Well it looks like Alfred Jr, wasn't a JR. after all, his dad's name was Alfred B. Jackson, his name is Alfred Frank Alonzo Jackson.

http://www.mncourts.gov/m...trator.pdf

The following is from an interview from ET with Alfred.

.

Another poster on the forum had said that Alfred still lived in KC and wasn't mentally capable to sign any kind of legal paperwork and someone had his power of attorney so they could sign for him......Looks like that poster didn't know what she was talking about....(as usual)

Jackson, who joined the Air Force when he was 21 years old and now resides in St. Cloud, Minnesota, says he hadn't spoken to Prince in 15 years.

http://www.etonline.com/n...ies_grief//

Sharon has POA over John Jr and he does still live in KC and Alfred has been in and out of mental facilities for years. Alfred's problems were first told by Charles who said that Alfred came to stay with Mattie and know one ( I assume he means himself ) knew much about Alfred's background but Charles did say he was always doing crazy stuff even before he went to Vietnam and just got worst when he came back.

-

As far as Frank and Mattie maybe they were never married because Mattie's and John's divorce papers were placed in the court file.

That's interesting. Care to elaborate?

[803's comment]: I'm not from the area but have deep family roots in the area and spent time with relatives in the area...I'm older than prince and I remember sitting around kitchen tables with relatives in the late fifties and sixties and hearing that remark..sometimes other words were substituted for "bad". And these discussions were usually accompanied by some reference about how they didn't have the problems of Milwaukee or Chicago cuz the cold weather kept "them" out. According to advertisements I've seen, prince's father played in some of these areas and prince himself has referenced playing "white" music in the area when he was young. And, watch his expression when he says this..I see a little knowing smirk... I hope I'm not being too controversial or explicit...but, as a child I remember being offended by the remarks and I can vividly remember the discussions and the people involved...unfortunately, they were some of my favorite relatives and it was hard to reconcile my love for them with the hateful remarks. [803]

[bsprout] Thanks for sharing. If he was being sarcastic, that smirk while he says this would be very Prince-like, indeed.

I don't think he was being sarcastic. Back in the day you had sundown towns. Towns in which black people had better not be in at sundown. No reason to think that if you wanted to be away from minorities you would move somewhere cold and remote.

I meant to say Alfred not Frank. I did not say they were not married somewhere earlier in the topic another poster questioned if they were married .

I am providing background on Alfred because info about him via Charles was already known. Even the fact that he could sing and wore his hair high like Little Richard.

Use to come into their homes via a basement widow instead of using the front door ( you see this in Purple Rain)

I believe it is the same book, this one just has some updated things at the beginning when Prince died. It's basically the same stuff that has been floating around the forum.

.

The authors are here partaking in this book club and I'm sure they can tell you more info.

.

I found my book on Amazon.

Ok, so I have finally decided to buy the paperback from Amazon. I don't want to read it in digital format, spend too much time already looking at the screen at work and, besides, the good weather has started so it will be a great companion to take to the beach with me.
Hopefully I will join the discussion soon. cool

This is NOT a quote from the book. This is a paraphrase that someone wrote on an Amazon review, and it is NOT a direct quote. See page 32 of the book for the actual words.

Hi, thanks for the question. The book is a greatly expanded and updated version of the first half of Possessed. You can buy it on Amazon, in either paperback or Kindle versions.

Is this getting in the way of some deep insightful discussion that you'd like to have about something else? (That was a rhetorical question, please don't bother to answer. Lawd)

It is quite different from Possessed. The Rise of Prince takes the first half of Possessed, and greatly expands it and updates it. I think some readers who have read Possessed recently will recognize parts of Possessed in the book, but if you haven't read Possessed in years, I doubt it will be recognizable.

I don't think you are a mod. Because you know what. I got permission from a MOD to start this book club. You don't want to participate? Don't. Why ya keep comin back? You don't have to come here and derail the thread. This forum is to discuss all things. Don't like the thread...don't come here.

.

Nobody ever said that this book is the 'end all be all' of Prince literature. It is simply a book, that we are discussing. We have discussed Maytes book and now we are discussing this one.

.

If I could I would create a new forum, but ya know what? I'm not Ben. I can't and besides the fact who the hell do you think you are?

Nobody was moving away from minorities...at the time Minneapolis had a much smaller percent of minority population than Milwaukee or Chicago...some people from the area used to say it was because it was too cold for minorities...had nothing to do with sundown towns...

I don't know if he had ever heard this or not...so I have no personal knowledge as to whether he was being scarcastic...

I'm just saying that this was a saying among some white people in the area...and it predates his comments...and I know that as a fact...that's all.

Yes - the man you saw interviewed had to have been Art Erickson. He ate lunch with Prince many days at school, and the principal allowed him into the school cafeteria because Art was launching a lot of neighborhood programs and needed to connect with students. He said Prince was a loner - and he thought it may have been that because of the color of his skin, Prince didn't quite fit in any of the established cliques.

Art is an brilliant man with a huge heart and he has done great things in Mpls. In addition to Prince, Art also knew Paul Mitchell, Duane Nelson (he was the minister who presided over Duane's funeral), Kirk and Kevin Johnson and many, many others. He is also an expert on father abandonment and was extremely helpful to us in understanding that aspect of Prince's life. I was able to meet and interview Art at his offices at Urban Ventures. Check out his amazing work here: https://urbanventures.org/

Chapter 5~Graduation Pgs 87-93

Yay! Prince graduated from High School. I’m glad he stuck it out when he so much family turmoil going against him. He had his own band at this time and playing and practicing with them, and had to live with the Anderson’s.

.

Paul Mitchell’s family welcomed him into their home and Prince acted just like Mrs. Mitchell’s child. LOL

.

Tyka and Prince noticed that their grandparents were heavy drinkers and that Duane’s mom (Vivian) became an alcoholic also...Is addictions passed down from generation to generation?

.

Grand Central was one of the most notable young bands in the State, but they didn’t have the money to push the band forward to be able to get into the studios.

.

It was really cool that he used 2 tape recorders to record the music then singing to the music recording.

.

One of his 1st recordings using this method was Sweet Thing by Rufus. And this led Prince to the idea that he really didn’t need a band, he could do it all himself, like Stevie Wonder did.

.

Grand Central changed their name to Shampayne to avoid confusion of The Graham Central Station group.

.

The group saved enough money and was able to get a recording session at Moonsound, ran by Chris Moon. Chris Moon liked Prince’s work ethic and asked Prince to provide music for Moon’s lyrics, Moon gave him free studio time in exchange & Prince made full use of it. The other band members didn’t like it and forced Prince to choose between the band or Moon, he chose Moon.

.

Bobby Z. Rivkin enters the picture.

Penny, where does P's going to NY and meeting Pepe Willy and Pepe Willy having Andre and P record on 94 East fit into this timeline?

Pepe entered the picture in Chpt 3. LOL lol

.

Pepe was dating Prince's cousin & Prince called him in NY and asked him lots of questions about copyrights & other legal matters. I think this took Pepe by surprise that a teenager was interested in these things and he told Prince that he would get with him next time he was in MN.

.

In Chapter 4, Pepe came back to MN and attended some of the bands rehearsals. Of course, Pepe was impressed with Prince & asked him to play guitar for 94 East in MN at some recording sessions.

.

Isaac Hayes was mentioned also in chptr 4.

--

Each chapter is short, but has so many different people involved that it's hard to cover all in a timeline, but I figure what I left out, others will pick up on and discuss.
