This is truly one of the best tributes to Prince, maybe the best. This was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Prince admired Larry Graham as a musician and songwriter, later on inviting Larry and his family to move to Chanhassen and teach him the bible. Even, Prince mentioned how Larry's family was closer to him than his own. Knowning how much Prince did for Larry on many fronts and how Larry counseled him through serious trying times in his life before he converted Prince to the Jehovah Witnesses. The block chords playing over Larry's words, is tear inducing. I can only imagine how Larry feels. I would see a Larry Graham show before I would pay to see The Revolution and NPG with Prince knock-offs fronting the band for lead vocals.

I'm always a bit suspicios about musicians who wear a watch on stage. I'm like, "you need to catch the bus, bro – or what?"

That was great.
Here's an older song of Larrys too, that I love his bass playing & singing on, for anyone who's interested. SO funky.

This was an extremely heartfelt and moving tribute. He and Prince were a mutual admiration society and I believe they both truly loved each other. Thanks for sharing, Latin.

i expect this thread to rapidly desend into an LG bashing session. Truly hope that reports of him encouraging P to move from meds for pain to prayer instead are not true! I firmly believe that LG did save P at a very bad point in his life, whether he added value to or took away from his life longer term is open to debate but I think he did care for him & P saw him as a father figure.

Here's a fairly brief and wonderful article about Prince I hadn't seen before. LG is interviewed here:

Prince, I miss you so much. πŸ’œπŸ™β€οΈ

I've not seen one thing reporting LG told Prince to do this. There was the blind gossiip item which said the person they were talking about swapped pain meds for prayer, but it didn't name the person and certinaly didn't mention any friends. Also LG is a Jehovah's Witness and there's nothing in their doctrine to suggest people should swap medication for prayer.

RIP sad

Really liked Larry's tribute here and always disliked the hate he gets around these parts. Also really liked the rendition of Purple Rain.

While I don't pers peoplonally like him, I'm sure he genuinely misses Prince. Even dudes I don't like get to grieve for a friend.

From the article in post #12 here:

"Later, Prince asked Graham if he would move to Minnesota to continue teaching him about God and his faith. He accepted, and Graham and his family relocated from Jamaica, where they had been teaching Bible school."

Prince wasn't helpless. He was smart and a seeker and made his own decisions.
I don't know if later when Prince wanted to open up to other spiritual paths, if their opinions differed, that happens sometimes. (I have no basis for suggesting this happened between them; this is just my own experience).

Or maybe Prince didn't need such close mentorship after a while.

Or maybe they stayed real close and Larry just hasn't mentioned that.

One thing comes to mind though: in 2004, P told us at his RnR HOF Induction that we all need spiritual mentorship in these times, and that a spiritual mentor should care about you soul as much as they do their own. This tells me he had that. At least that's how I heard it.

After reading Mayte's book I started to separate my GCS records from my Prince records on the shelf.

That's normal behaviour right?

That thick of a cookie brush always causes me concern.

Kidding aside, obviously Prince and Larry connected and were close, and there's a genuine adoration in Larry's words. It's sad for all of us, Larry included.

Cookie brush... falloff More tactful than what I call it.

And yeah, seriously, Prince and Larry were close, from what I can tell, and that's great for Prince. And Larry, for whatever that's worth.
