It seems like as much a you love Prince and as much as he stood for artists' rights you'd at least try and support a streaming service that tries to do the same rather than supporting greed hounds like Spotify and Apple Music who not only don't care about the artists', but doesn't even pay them their fair share.

Why your band name should be protected by a trademark

1. Avoid duplicate band names

You don’t want to tour and record for years under one band name, only to find out that there’s another band working under the same name in another part of the country (or world).

In that event, one of you is either going to have to change your name entirely or tack on a little extra identifier, “Charlatans UK,” “The All New…”

That’d suck because you’ll have to exert a lot of extra effort to regain the recognition you once had with the old band name. Your band name is your brand name — and if you have to change it, it’s going to cost you money too: repressing discs or vinyl with the new band name, distribution fees associated with replacing your music in stores, etc.

2. Protect your domain name and social profiles

Whichever band wins the trademark dispute is going to have the right to claim or shut down the other band’s web address and social media URLs, handles, etc. You’ve worked too hard building your online presence to have some jokers five states over kill your music career momentum just because they filed the paperwork first.

How to see if someone else is already using the band name you’d like to trademark

Well, Google is always a great place to start. Do any other band names come up in a search? If not, phew! But it doesn’t mean you’re free and clear yet.

It'a always hilarious when some assclown totally misses the point. Number one, the rapper didn't put his own song on the service, Tidal did. Which is why they took it down. It has fuck all to do with "technological ignorance". As you pointed out, it is COMMON SENSE business practice.

FYI to assclown in question.....old people still BUY music, they don't rent it. If you're going to engage in age discrimination, at least get your information right.

--Well the old people comment was uncalled for but this person is correct. Tidal does give the artist a better royalty rate and you do have the option of purchasing the music instead of streaming. I think a lot of people take their hatred of Jay-Z to far as it is not Tidal's job to make sure idiot rappers have the right to use a name for themselves or their groups. Tidal is not going to screen all of the music that is submitted to their site mainly because many people are putting music independent of lables so this type of stuff can occur. Prince wanted to be affiliated with this company and Tidal has a court date pending and notice that the injunction to remove the WB stuff from six months ago resulted in nothing being removed from the site. Oh and the sound is great.

That still was not the point because no one was disputing Tidal's sound quality or royalty rates in the first place.

It most certainly is the job of the streaming service to make sure they do not mis-categorize artists with similar names. If that were not the case they would not have corrected their error.

They corrected the error because they were contacted if they had not been contacted they would not have corrected anything. I do not use any streaming service, period. I don't get why people on this site make blanket assumptions of things that were never said. This is the reason a decent disussion can never happen on the org.

Anon's point was irrelevant because the discussion was never about which streaming service pays better. It is not necessary to manufacture a debate where none exists just to have an excuse to gripe about "old people", which is what he did.

Furthermore it's uncalled for to anybody to judge someone else's "love of Prince" by implying that it's necessary to support everything that he supported.

I don't support the Jehovah Witness faith either, does that give you the right to judge how much I love Prince???
