PRINCE MUSICAL - PURPLE RAIN UK MUSICAL THEATRE TOUR 2018 - CANCELLED

***Update 24 August 2017***

This show has now been cancelled as the shows producers did not have the right to use any of Prince's music. Simple as that.

***Update 2 June 2017***

This has now been officially confirmed on What's On Stage website. Directed by the guy that did Thriller Live plus others.

http://www.whatsonstage.c...43758.html

Update 17/5/17

This is kind of a confirmation but not from an offical source. I have a friend that works for a UK theatre (the kind of theatre that puts on musicals and plays). It is the most attended theatre outside of the West End and has the largest stage. Large shows come there all the time. Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Cameron Mackintosh, Wicked etc etc.

.

Well he was telling me and my partner whilst we were there last week of the latest shows coming.... Miss Saigon, Sunset Boulevard, The Bodyguard, Sister Act, War Horse and then he said "and they have just confirmed a booking for Prince's Purple Rain for 2018". I asked what does he mean exactly and he simply said "A musical with the songs of Prince and that he doesn't know the storyline or anything else at the moment"

.

I'm mentioning this because everything he has ever told us (that only staff should know) that was happening in the coming 12-18 months has actually happened. And the theatre, like I said, is a major non-West End theatre and they do not put on less than standard shows, so it should be something major.

.

What do you guys think to this "confirmation". What's your thought on an actual musical? Who has the rights to do it?

I've tried googling for some information about it but for the life of me I cannot find a thing

I hope it is a story about a hero trying to save Erotic City from cyber terrorists who created a virus called Computer Blue, causing the city's children (the doves) much heart ache and pain. He could save the citizens of Erotic City, called the Beautiful Ones, by magically turning the rain purple and cleansing their souls of the terrible virus and thus stopping the doves cry...

... or not.

It will probably be a stage version of the film with an actor trying to be Prince which will be rubbish.

Whether it happens next year or not, it was only a matter of time...

If done right it could be a lot of fun (and a huge source of income for the estate). But the way everything has been handled so far...

Purple Rain is a musical already so it would be an easy thing to put together. Sounds like it could be fun. I'd buy a ticket.

I hope it's based on the Robert TOWNSEND skit Rock Cops with Prince and MJ. And they just throw in music from PR. I wanna know where this rock house is at!!!

Ok, I expected it to happen. I will keep an open mind. Somehow though, I can't see it being any good...

From what I read I imagine it to be using the music of Prince, not necessarily a theatre version of the film or a film of his life. A bit like Mamma Mia! (music of Abba), We Will Rock You (music of Queen).

Either way it will be good to see how it turns out.

So... Our guy worked his ass off for years and years, creating some of the best music ever and now he's reduced to the likes of Abba... sad

Yep. The estate could make a whole lot more money from this than from releasing music from the vault... So... I don't see a Sign O' the Times or a Parade Deluxe coming any time soon... Another sad

For years I've been thinking that Purple Rain should be turned into a stage musical. If they do it right,it could be very successful and lucrative, like Grease.

Dude, Grease was a stage musical turned into a film, just like West Side Story.

Anyway, rubbish idea. Tacky.

I still think it would be amazing smile Purple Rain was a very big,80s movie with memorable songs.I'd like to see it live on as a stage musical.

And it'll be called Lust, along with an album of mashed-up, remixed and re-imagined Prince songs.

Oh dear. Prince was extraordinary. Every show was different, there was room to jam to change things round. No matter how good these shows are. they are stagnant and tacky.

I'd rather see the full Parade birthday show (Detroit 1986) on a cinema with banging sound.
