Sweet! Been waiting for this to go live in the US for days now.

.

I just preordered, and the first thing I did was listen to "Electric Intercourse". AWESOME. A crystal clear, vintage 80s-Prince production.

.

I know a lot of people have been griping about the content of this set, but screw 'em. I'm so happy I'm delirious.

.

(See what I did there?...)

I hope that June 7, 1984 legendary first
avenue show comes out one day.
Also the aug 3,1983 show as well.
It's amazing that both of these couldn't
be on this reissue.
I think they are more important then that
syracuse show.
I read that at the PP celebration
The last date of the PR tour was shown on film.
Oh well

I'm loving EI and really looking forward to the rest of the vault disc. But something just dawned on me this evening. It's nearly two months until this comes out! I'm impatient already. lol

Ugh. I know. Time fucking sucks! mad

lord. i'd pay double if i could just have it NOW! lol

I would too. I haven't even listened to Deliverance yet. But I want this deluxe PR set NOW.

Loving this track so much. However, I'm kind of more into the EP. Musically, Electric Intercourse sounds a little rudimentary, comparatively speaking. Even though I love it.

eek Is it because I preordered the album with MP3, so no expanded version?

Edit: I found the right one.

They have so many different ones in the US available to pre-order. I bought the one with the MP3 digital download at first, then realized it didn't come with the DVD! I'm good now though. This link has the right one. http://amzn.to/2pqXHIv

Question . Is the reason WB used the studio version of Electric Intercourse instead of the First Ave live version would be because WB does not have ownership of the live version ? ?

I don't thing anyone on here knows the contractual arrangements, but I say this...If WB rights don't inclide live, then how does the 4th disc contain a live performance?

My guess is the whole PR deluxe package was agreed as whole, with PRN, in return for the masters. But if P didn't frame that in a timescale, then that explains the potential feud between WB and Universal.

Obviously sound quality and packaging will be the final decider on this but I would say this is a good release. The issue is clearly that Warners told us we would be getting more and therefore set our expectations and Many of us are now disappointed In the Rolling Stone article it said... When we make any of Prince’s music available to fans - from the hits to unreleased gems - we are committed to upholding Prince’s high creative standards and we know fans will be thrilled when they hear these albums and see these films," Warner Bros. Records CEO Cameron Strang said in a statement. You don't get a more senior source than that to quote! He said albumS and filmS plural (yes albums could mean Purple Rain itself). [Edited 4/28/17 11:26am]

Could very well be that The First Avenue concert and other vault material are in the Estate's hands and since the WB deal technically covered WB catalog material, they needed permission.

I'd heard at some point that WB Purple Rain release was a special deal when it came to the deluxe project - separate from their distribution of the rest of the WB work and that Universal (or whoever takes over if they bail) would handle all other vault stuff.

All that being said, it could be that what we waited for is in the hands of the estate waiting for negotiation.

I think it has been established that there are two deals with the Universal deal under threat:

1. Warner Bros signed deal in 2014 with Prince that returned to Prince the master tapes but then gave WBR exclusive rights to release the WBR era albums. Some of the albums have specific deals such as Purple Rain (which WBR retain distribution rights to for ever). In addition this deal covered vault material recorded over that same period (clearly the purpose for such a deal would be to enable WBR to compile deluxe editions).

2. Universal Records signed a deal with the estate in Feb 2017 for distribution rights for all of Prince's post Warner albums and all of the vault material from 1996 onwards (however it appears Universal thought they were going to eventually also get access to the golden goose of the Warner years releases).

And for those folks saying THIS package is what Prince delivered to Warners I say NO WAY. I would be willing to lay money on the Prince version of PR remastered as having, at most, just one or two unreleased songs (one being Electric Intercourse as he played it live in 2014). I truly believe it would have been 2 X CDs with CD 2 being closer to the single edits b sides and 12 inch edits along with one or two unreleased. There is no way Prince would have included We Can Fuck on there.

I would not be so sure about that I am sure there was something in the agreement that gave him final say and many people said he was not so hard core JW as he had been.

Think about songs like Exlier. He also appeared to be dating a few young ladies so I do not buy that no sex and no cursing stuff.

True. He even swore on Funknroll so I agree there was a relaxing of the JW side.

Actually Laura thought about this some more and still strongly believe THIS set is not what Prince envisaged (swearing point aside).

Pure speculation on my part (just being clear in that before someone like Bart comes along and accuses me of speculating) but Susan Rogers is on record saying Warners were taking their time with this to get it right. Well if Prince had delivered/finalised HIS version then why did they need to take time to get it right?

Also the whole delay would be explained because Prince didn't deliver to WBR what they expected or wanted from a deluxe edition. They are smart enough to know that if you want to sell something to fans again you need to give them something extra/new (although hopefully learned that you shouldn't mislead people with your press release).

Also wasn't Prince quoted back in 14 or 15 saying that Purple Rain remaster was just the album with no extras? I can imagine Prince doing that..."PR is perfect and will sell all over again so it doesn't need anything extra".

That does kind of undermine me saying I think Prince's version would have had one or two extra songs but my "evidence" for that is him performing EI live in 2014. Seems too much of a coincidence.

Back to the swearing. If Prince had relaxed his JW beliefs a bit then I can see him justifying to himself that he shouldn't mess with previous work (Darling Nikki) but that new songs he wrote didn't need to be in a similar vein?

Edit due to bloody iPad autocorrect ggrrr

Hi there, I am getting strong signals that Warner is definitely listening to the comments posted here and elsewhere online. They ARE 100% aware of the expectations based on previous statements. I am convinced they are working hard getting the First Avenue 1983 show up to standards for release.

Unfortunately, it won’t be in time for the announced June 23rd release, but that was the original plan.

It's not someone’s deliberate choice or fault, it's just a matter of how things are, production-wise.

I am confident to say though, that our patience will be rewarded BIG TIME, based on a sample of Let’s Go Crazy, I cranked up the volume and was amazed!

Thank.

That makes perfect sense. I can easily imagine the CEO being slightly unaware of specific technical issues and making a statement and people lower down going "oh shit did he just say that, someone needs to tell him this vault material is in a bad condition and is going to take a LOT of work to sort out"

However, this is typical of big corporates in that they do not realise the power of social media and that treating their customers with respect and as human beings is so important. They need to make an official statement if this is true and say...

"Sorry guys our original plans were not possible given the quality of the vault materials and we didn't want to delay this release any further. We are working to get the other material we originally intended to include up to scratch and hope it will be coming in future".

Jeez they need better PR people!

@Sifi, is this from the First Ave performance? How did you get your hands on this? Very intimate footage. Terrific.

I bought a copy of this on VHS in Minneapolis at a record swap around 1996. It's been circulating, but this is definitely the best audio I've ever heard of it!

I spent a full day being pissed at Warner Bros. Now all is right in the world (so to speak). This sample is great!
