You all are absolutely right - each song should have its own thread. Nobody is discussing Farher's Song because quite frankly it is not possible to discuss a song with everything else going on.
I hope after the album is released they create some sensible stickies (one for each song, one for reviews). Otherwise it will be just ridiculous..

Obviously I'm talking only of the twelve songs in disc two. It makes sense.

This is going to sound batty, but I am starting to entertain the possibility that I might end up enjoying Disc 2 better than the original Purple Rain album. eek

Don't get me wrong - I love Purple Rain. It's a 5-star record for me. But "Electric Intercourse" and "Father's Song" have blown me away so much, that coupled with existing masterpieces in my mind such as "The Dance Electric" and "Computer Blue (Hallway Speech version)", this second disc is lining up to be extraordinary. Wild cards like the apparently unheard version of "Possessed", "Katrina's Paper Dolls", "We Can Fuck", and "Love and Sex" will probably be what decides it for me. If they are on par with "Father's Song" and "Electric Intercourse", this will become a serious question. I expect that I'll still end up preferring the album proper, and the songs on Disc 2 won't gel like a proper Prince album, but song for song, this is going to be interesting.

To me "Purple Rain" is "Purple Rain", simply one of the better album ever released not only by P. but in music history.

Anyway I'm with you on the excitement for the 2nd disc.

Sometimes here I read of debates for sound quality, this/that "wrong" version released, etc. but I can't think of a "80's fan" not feeling this release as a dream becaming truth.

The tracklist is gorgeous and includes some titles I was hoping for an official release from almost thirty years.

Yes, one could be thankful.

But OTOH look at http://www.rollingstone.c...ic-w466431 again.

Were they lying?

Does that matter?

We got something materially different.

Honestly, I don't care of the "two unreleased albums" press mistake.

What I know is that I'm thankful to finally officially receive some of my personal holy grails like "Wonderful Ass", "We Can Fuck", the long "Computer Blue", "Father's Song", "Electric Intercourse", "Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden", "Possessed" and "The Dance Electric"... all packed together.

I really appreciate what I'm receiving. More than regrettin' for what I'm not receiving.

Amen!! It's so frustrating reading all the hate behind this release...even before it's in our hands. "The packaging is crap." "The sound quality is horrible." When will it end. Like you, I'm just thankful to be able to listen to these songs. And on an official release no less.

It's refreshing hearing some positive in here. Seems this place has gone down hill sanity wise of late...

No, it doesn't matter. And if you are a real Prince fan, you'll already know that info changing (often and regularly) isn't anything unique to his fandom. It's almost expected. So if it bothers you that much, make the conscious decision to not purchase or listen. It's not that serious...

I find it also strange we've only had the one review so far.

I also hope the mods allow one thread per song, makes sense really.

Does anyone know if Walmart Canada will have the PR deluxe release on Friday? I asked someone in the CDs section but he told me that new CD releases come out on Tuesday, which I think is no longer the norm in US/Canada…and he wasn’t sure what new releases they would have this week. He said that somebody from outside Walmart is responsible for updating the CDs section…Prince 4EVER was available the day it was scheduled to come out, so I would assume the same for PR Deluxe.

Not even sure if the 3CD/1DVD package will be available since on their website they only seem to advertise the 2CD version.

The reason I’m asking is that I have a Walmart next to where I live and they open at 8am on a day that I’m off work, kids will be at the daycare and I will have the house to myself J

Also, does anyone know if the Syracuse DVD will also be offered as a digital download? While I will purchase the 3CD/1DVD package, I normally play stuff off my harddrive, it’s easier nowadays than connecting a dvd player to a tv…

Related but unrelated question – does anyone know what the main reason for not including Wednesday is? I mean, it was featured on an earlier configuration of the album...

Thank you

Have you ordered it on Amazon? I am pretty sure that when I bought 4ever on Amazon uk they made it available as a download as soon as the cd dispatched, two days before the official release date. Now, I don't know whether that's standard practice, but if it is, we get to hear it on Wednesday (the dispatch date according to their website).

well here is one.
PR is the best album ever, point. I'm an 80's fan, check.

This release absolutely leaves me cold. I'm a bit curious to hear Father's song, and the 2 unknown songs, but otherwise?? We have it all for 30 years already, more or less! Not even buying it.

A PR re-release without the original long versions of the PR-album songs is ridiculous. Not even 17 days long. Many songs nothing to do with PR-album even.
Why should this be a dream?

That's certainly possible - that these songs are new and exciting to me is surely something. Nonetheless, as someone who absolutely adores synths, the electronic touches on "Electric Intercourse" and "Father's Song" offer something a bit different to what we got on Purple Rain.

Why should this be a dream?

Not the dream, no. But it does have a long Computer Blue, which honestly is the only Purple Rain unreleased long version that I've ever heard that benefited from the extra (and I'm not absolutely sure it does--the album version might honestly be better, even though I like and want the extension to be canonical and not just an "unreleased" track). I mean, the extra bit on Darling Nikki? Or Take Me With U? Big deal--and, like you say--we have those, anyway. The full Purple Rain--that's a mess. Even The Beautiful Ones isn't improved by the edited portions. You've got the long released re-recording of I Would Die 4 U included in the package--I can't imagine the griping if they'd included the full take. As for the much bally-hooed but never heard 17 Days Extended--I'll believe that's incredible when I hear it (which I suspect will be never. Honestly, why, if it were a worthwhile track, wouldn't it have been on the 12-inch of When Doves Cry? I really think people are panting after the wrong song here--and I credit 17 Days with making me a longtime fan.) But, fine--we get stuff from the vault, people don't buy it because it's not what they want, or it's stuff they already have (hardly Warners fault that you've been collecting unreleased tracks).

I heard most of those extended versions on the Foefur bootleg remaster of Purple Rain some years ago, and though they are nice, I wouldn't describe them as essential.

The extra verse on Purple Rain is jarring and not in keeping with the tone of the remainder of the song anyway.

17 Days is another matter, but there's plenty in this deluxe package to keep me happy and interested.

I agree that most or all longer versions are weaker than the released ones, but that's not the point. The point is that i dont want to buy what i already got multiple times. I want to buy have i haven't got officially yet, and that is directly related to the album.
BTW did you say you have long Take me with you? I dont remember ever having that one...? (or is it that version that's just a little bit longer?)

Well, yes, we do all have unreleased tracks--but that's our own fault if we're not getting as much new to us stuff as we want because of it.

The extended Take Me With U is just the one that goes on a little bit longer after the string bit comes back.

I understand the idea that this thing should be built around tracks with a definite connection to Purple Rain--and maybe, if Warner had access to everything in the vault, that would have happened now. But they don't. And for many of the albums (if we ever get them) there's going to be a certain arbitrariness in what outtakes will be associated with what album, as Prince overlapped recording or held and revised a song for an extended period. For example, We Can Fuck doesn't really fit here, even if it's recorded the day after Erotic City, which does because it was released as a Purple Rain eral b-side, and She's Always In My Hair, which doesn't (or which would be a likely inclusion in an Around the World set). But what should they do with it--it SHOULD be released, but there were so many revisits over the years, at different high activity points in his career, in so many versions. Do you hold off and do a sequence of all the pre-release versions (or a selection of them) with a Graffiti Bridge deluxe? Or a Sign o the Times box that tries to collect that era's recordings, and slip it in with the 1986 version(s)? What do you do if a recording or song is considered for multiple albums over time?

And what about tracks that were never considered for any particular project? If something is recorded during the period when he was doing the last Purple Rain tracks but also Around the World tracks, where do you think the track should go? Or, because they weren't considered for any definite project, should such tracks not get released at all or just show up on some sort of muddled mess like the Crystal Ball release was?

My opinion is that it doesn't much matter--whether he considered a track for Purple Rain or not, if it didn't actually appear on the album, it's because it didn't belong there. Probably trying to stick more or less with roughly equivalent chronological periods is the best compilers are going to be able to do, with obvious restrictions based on what they actually have access to at the time they're making the collection. Especially since, unlike most artists, Prince usually was not going in and recording one specific album project at a time, as the home studio set ups and later Paisley allowed him to be doing so much recording work any time he wanted. The album/album outtakes model works well for many artists, but for much of Prince's work it's not going to work that well. The album it might have worked best for is probably the Purple Rain project (he'd pull stuff away from other projects into Purple Rain, but I can't think of anything that went the other way, and except for The Glamorous Life the other albums he was working on at the time were tied to some degree to Purple Rain), but Warner doesn't have access to everything, and maybe they can't wait. We don't know what rights and recordings they have right now, but they're already three years behind on this one, and who knows what would happen as far as their chances to release something if they waited.

I don't think we're going to get anything like what we really want from the vault or remaster releases. As of right now, though, I plan to support whatever does get released, hoping that more will follow (and, as things get sorted out, maybe they'll get closer to what I really desire).
