

the people complaining about sound quality here are a bunch of babies. Some great music was recorded on much more primitive equipement than what we have here. Elvis' early sessions stand with anyone's, ANYONE'S, strongest work and that was done on some really basic stuff. It doesn't take away the power of the art whether you listen to it on a 45 or a cd that's been remastered for the zillionth time.

That's beceause less is often more.

Doctoring the life out of an album often ruins it.

Totally agree! His work is awesome, but people do like to complain and find fault.

I guarantee a week after release you won't hear anything about this release. By then people will have moved on to complaining about the next release.

Sadly this is the lifecycle of some Prince fans!

smile

people who do not appreciate great sound just will not understand how important dynamic range is. If you ever listen to Pink Floyd's stuff or Miles Davis classic stuff...you will see what i'm talking about.

Agreed. I remember reading stuff about something called "The Loudness Wars" maybe 10 or 15 years ago and that graph that was posted is a prime example. Everything can't be out in front in a proper mix (then everything sounds like a KISS record) but that seems to be what CD's ultimately gave us and why vinyl sounds so much better.

Yes, Discogs is usually accurate with this kind of info. Well, that explains the bad mastering on CD1 compared to CD 2 and 3. Josh Welton was also reponsible for Art Official Age and HitNRun Phase One, two of the most compressed/brickwalled albums Prince released...

Who gives a shit who mastered what?

Are you enjoying the set? Hurrah!

Are you getting all OCD and wanting to pick apart every technical element of this release and therefore marring your enjoyment of just laying back and enjoying the music? Your problem.

Some people see a bed and know they're going to enjoy a good nights sleep.

And they will sleep well.

Others observe that the bedding isn't egyptian cotton, one of the bedsprings is faulty and the pillow isn't as soft as they'd like.

Those people won't sleep and it'll be their own fault.

It is what it is.

Over compressed music and the loudness wars isn't "our own fault". No offense to those who either don't understand or don't care about the loudness wars and its impact, but it really does make a negative impact on the overall fidelity of the audio. Some people actually care about audio fidelity

Apart from the ending of Let's Go Crazy I think the PR remaster sounds great. A definite improvement on the original CD. But that ending of LGC, that is some badly distorted, shocking shit.

RIP sad

There must be a reason why he left al lot of the imperfections untouched. He must of had a method to his madness....I think he purposefully ignored the drop outs and crinkles like this and focused more on the frequencies and ensuring tracks remained faithful to the original tapes he was given by WB.

We do not know what the orginal state of the WB recordings were when they were given to him.

I disagree although depends what headphones/speakers you are listening on.

Listened to 'Lets Go Crazy' on Disc 1. Its sounds a lot brighter and amped up compared to my original Purple Rain CD.

On my B&O H6 Headphones which have neutral sound...the treble on Lets Go Crazy is slightly harsh...its obvious Joshua Welton is trying to compensate for all those people with common bass heavey headphones e.g Beats.

Even on my H6 Headphones which have a wide soundstage the music sounds cramped.

Like I said in another thread I'm glad I'm not an audiophile as I'd probably never enjoy anything. I got this last night on iTunes and have been enjoying it ever since.

Why on earth would you come into a thread whose topic doesn't interest you and demand people stop discussing it?

i've got it, listening to it now, i'm in a coffee shop with phones on, i don't hear anything dramatically different though. and in truth, i got it for the extras, not the remastered cd. on this topic though, i did notice when i bought parade off of itunes, there was more bass than was on the vinyl, being a big mark brown fan, i loved that.

According to the liner notes, disc 2 & 3 were remastered by Bernie. It does mention that the original album was mastered by Bernie but that this version was remastered by Prince with Joshua Welton engineering.
