“Parade” was Prince’s 1986 follow-up to “Around the World in a Day” and the soundtrack to his second film “Under the Cherry Moon”. The album revealed a complex new jazz influenced sound, featuring lush orchestral arrangements (from Clare Fischer) and a very European flavour.

“Parade” featured the number one single, "Kiss" – along with key tracks; “Girls and Boys”, “Anotherlover”, and “Sometimes it Snows in April”. It was also the final album that Prince released with the Revolution.

In this edition of “25” we hear from Prince keyboard player Matt Fink (aka “Doctor Fink”), Brent Fischer son of arranger Clare Fischer, S-Endz (from “Swami”), UK broadcaster Bobby Friction, Brett Anderson (from Suede), Doctor Simon Barber from Birmingham City University… and massive Prince fan Bill Oddie.

Although Venus De Milo had existed for a few years as an untitled piano instrumental, initial tracking in the studio only took place in mid-July, 1985 at the Washington Avenue Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA (during the same set of sessions as Neon Telephone, Do U Lie? and Alexa De Paris). Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song at some point in mid-late 1985 at Monterey Sound Studios, Glendale, CA, USA. -PrinceVault

Venus de Milo

Aphrodite of Milos

Ἀφροδίτη τῆς Μήλου

Aphroditē tēs Mēlou

R-188822-1118217943.jpg

An ancient Greek statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Created at some time between 130 and 100 BC, it is believed to depict Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) the Greek goddess of love and beauty. It is a marble sculpture, slightly larger than life size at 203 cm (6 ft 8 in) high. Its arms and original plinth have been lost. From an inscription that was on its plinth, it is thought to be the work of Alexandros of Antioch; it was earlier mistakenly attributed to the master sculptor Praxiteles. It is currently on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Moreover, the sensuous juxtaposition of flesh with the texture of drapery, which seems about to slip off the figure, adds an insistent note of erotic tension that is thoroughly Hellenistic in concept and intent.

The Aphrodite of Milos was discovered by a peasant named Yorgos Kentrotas on April 8, 1820, inside a buried niche within the ancient city ruins of Milos, the current village of Tripiti, on the Aegean island of Milos (also Melos, or Milo). The statue was found in two main pieces (the upper torso and the lower draped legs) along with several herms (pillars topped with heads), fragments of the upper left arm and left hand holding an apple, and an inscribed plinth. Olivier Voutier, a French naval officer, was exploring the island. With the help of the young farmer, Voutier began to dig around what were clearly ancient ruins. Within a few hours Voutier had uncovered Venus de Milo.

About ten days later, another French naval officer, Jules Dumont d'Urville, recognized its significance and arranged for a purchase by the French ambassador to Turkey, Charles-François de Riffardeau, marquis, later duc de Rivière.

In the year 1985 Prince Rogers Nelson of Minneapolis Minn USA created an instrumental piece called Venus de Milo. It was song number 7 side 1 on the Prince the Revolution album Parade and in the movie Under the Cherry Moon scene 28. features the piece Venus De Milo (Christopher & Mary kissing in the Phone booth) & scene 38. Once upon a time in a land called Fantasy

17 mountains stood so high

The sea surrounded them and 2gether they would be

The only thing that ever made U cry

U said the devil told U that another mountain would appear

Every time somebody broke your heart

He said the sea would one day overflow with all your tears

And love will always leave U lonely

CHORUS:

But I say it's only mountains and the sea

Love will conquer if U just believe (Oh yeah!)

It's only mountains and the sea

There's nothing greater (oh), U and me

Once upon a time in a haystack of despair

Happiness is sometime hard 2 find there

Africa divided, hijack in the air

It's enough 2 make U wanna lose your mind

CHORUS

Guitars and drums on the 1, huh

(Bobby on the drum-ah)

Yeah!

It's only mountains (oh yeah) and the sea

(And the girls say)

There's nothing greater (oh), U and me

(Starvation)

Ow!

Mountains , uh

MOUNTAINS

Initial tracking taking place on 30 November, 1985 (on the same day as An Honest Man), almost seven months after a first sequence of the Parade album was compiled. Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman composed the music, and brought it to Prince. He composed the lyrics, but claimed sole credit for the song upon its release. Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song at some point in mid-late 1985 at Monterey Sound Studios, Glendale, CA, USA, but Princepreferred the track without orchestration, and chose to use the track without orchestration for the final release. -PrinceVault

UNRELEASED

Mountains1-1.jpg

Others Here With Us
When I'm alone, my mind takes a drive
Through chocolate religion and spirits alive
All I was brought up in this world 2 know
Is lost when a demon swallows them whole

CHORUS:
There's others here with us
There's others here with us, I know

It's strange how your mind works when Love is in power
One learns 2 care and appreciate a flower
What makes others want 2 change your mind?
All the things I've seen, life is so sublime

CHORUS

7-month-old baby died in her sleep
The parents went crazy and cried 4 a week
They swore they heard her laugh in the crib by the wall
They're convinced she's with us if she's anything at all

There's others here with us
There's others here with us, I know (I know)

Bobby had an uncle who took a string
And wrapped his neck around it, a pitiful thing
If only we can turn back the hands of time
Except there's others here with us, life is sublime

There's others here with us
There's others here with us, I know (I know)

All the things I've seen

CHORUS

Others Here With Us
Prince's experimental frame of mind is evident on this track, a dark, strange number with a stark instrumentation made up of tribal-like drumming and various sound effects, such as someone weeping. Prince's vocals are harsh and confused, matching the nightmarish lyrics mentioning death and suicide. Recorded during the Parade sessions, it confirms Prince's belief the spirit lives on after death.
