Cloreen Bacon Skin

Looking for something to crank up loud to celebrate June 7 and realized I hadn't played this one in a couple years. I've been remiss...

This is a nastay fonk jam!! Sure, it's not a great "song", if you're hung up on lyrics and melody you might want to give it a pass. But Prince (Jamie Starr) & Morris (Alfred?!?) are laying down the funk down so thick you can smell it.

At 15:37 it might be too long and boring for some of ya, but I'm pissed when it fades out. Gonna replay now. Think a half hour of this nasty groove will upset my neighbors? lol headbang

Dude! Finally some thread. celebrating Cloreen! This was the prototype (forget you Andre 3 stacks)! Irresistible Butch and others. Just him and Morris getting down. I think that's where that one picture it comes from with prints dressed as that temp with Maurice at the studio boards. It comes from the session probably. And I read something about a rumor that prince was playing the bass with gloves on if that means anything

I love that picture!! Made me think that Prince actually became this Jamie Starr character he created.

Heard about the gloves thing too. Think I heard D'Angelo copped that to get the bass sound for a track on Black Messiah. All I know is it's FONKY. Got my funk face on... biggrin

I'm not too fond of its inclusion on CB.

Like it or not it is just an improvisation, later used as the foundation of "Tricky".
If the will was to give us a long jam, "U Gotta Shake Something" was a real better choice.

And on a side note, when you realise that P cutted away more than 2 minutes of the stunning perfection of "Crucial", the inclusion of 15 minutes of Cloreen sounds frustrating.

Yeah, I called him Jaimie Starr when that pic came out too. People dont realize the significance of that pic. And this song. The skeleton for many of his seminal works in that era. The vibe alone. The sickness of it (sick meaning good, crazy, not negative of course). 15 minutes of pure drums and bass bliss. And the Jaimie Starr voice where Morris copped from. They said it was a throwaway back then but folks just didnt/dont recognize.

I can dig it, you have some valid points.

I'm not looking at it through the lense of CB as a whole, I'm taking it for what it is, out of context.

Viewed as a set, Crystal Ball will always be judged as much by what it should have been as for the quality of some of the stunning tracks that were included. If you focus on what could've been, Prince's choices leave a lot to be desired, for sure.

As for the track itself, of course it's an improvisation, but I wouldn't use the word "just". This is Prince we're talking about here and in this instance he and Morris are TIGHT! This is some fire, the kind of thing that makes me want to not only know Prince's discography, but dig deeper into the sessions, performances and even rehearsals, diggin' for magic moments just like this one.

As it is, I already had U Gotta Shake Something when CB came out, I didn't already have Cloreen Bacon Skin, so, it's one choice Prince made that I'm beyond happy about.

No offense to anyone now or in the future, but can this be just about Cloreen?

He mentions Alfred! lol

I remember the rumors about mythical Alfred. And who knew, turns out that...

I know, right?!

The improvisation makes the funk even better. This is some "blueprint" funk right here. biggrin

From PrinceVault.com:

"Initial tracking took place on 27 March 1983 (the day after Jungle Love, and the same day as My Summertime Thang, during a two-day break from the 1999 Tour), at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA.

http://www.princevault.co...Bacon_Skin

This page also mentions some live performances, guess I'm going to have to dive into my hard drive looking for some of those. If anybody wants to make it easy on me, dates and/or bootleg titles might make that job easier. wink lol

Cloreen is the bomb, especially since musically and lyrically it was mostly improvised.

Can't say for sure, but when I look at it I see early 80s.

So that's Cloreen, Tricky, Irresistible Bitch, Tambourine, what other song uses that drum and bass pattern?

I think one of the versions of Soul Psychodelicide might go into it a bit?

That pic screams early 80's, probably 1999 era. I'm checking out the coifs and the overall vibe of the pic. "1999" and "What Time Is It?" all over it!

I have a set of fan-made albums called "Purple Mixes," which were like a reimagining of certain time periods with mixes of released and unreleased tracks that fit together thematically and chronologically. One is named "Purple Music" and has a version of Cloreen Bacon Skin is edited down to 7:16 and has parts of Tricky throughout. I like it…except it's shorter than the released CBS alone.
