It seems Prince thought differently

Check out what Prince Says through Mayte at 9 Minutes

https://www.youtube.com/w...VfENoqS4pY

I watched, and it says that artists can sell music directly to the consumer, or give it away IF THEY WANT.

Prince didn't give music away for free. Sometimes it seemed that way to us (Musicology, PE, 20Ten), but he was paid in advance or it was included in the ticket/membership price. If you have an example of when he did, I'd love to hear it.

I agree with your overall point, but he did sometimes put songs up for free download.

PFunk

Cybersingle

The Work Pt. 1 (released on Napster - I presume they didn't pay him)

Possibly U Make My Sun Shine / When Will We B Paid?

I'm sure there are more.

I swear Prince tweeted or re-tweeted someone re: P2P but he must have deleted. It was basically Prince supporting P2P with people charging a fair price. The only thing I can find on Twitter is the tweet below:

I'll concede that he had occasional free tracks available for download (hell, he threw in a cassette copy of The War when I ordered Crystal Ball through 1-800-New-Funk).

I don't see this as supporting P2P at all.

So...

COuld we deduce that when Prince wasnt in need of Money , he gave his music away ??

I wouldn't say that -- I would say that Prince used free downloads for promotion, and at certain times it just came out of his own pocket.

The Napster download of The Work, Pt. 1 was promotion for The Rainbow Children
Cybersingle was promotion for the NPG Music Club
What If was promotion/reward for Ticketmaster buyers

F.U.N.K. was a response to the PFU/lawsuit debacle

Etc.

Well Prince did tweet about HNR Phase 2 being locally pressed and distributed so maybe that's what he meant by P2P - cutting out the middle man. What are the benefits of record companies these days?

Was Prince giving us a plan to deal with his vault? I am a firm believer that he left his catalog in a tangled web on purpose to make it difficult for others to profit. I believe his will was to leave his vault to his fans and he knew the tangled web would result in his fans getting his music easier. Most of us us got Montreux 2013 and the Deliverance EP for free from other fans. The Estate has had over a year and even PR Deluxe wont surpass either of those releases in my mind. I think fans need to get more active and we need to do this peer 2 peer thing. I remember him saying in tweets that the price didnt matter. Didnt make sense at the time. Makes sense now.

I can see this angle....He has also been quoted as saying that

one day he would GIVE all his music away....

I have no guilt or shame in burning discs and sharing his work now..

WHen he was here, I would feel a teeny bit guilty about the Boots...

But I couldnt resist them...

but not now..no guilt

I share everything I can..

I want as many people as possible to benefit from the JOY his music brings

And he quoted that "somebody will, but I won't".release the vault songs when asked about the vault in an interview.
