Totally agree!

.

The price of Prince items is illogical.

.

For example, when Prince was alive, the vast majority of his back catalogue was out of print for many, many years, regardless of format.

.

Items then mostly sold for a reasonable price with key collector's items attracting a reflective price.

.

Then Prince died and for some reason these very same items get inflated ten fold.

.

But these items had alrerady been out of print for decades in some cases.

.

Doesn't make sense!!!!

Dead artists always command more $$. It's a (not tasteful) long running joke. Did you see what the Basquiat painting went for last week? Van Gogh sold one painting in his actual lifetime - to his brother.

This is a little different.

.

A painter many product 50 to 100 decent artworks in their lifetime. When they die, obviously they won't be producing any more. As more people urge to possess such an artwork, the price goes up.

.

The issue I have is that many Prince items have been out of print for decades and no one was bothered about buying them... until now.

Still the same issue. He is no longer here. That's just how people are. The prices may go down again.

I have both the Madhouse albums on CD but they are also still in the original long boxes. Does anyone remember the long boxes for cds that they used to have in record stores so they could be put with vinyl?

I've got the first Madhouse CD, but I threw the box away when I bought it. What's the point of keeping it in a sealed box if you can't listen to it?

My recollection is the long boxes were created to make it harder for shoplifters, before the environmentalists squashed 'em to save trees. lol

It does make sense, if you understand supply & demand.

All those people that couldn't be bothered to keep up with Prince when he wasn't popular anymore and came back to him after he died increases demand for out of print releases. The supply was already low, now the demand is up and so the prices reflect this.

That said, some of the prices are ridiculously high. Eventually, reissues will decrease demand for first pressings and the prices will drop somewhat.
