In addition to the comments about his naturally androgynous looks, I think he wore it well because he enjoyed expressing himself that way. He was into fashion, so he made choices that reflected him rather than having a manager who said hey put this feminine outfit because it's the trend. He and Bowie were alike in that way. Even when they got less feminine in how they dressed, they still made certain that they had their own style.
