Prince Conference: Purple Reign - Salford, UK May 24th-26th

Interesting 3 day conferernce at Salford University in the UK, abit pricey at £240, but £12 for the Dez interview might be worth it:

Stickying this, as it's coming up on the event soon (I know we had threads before).

Also - the organisers have given me a media pass to cover the event for the org, so I'll be there taking a few pictures and bringing you a full report!

Due to the way the event is laid out, it's not possible to attend all the panels, but I've picked some interesting ones. And Dez's talk should be awesome!

I'm going - I've seen the various lectures / sessions on offer but wasn't aware we had to choose just yet (or even how to select them). Help! biggrin

Planning to goto Dez session in the evening, due to work commitments I cannot go during the day.

I live in Salford, can't believe a Prince conference is happening here, these things are like buses, I last saw The Revolution in London in 1986, then I see them last week at BB Kings in New York 30 years later, now Dez is in my home town a week later???

I know, I'm in Castlefields so should be easy to get there in time to get a good seat!

Oh, I just mean I've selected them in my head!

My friend Sam Coley, senior lecturer at Birmingham City University is giving the talk on "Prince and online fandom" - he's one of my closest pals and I gave him extensive notes so the org should get referenced a lot in his talk! cool So I'll defo be attending that one, feel free to join us!

If you remember my "Parade" documentary, Sam was the co-producer on that and the producer of the overall series of documentaries that it came from smile

Yep. It's a radio documentary, not visual cool

This is the main documentary.

This is half an hour of "deleted scenes" that didn't make it into the main piece.

And this is the series that the documentary was part of, XFM 25. Each episode was dedicated to an album that turned 25 in 2011 (Albums that came out in 1986) - we won a New York Radio Award for the series, and "Parade" was considered the highlight and got the highest amount of listens. cool

Yep, it does feel abit like that, lots of beardy lecturers in Dicky Bows smile

I'm surprised they have focused on Prince, I would have expected more of a worthy Afro-American Music type thing covering Prince/Michael Jackson/James Brown etc.

It's quite expensive, so unless your are a big fan, I can't seem many Prince fans going, will be more University/media types, but Salford Quays has the BBC & ITV there, lots of media companies also, so there is a big Uni/media campus to attend.

One of our older org members is also a speaker at this event - NuPwrSoul I'm sure some of you know him from NPGMC, Housequake, and here, as well as Twitter and Facebook. He's a historian, academic and educator based in Brooklyn NYC.

I was genuinely hoping to surprise him by showing up to his talk but not sure it's going to be possible from a cost or time point of view (I'm in a Southampton, this is in Manchester/Salford).

Anyhoo, he is extremely knowledgeable on Prince's music, influences and cultural legacy so I'm sure his talk will be very interesting and engaging.
Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Can you make it like a Brad Sundberg seminar and remove our phones and play unleaked music?

Sounds like fun! biggrin Also sounds like one or two of you might have connections with the organizers. Anyway to find out if it's going to be an annual event and/or if they are considering coming across the pond to North America biggrin I am coincidentally going to be IN the UK for those days but have tours and musicals and a Heroes/Villains Fan Fest all in the three days I'll be there err lol

A FB friend of mine contacted the organisers to find out when we'd be able to select the discussions we want to attend. They replied, and said that the list still isn't finalised as there have been some drop-outs, and some new additions. I hope it all falls into place soon, and we get some more details!

Oh, come on, you can't be serious wink

First off, Prince too had a beard

Secondly, not all lecturers have beards because, surprisingly, not all lecturers can grow a beard. Unfortunately, the ratio of babbling bearded scholars to noteworthy scholars that can't grow a beard is greater than 1, but that's another issue.

Happy Mondays were pretty funky and from Salford, I managed bands in Manchester in the late 80's/early 90's and allot of good music came out of Salford/MaDchester in 80's & 90's, like Joy division/the Smiths/James/New Order/Inspirals/Stone Roses. Go back abit further you have the Bee Gee's & 10CC, full of funk.

Also, Aziz Ibrahim is speaking at the conference, he played in the Stone Roses, Fools gold is one of the funkiest tracks you will ever hear.

clearly you aren't a person that's well versed in what FUNK is.

Salford / Manchester/ the stone roses / the smiths/ james/ new order/10cc/ and the Chorlton era Bee Gee's -

***(before they went to america and got produced by others to sound like a Black DISCO group)?!?!

this is Funky to you? erm... ok! lol

since Northern england is so Funky..

please name one (1) successful Original FUNK or Funky group currently active there...

one that isn't playing cover songs in pubs, weddings and various other 'functions'.

Take your time... lol lol lol

Seriously? This again? FWI to anyone that didn't see the other thread I created on this topic-

he clogged up the old thread shitting on Salford and Manchester.

He's a troll. Take no notice, just stay on topic and talk about the conference, guys.
