Sabotage - Can I Play With U (4 Disks) - Discussion

NO SOLICITING FOR BOOTLEGS! Discussion is fine, so long as the bootleg is not being promoted e.g. pre-release; requests/offers to share or copy, and links to download or bootleg sites are not.

SAB #479-482

Total Playing Time: 318 min

4 CDs - Soundboard Studio
About this Parade-era studio release:

"Prince recorded most tracks on this 4-disk set in 1985/85 at L.A.'s famous Sunset Sound studios. The Revolution have not embarked on their Parade tour yet, but they have all songs for that particular album in the can already. Prince jams with the Revolution members Wendy, Lisa, & Eric, along with Sheila E. and Levi Seacer, Jr., who are soon about to replace Bobby Z. and Brownmark in his next band. Jonathan Melvoin (Wendy's late brother & inventor of 'Around The World In A Day') also guests on percussion. As they are developing totally new material, Prince switches back and forth between guitar and mic, bass and even drums!

On a good half hour of the sessions herein are known as 'The Flesh' album. Everything else is unreleased soundboard material by Prince from this world-famous studio, now presented in meticulously remastered shape. Much of it is even filling a major gap in the mid-80s Prince science per se! On top of that, this release features 2 songs that Prince explicitly dedicated to Miles Davis plus 4 different version of a song that he actually recorded with Miles - 'Can I Play With U?'"

Besides The Flesh sessions, is there anything on this that we haven't heard before, in terms of versions or sound quality?

The already circulating outtakes are of the same quality, no upgrade.

"Crucial" and "Joy In Repetition" are reconstructions of released and unreleased versions, nothing to talk about.

New (to me, don't know to others) are two versions of "Can I Play With U" and "Conversation Piece", that it seems not be part of the Flesh Sessions.

All in all, if you consider this release as a 3CD instead of a 4CD (relegating the rehashes to one disk) it is one of the more important bootleg releases in P's history.

I agree.I put the The Paisley Jam tracks on one CD. It's a wonderful listening experience. Like having a new album.l

Disk 1 is some interesting stuff. A lot on there I've never heard before. And I'm not always drawn to Prince's jazzy side. I have zero interest in N.E.W.S. or C-Note type stuff. Xpectation sounds like adult smooth jazz 92.5 FM - coming up next John Tesh's latest, followed by classic George Benson.

But given the time frame this was recorded, and that some of it is very pre-Madhouse sounding, it's an interesting listen for sure. If it was 2004 Prince with Rhonda and Renato - meh.

The hour-long "Junk Music" - I mean, come on! worship

I never said that, or even close. We've never heard the full version before. I also said Disk 1 is interesting stuff given the time frame, etc.

But isn't the full version of Junk Music simply the two sides of The Flesh album combined?

Yeah, it's just something that happens sometimes. I've seen it happen several times before, even with a mod-made link (the mod, I don't remember which one, managed to fix that link) . I figured it was supposed to go to the Flesh Sessions thread.

So, "02-07 Can I Play With U [Different Intro]" (version #1) is the version that's been circulating since the 80s (with more or less butchered intro/outro).

.

I've aligned "01-01 Can I Play With U [Miles Davis 1986 Rough Mix]" (left channel) and "03-12 Can I Play With U [Miles Davis Final Mix]" (right channel), listened to the result, and to my ears they're exactly the same version (version #2). Are they really different mixes? Again, not to my ears. The 03-12 track is faster than the 01-01 track, but that's it, unless I'm mistaken (which is not unlikely).

.

"04-04 Can I Play With U [Long Version; More Prince Overdubs]" (version #3) is the version that started circulating in 2010 (?).

.

Do we agree that, chronologically, version #1 (02-07) came first (March 1, 1986?), then version #2 (01-01 = 03-12), and then version #3 (04-04), which is probably the version that Marcus Miller prepared for "Tutu"?

So The Flesh is the only new material?

I think I have only 2 versions of CIPWU? (the old one and the longer one from 2010), so I'm confused: you're saying one of those is twice the same but yet, there are 3 versions altogether?

What is Conversation Piece?

Was the G-Spot remix already circulating?

Thx wink

Version #2 of "Can I Play With U?" (= track 01-01 = track 03-12) is completely new to me.

.

"Conversation Piece" is an instrumental by Prince and Eric Leeds. Completely new to me.

.

So, to sum it up, what's new:

- most of The Flesh sessions

- version #2 = "Miles Davis 1986 Rough Mix" (track 01-01) = "Miles Davis Final Mix" (track 03-12) of "Can I Play With U?"

- Conversation Piece

.

I'm not sure about the G-Spot remix. I think it's new to me. But I might be mistaken.

.

What's definitely rehash / fan-made cr*p:

- versions #1 (track 02-07) and #3 (track 04-04) of "Can I Play With U?"

- Heaven

- Wonderful Ass

- It's a Wonderful Day

- Get On Up

- In A Large Room...

- Baby Go-Go

- Joy in Repetition (= fan-made, and a bad one...)

- Crucial (= fan-made)

- Witness 4 The Prosecution

- Come Elektra Tuesday

- Euphoria Highway

- Cosmic Day

- Eternity

- Miles is Not Dead

.

"Miles Davis Talks About Prince" is bits of interviews that you can find on YouTube or elsewhere.

I was really hoping for an excellent quality G-Spot with Prince on vocals, I don't care for another remix with Jill Jones.

.

As to the other songs, I am very disappointed that they were included on this set, as they got my hopes up for new, better quality versions, but they weren't. In some cases worse than what's already out there.

.

Also, they have nothing to do with The Flesh sessions, so why include them? It makes the whole thing less than if they weren't included.

a stunning collection in mostly great sound quality. Amazed at the quality he was producing in the 84 - 86 period yet so little got released.

As for the Sabotage release - DO NOT BUY IT!. It's free as a rarfile if you can arsed to look hard enough for it. BTW ...dont DM me for a link!
