The Glamorous Life Appreciation

Prince was on fire with his song writing during
this 83/4 time period.
From his B-sides to his associated artists, Prince
was in a zone.
He wrote "When Doves Cry" on March 1 1984.
TGL was also written in that same month.
This song musically & lyrically just a classic songz
Another song he instantly connected with on
every level

Would have been a great track on the Apollonia 6 album. Nex to Sex Shooter or even a replacement of it. Could also replace Happy Birthday Mr Christian. Would have made that album quite a bit better!

Totally agree. You have the overwhelming amount of mainline Prince sound going on at that time (the purple MPLS / Revolution sound), and then out of nowhere comes this.

.

The sax player, Larry Williams, absolutely played his ass right off on this track. His playing really adds a new dimension in energy and chromatic style that distinguishes this jam from others.

.

In addition the rhythm groove combined with the synth notes is just perfect in it's funky style.

.

I just recently acquired / heard an earlier version with Prince vocals .. apparently the initial tracking. It has an amazing raw energy-- and what stands out most to me is again Larry Williams -- the most recognizable and perfect solo he plays at the end of the track is right there on the initial tracking. Perfection.

it really is perfect.... the plot, the lyrics, the beat, the chorus.. everything is so tight...

oh and im convinced that Dont Cha by Pussycat Dolls copies it...

I hear the synth line to Glamorous Life everytime I hear the words "Dont Cha Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot Like Me'....

maybe just me..

great album, sheilas next couple albums were ignored though. I loved just loved the album after romance 1600, i had it in my car for two months and sheila developed as a singer incredibly. too bad she didn't get the push she needed.

yeah Glamorous Life was perfect beginning 2 end. I wish we had a few more B sides outside of 2 Sexy.

Romance 1600 the look was on point, the performances on point, but the music was lacking.

I loved romance 1600, also loved how you could wonder if it was her pubic hair on the cover, they really snuck that one by whoever is responsible for those things.

her third album is really damned good, pride and passion most of the album really. Prince had lost the public's ear by that point though. He had enough trouble having hits with his own brilliant material but i think sheila's third album might have been her best but minneapolis was not the cutting edge by that point. I mean, people were still imitating prince, all the time but he was moving too fast and releasing too much for the public to take in.

The song is great, but the perfect Prince and Sheila collaboration is undoubtedly Love Bizarre. They co-wrote the song, and their chemistry was just magical. One of my all-time favorite songs. When Sheila suddenly showed up during the W2A concert I attended, and they sang that song, I totally lost it!

apart from the fact that it's not a collaboration between Prince and Sheila. The song was written about Apollonia (who drove a big brown Mercedes sedan) and meant for the Apollonia 6 album. After Apollonia made it clear she would be gone after the Purple Rain project, Prince lost interest in the album and looked for a replacement. The Glamorous Life is basically the Escovedo 6 album, but with a slight change in the concept.

.

A Love Bizarre is a proper collaboration. Personally, I am somewhat sad that Sheila joined Prince as drummer, as on her third album she was starting to develop her own voice, helped by Prince. (as opposed to having collections of disparate songs, that sometimes worked, sometimes not)

Yeah no need to split rabbits here, it was most definitely a collaboration. They each co-produced it. Even if she didn't co-produce or play percussion, she sang the damn song and that itself makes it a collaboration.

Definition of collaboration, working with someone to produce or create something. Just by doing the vocals, she helped create the recorded version of the song.

Yeah, I was aware this was originally intended for Apollonia 6 - but I think it was a very happy accident that it ended up being finished/released by Sheila instead. Her percussion & voice suit it so well. That latin sounds really brought Prince & his music to a new audience.

.

Also have to agree that A Love Bizarre is also a monster track. Check the live version from Celebration 2002. Altered chords in the verses to give a jazz feel and a fantastic horn section.

I thought it was intended for Vanity 6 and like most of the Apollonia 6stuff was given to them due to change of the lead-

No matter still another iconic pop song. Prince was the Master.

Huh? If you're talking about her crotch area, I can clearly see she's wearing a black or very dark tiny-bikini-size bottom.

Sheila was always a lot more modest with her body than Vanity and Apollonia, she wanted to be known more for her talent as a musician. And nothing against the other two gals, but Sheila was the only talented musician of the three.

Dance Electric YES

But the Glamorous Life was perfect with Sheila E and Prince as is. It is still 'purple music' and not unreleted to Prince.

Just watch the video again. Perfect protege song.

Sheila was is a real musician and well this was just her playing Vanity. Everyone knows Prince wrote the song for Vanity 6.

Sheila did not need to be half naked but Prince was not going to waste it on Apolonnia. I really would have loved to see Vanity do the song. She had all the attitude for it. I never bought Sheila as a sex vixen.

Sheila is still performing showing what a talent she is with her clothes on.

I like how the first to albums are treated like movies... Sheila E in The Glamorous Life and Sheila E in Romance 1600 (even the liner notes in Romance were more like a movie)
