To this day I am still surprised he agreed to do this performance with his stance on lip syncing.

He talked about that in an interview. I forget the reason why (maybe everyone did like they had to on American Bandstand?), but he said he hated doing it. Partly because it wasn't real and partly because it cheats the fans out of what they came for in the first place.

Yep, no doubt he hated it. Totally what he is NOT about and what he does NOT want to portray.

I think if this song was anything other than TMBGITW, he would not have done it. That song in particular was extremely important to him as it was the one off he was able to do on his own outside the Warner contract, proving to them, and himself, many points he was contending at the time.

As this song had nothing to do with Warner, I believe he did. Also, I am talking about his choice to show up at all, not his choice to lip sync or not.

I'm sure he hated lip syncing but the dancing in that performance was flawless. It would have to been totally different if it included a live music performance. I like that he was able to do both when he had to. I always loved that song.

You don have a choice about lipsnycing on most televisions shows it has nothing to do with artist or the lable. The producers of the program make that decision.

I was never in disagreement with that, my whole point Laura was about his decision to take the gig knowing he had to lip sync, which I believe he only did due the importance of the success of that particular song. Shall we create 3 more pages of posts for no reason?

You went down this road not me. Artist have to promote their work and they do not have a say. I assumed everybody knew this.

With TMBGITW he had full control of his decisions to promote or not, no push from any label, he was the label. So yes, he had a say.

I have a full tank of gas, ready to continue down the road when you are. I love learning new things, especially from the most knowledgeable person on the planet when it comes to Prince <insert sarcasm here>

It's quite a demanding song to sing to begin with, nevermind having to do it live while dancing in time. He never nailed it like he did the record, I regard as his best vocal, technically and emotionally speaking.

I think it was more his choice than he let on because some of the performances that same show were not lip synced. I will never forget my disappointment watching the Brit awards when he performed emancipation and it was all a backing tape. I couldn't believe it. The best live performer in the world, chose to do this bloody performance. He did make up for it a few years later though with Wendy and Lisa. Funny though as i think he forgot some of the words to Fury but disguised it very well.
