.
There really needs to be a new accounting.
The 100+ million figure has been used for 20 years.
Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

All his albums should have new accounting for... Especially the surge in sales since his death... Purple Rain hasn't been receritified since 1996 which was 13 MILLION in the U.S. I'm sure in 20 years Purple Rain has sold millions more...

Batman is the most conflicted number for sales with various sources saying it has sold 4 Million, 6 Million and 11 Million world wide...

Diamonds & Pearls should have hit the 7 Million mark by now...

The Very Best of Prince sold over 1.1 million in one year since his death, and is well over 4 million total world wide to date...

1999 is another album that hasn't had any certification since the 80's which currently stands at 6 million but I'm sure it's way past that mark right now...

MJ's albums are continueously recertified, yet Prince's biggest sellers haven't been recertified even though they have sold millions more in the last 20 years...

... And to be honest, even though Prince's sales figures were up and down, world wide he always hit the PLATINUM mark... Every album from PRINCE - THE HITS/THE B-SIDES all sold over a million world wide.

I even wouldn't be surprised if he should be in the 150 million + sales category, I just don't think there is good accounting for his albums especially since a lot of his non WBR catalouge is out of print and don't count as purchased sales anymore... MUSICOLOGY was a huge seller, over 3 million worldwide yet it's out of print so no more sales count for that album, as well as a handfull of others...

Just with only these albums combined: 1999, PURPLE RAIN, ATWIAD, PARADE, SOTT, BATMAN, DIAMONDS & PEARLS, MUSICOLOGY he has sold over 55 MILLION.

Add a few more PLATINUM albums such as:

PRINCE - 1 M

DIRTY MIND - 1M

CONTROVERSY - 1M

GRAFFITI BRIDGE -2M

LOVESEXY - 2M

THE HITS 1,2/B-SIDES - 3M

LOVE SYMBOL - 2M

TVBOP - 3M

and that's another 15 Million...

....

Add the GOLD albums such as:

COME

TGE

EMANCIPATION

RAVE

LOTSUFLOWER

ULTIMATE PRINCE

3121

and that's another 4.5 Million...

.....

Add the non certified albums such as:

FOR YOU - 400,000 (U.S. ONLY)

THE BLACK ALBUM - 400,000 (U.S. ONLY)

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL MAXI - 750,000 (U.S. ONLY)

CHAOS & DISORDER - 350,000 (U.S. ONLY)

CRYSTALL BALL - 100,000 (U.S. ONLY)

NEW POWER SOUL - 250,000 (U.S. ONLY)

THE VAULT: OF4S - 300,000 (U.S. ONLY)

THE RAINBOW CHILDREN - 560,000 (world wide)

PLANET EARTH - 250,000 (U.S. ONLY)

PLECTRUMELECTRUM - 45,000 (U.S. ONLY)

AOA - 90,000 (U.S. ONLY)

PHASE 1 - 50,000 (U.S. ONLY)

PHASE 2 - 80,000 (U.S. ONLY)

4EVER - 100,000 (U.S.) 100,000 (U.K.)

and that's another 3.8 Million on mostly U.S. sales only...

... and these numbers are some albums that have sold millions and millions more but have't been receritified in maybe 10-25 years....

What is the process for recertification? Does someone have to pay for the process? If so, WB were not inclined to do so while he was around and causing them problems. I bet if they suddenly reacquired rights from the estate they would be motivated to do so immediately.

Yes RIAA has to be paid to do a new accounting and for any new certifications and new plaques.

Well, there you go. Until someone stands to profit from the enhanced status, recertification won't happen.

Guess Prince never got to that "audit" of Purple Rain he said he wanted, in the Tavis Smiley interview in 2009...

But's it's for sure that Purple Rain is way passed the 13x million mark it's been stuck at since 1996.

Surely it must be at 16x million plus and could go even higher with the upcoming release of Purple Rain Deluxe.

If they recertified Purple Rain and reached 20 million or more sales the U.S. it would be in the TOP 10 biggest selling albums in the U.S.A.

I bet you with all the recent sales since his death and the last 20 years of non certified sales, with digital, upcoming PR Deluxe, the reissue of PR on vinyl in 20011... I'm willing to bet Purple Rain's total sales in the USA alone since it's 13x Platinum certification in 1996 could be in the 17 million - 20 million range.

According to BILLBOARD Purple Rain sold 487,000 copies in 2016 in the U.S. one year since his death.

According to the WORLD CHARTS at Media Traffic, Purple Rain sold 675,000 copies world wide not including U.S. sales...
