Prince never smoked?

Not even a cigarette?

I read somewhere that he didn't like the smell when his bandmates used to light cigarettes around him.

What's the tea?

Prince did smoke. Two packs a day. Usually Kool Milds but Benson & Hedges Mentol 100s in a pinch.

Wendy: But when I joined the band I smoked cigarettes and he was like "Uh-uh, not having it, you have to stop" and I did. And when we were rehearsing for the Purple Rain tour -- I think it was my guitar tech was a cigarette smoker, and even though he didn’t smoke in the arena, he went to test Prince’s mic and just said "Check one-two" into it -- and [later] Prince could smell the cigarette on his microphone. That guy was fired immediately.

The lyrics to Prince’s mid 80s psychedelic ode ‘Paisley Park’ imagine a utopia where there are no rules but in the studio complex and sound stage of the same name there were actually quite a lot. Upon arrival we had to routinely pass through metal detectors, and it was strictly no phones, no smoking and no alcohol – water was all that was consumed.

Incorrect. He was clearly a Virginia Slims kinda guy. You've come a long way, baby.

Ya know, this is kinda interesting in a random way. Like in 17 Days the "2 cigarettes" line is mega powerful in the "only someone who used it would know" kinda way... Also is it two for what used to be two people to share together or two left and no chance of any more (because he don't smoke but she did)? Then there is the "Sherm Stick" mix of Let It Go that uses samples from TBODP and sounds a little Cypress Hill/Muggs-ish in style. He has a song about Incense & Candles but I don't know many non smokers that have incense goin' while getting it on cough cough cough. Last one might be a stretch but I remember looking at that song title suspect when it first came out.
.
Isn't there a funky tune where he encourages us to roll him up and take a puff or something silly like that. And the line about the cousin trying reefer in SOTT. Tbh those had led me think he didn't and would never. People probably safely assume he was not a heavy drinker, especially in the light of his family history and alcohol, so there are no official remixes with liquor titles or love songs where a drink is sought after as a refuge from a stormy relationship. Right? I'm sure it wasn't totally intentional but there definitely are for smoking though. But then there is the whole song Clouds. But he was getting high. Awkward.
.
My guess, as a rando who literally knows almost nothing except for what makes me wanna dance, is he prob tried it on several occasions just because but never decided to do it all the time or ever publicly, most notably the celebrated cliche post-coital tobacco smoking and also likely to see if weed did indeed encourage creativity. Or maybe he did have that restraint we all thought he did until the final years. Or was really good at hiding stuff. It's ironic and bittersweet almost as people always rag on smokers about how they're gonna die early and obviously mannnnny other things can happen besides smoking that can lead to ones quick and early demise.
.
In my mind he was and always will be a pretty eternally single fella with a heart of gold eating only vegetables while drinking water and hating on heathens even though he knew that people been smoking something since they could crawl outta the ooze. It's funny as I never imagined W. Houston would smoke and she sure did and in the end it sure did show. I'm pretty sure Etta James smoked and could still run the stage though. Once I met a very notable singer and was taken aback when she asked me for a cigarette but I'm not naming names lol.

Isn't Lisa smoking a lot through the June 7th 1984 rehearsal video? Also in Purple Rain and the Automatic video.

Us=meaning the band/music unless cigs are now people and he did like to drink wine many people have talked about and maybe he slacked off later but he apparently really liked his port.

Yes, Lisa is definitely smoking in the automatic video. However, it seems she's the only one allowed to smoke around him.

He may have been a smoker at one point. Just because somebody hates the stench of cigarettes doesn't mean they've never smoked. As a former smoker myself I hate the smell of smoke and my nose is quite a bit more sensative to it. Did P ever smoke? Maybe, maybe he smoked as a youngster. Or maybe he never has, but it's not out of the ordinary for somebody to have never smoked a cigarette. (or anything for that matter)

On AOA , I can't remember the song, I think maybe it's "Time," there's background sound of someone lighting (what sounds like a joint from the way it burns) and taking a drag, or a puff, whatever the kids are saying these days...

I suppose it's possible though Wendy seems to indicate it was a no-no, except for Lisa who was able to get away with it. It certainly wasn't allowed at Paisley Park. I always assumed he didn't just because there aren't photographs of him smoking and his voice was amazing until the very end. The only mention of it from Prince himself that I can find is a 2012 interview with a Chicago newspaper where he said no one in the band smokes.

Wendy said that Prince was always enamored with Lisa from the very beginning because she could play the piano/organ better than him, so he let her do whatever she wanted.

.

I've always found that psychology in the workplace.

.

Those who have valuable skills can bend the rules and get away with all sorts of things.

.

Prince had always kept close to him people who could do things he couldn't. Take for example the songwriters he never credited.

.

Sadly in life people are never valued equally.

That would be cool, but I think it's a candle being lit with a match.

I'm saying it would be cool cuz I sure would have preferred Prince easing his physical/psychological pains with reefers instead of what happened. Not advocating for drugs, but as far as medication goes, it's obviously better to be stoned than on opioids.

I never thought of it being a candle! But you may be right. When my daughter and I first listened to the song we both looked at one another and said, "Prince is smoking pot?!" eek

*sigh*....I still miss these on a regular basis. Smoked for 38 years but quit and will surpass three years on September 7 (never, ever got past a year prior)! Was a serial quitter and could always find a (good enough) reason to go back. Don't think I will ever not get a craving for one every so often. I occasionally get a whiff of a cigarette and they are rather stinky, so that helps. Plus the cost of a pack these days is also a good deterrent. Honestly, it's just better to never start.

Apologies as I don't mean to make it all about me! Had to get that out of my system. Or go buy a pack. Ah well, back to Prince.....

After Prince passed I remember Sean Lennon tweeting that Prince got him to stop smoking.

@seanonolennon
Prince also told me all artists should self publish w no label, and that I should stop smoking. I took his advise in both cases.
