Underappreciated Songs - First Three Albums

In celebration of Prince's music, I will be targeting a few albums in chronological order every week (if there is interest) for people to mention undervalued songs from those albums. No need to pick a song from each album unless you want to. Feel free to comment on what appeals to you about the song.

For now, the albums are: FOR YOU, PRINCE, AND DIRTY MIND

FOR YOU - So Blue - I notice on song preference surveys that this song doesn't od well. I find it tender and sweet and a reminder of how young he is when he performed it. It set the stage for his vulnerable heartbreak songs.

PRINCE -When We're Dancing Close and Slow - Yes, another sweet romantic song...but it really popped out as something special when he played it at the Montreux 13 concert.

DIRTY MIND - Uptown. yes it is well liked, but I feel it belongs in his top 50 songs if not higher. One of my favorite songs to dance to since I first heard it in college when the album came out.

I’m yours. To me this song is such a stand out for its incredible pace and energy. The drums and guitar work are vicious. The style, performance and composition are an early example of Prince’s ability to slay a rock song.

I said no! is your mama?

Underappreciated:

I'm Yours (For You 1978) this was the song Prince brought up a few years later when people thought he was doing too much rock. He said he let them know on the first album what direction he was going to.

Yes, it pops out well...or rocks out well in the context of all those ballads on that album. It gave a nice hint that he had more in him that the primary style of that album.

Yes lol it does rock out well

I think every person that is discovering or re-appreciating the music has to go back to this album.
It is Prince for the rest of his career -ballads and rock at the foundation of everything

I so need a remastered For You deluxe, any extended versions and the other tracks that were presented to WB like:

Leaving 4 New York

We Can Work It Out

Darling Marie #1
Hello, My Love
I Like What You’re Doing
Neurotic Lover’s Baby’s Bedroom

I’m Leaving LA

Rocking Chair

E-Pluribous Funk

Bump This

In pop song writing terms I think Baby, Still Waiting and When You Were Mine are as good as it gets.
