ForceofNature

The audio fidility of Father's Song is on par with Electric Intercourse as opposed to OD/RG which is really cool

Someone said Prince sounded like he's saying in the intro "Sup Branigan" but I think it's actually "Start panicking", like he's having a convo with someone. And at the end you can faintly hear someone say "okay" but I can't tell if it's Prince or not.

I love how he uses the piano as percussion during the bridge.

Could be Hey Hannigan

Hey Hannigan's a hidden track on CD3.

"Father's Song" is also available for purchase from ITunes. I LOVE it! My review: The third tidbit released from the disc of outtake goodies on the deluxe edition of Purple Rain, "Father's Song" sees Prince showcasing his soundtrack score skills. In the film, the song is played by The Kid's father alone on the piano after a fight with his wife that left her bruised and alone sitting by the curbside. The Kid later plays it by ear himself, and then interpolates it into the bridge of "Computer Blue" as a visceral electric guitar exorcism. This version is extended well beyond what was shown in the film. It starts as the familiar, plaintive piano motif for just under 2 minutes before adding increasingly processed synthesizers that add a grittiness to the track that I adore. These synths don't sound that far removed from the atmospheric soundscapes Giorgio Moroder produced during his stint as 80s soundtrack king. Some may have preferred the song to remain a pure piano piece, but the added textures are perfectly welcome in my book, as they augment the ache that echoes throughout the version shown in the film.

Moonbeam, you're so great at describing music.

"Father's Song" is not what I imagined all these years, but it is still really great. A real gem.

Just one thing... more "Vangelis" than "Moroder".

Father's Song - as with Electric Intercourse - doesn't sound like I expected it to. Prince says 1999 was influenced by Vangelis, and it really sounds like he was influenced by him here. It is really a beautiful piece of music. Exactly the sort of thing I've always hoped the vault is full of - it's atmospheric and full of emotion, Prince just being out there. The sound quality is really good too.

The atmospheric synth heavy production is similar to Electric Intercourse, and the two tracks compliment each other very well when played side by side. With these two tracks and The Dance Electric, I can sort of hear what an alternate album of music might have sounded like around this period.

And to my it sounds like he says, 'You can start panicking now' at the start.

The one album I really want to hear that not a lot of people talk about... Is the follow up album to 1999 he stated in the 1985 Rolling Stone interview, that never got released...

When does he play it by ear?

Yeah, didn't he find the sheet music the morning after he knocked over all those shelves in the movie?

Yeah, and played Purple Rain by ear after listening to W&L's tape though. AKA one of the best parts of the movie imo.

He just went straight into Computer Blue after the fathers Song segment

You're right! Can't believe I misremembered it like that.

I'm not familiar with Vangelis outside of the song "Chariots of Fire". What would you recommend?

You can also purchase it through ITunes if you are prepared to be foolish like me and buy the song and then buy the physical copy as well.

Not very well versed in his work either but the Blade Runner soundtrack is a classic and usually the first thing people recommend of his.

I'm positive it's "Start panicking".

Regardless - "Father's Song" is glorious. Definite Vangelis / Tangerine Dream vibes.

Father's Song is great! It doesn't change much throughout, but it still builds and builds. It really reminds me of 12 Keys in that manner.
