Certainly the closest, most constant relationship of his life....

How so there is a period of time when this dude was not even around and he did not show up until PR and then did not reappear until D&P. You are putting a lable on him.

I actually think it may have been Andy Allo.

For the record....... at Prince's Piano & Microphone Show in Toronto he said: heart "I Love U Mary." I wondered if he was speaking about Mary J Blige. Her song "I Love You" made me think of Prince the first time I heard it. Or was there another Mary? The odd thing to me was that when a friend sent a link of that show to me awhile ago, I mentioned hearing this in a private message to a few friends. When I went back to watch it aqain, those words had been deleted out of the video................. Strange, I wonder why.

You think he was telling Mary J. Blige he loved? Lord

I'd prefer to think he was talking about Mary Sharon. He wanted to take her away from here...forever!

time flies.

No, I'm wondering which Mary he was singing that too. And the first Mary that I thougt of was Mary J Blige not for any reason other than her name is Mary. And they always seemed to have a close relationship & love for one another. IDK, I keep forgetting that if I post anything here someone usually has a problem with it, without really understanding where I'm coming from or that it's just a guess. I thought this was a public forum for Prince fans to discuss ideas. Why so serious, can't I post a suggestion without an automatic repremand? Obviously not.

No worries, for me it's all about Prince and the love he gave to so many and all those magnificent masterpieces he created. Forgive me for thinking I should be able to make a guess about which Mary he said he loved just before he passed. Strange days.

Prince is reported to have said (paraphrasing here) 'you'll learn more about me from my music than anything I'll say'...so let's believe him. IMO, the glory and depth of his love songs to Mayte (especially those on Emancipation) leave every other love song he wrote after they split in the dust. After Mayte, he was just going through the motions. His world-view of never-looking-back, leaving everythig to God, pushing forward at all costs, denying and distancing himself from every uncomfortable little truth kept him IMO from processing and healing from their shared tragedy and and moving foward together. In essence, he got stuck in the nadir of his life, it showed in his music and I believe his drug use started around that time. Flame away, Org., I've lived a long time and this is what my gut, heart and stereo tell me.

throughout his long career, when P was done with someone, it was permanent....the fact that Kirk "left", and "came back", and stayed till the VERY end, only certifies the undying love/trust that P had for him...and what "lable" are u referring to?

Yup...point of clarification re my post this a.m., I believe Mayte was the truest, deepest heterosexual love of P's life...and she, like all the other women, only lasted a few years in the flesh. Fire away, Org.

Why would anyone do that? He has other guitars and breaks his own. Now, if they stole one of his songs--that would be different.

Despite the fact that he got remarried and appears to only have spoken to Mayte once in 20 years while communicating and staying friends with mere jumpoffs for years.

You can say the same thing about Sheila E but no one on this board believes anything she has to say about their relationship at all.

fronted different incarnations of his own band, which all included men, who still to this day swear by his coolness, brotherhood, generosity, intelligence, and sense of humor

so how is it that Prince didnt get along well with men?

I never said Sheila E held a role like "Paisly Park Manager/Superintendent" not that much was going on when Kirk took over.

Sheila E was a drummer, band director, co-writer, and talent scout. To me those are a lot of roles and she was responsible for bringing in the Oakland/SF bay area people to his band.

The average person outside of the Prince community would not know Kirk if they saw him walking down the street.

  1. He was a child when he went to live with Andre’s family not Andre. In fact he moved to the basement to get away from Andre’s sloppy behavior and he had and Andrea had problems by Dre’s own admission.
  2. Him and Morris had differences. They got into a physical fight on the set of Purple Rain.
  3. He always had women around in his bands as musicians or dancers. Even Dez said he calmed down when women were around. Just think about the disastrous times he had with the The Time to point of having to back out of a room rather then turn his back on these guys.
  4. Plenty of stories of him not getting along as well with men and he did women. Does not mean he was ready to knock dudes out or was giving them a hard time.

just becuase Kirk Johnson didnt meet your, or the "average person's, criteria for celbrity status, doesnt disprove the trust and loyalty Prince had for him...

Actually, I wrote that, Laura, pay attention. And as food for thought let me paint you an imperfect picture of a time when it wasn't safe, cool, accepted or considered even remotely 'normal' for a man to be attracted to other men. Once upon a time those men frequently, almost reflexively, surrounded thmselves with women to deflect 'talk' and held back from any closeness to men to perhaps avoid temptation and help control their attractions/urges. This closeted dance was greatly intensified in communities of color...and when you stir in adherence to the more extreme strains of conservative Christianity you have a toxic brew of denial, isolation and pain.

However, I agree with OJOrion's observations re P and men and would add that fame, money (and its attendant control over others) and already being 'out there' with his clothing, makeup and overall presentation gave Prince more latitude than others in the black/religious comunity and an almost perfect protective coloration re the yearnings of his heart. A 30 plus year relationship/association is no small thing. Have some compassion...and respect.
