Super Awesome...

Ive never seen these..

Interesting to note How Prince worked the move and perfected it..

James looks absolutlely clumsy no offense ...just noticing how hard Prince worked at everything...

when Prince does the splits it looks effortless.

watching James...

well

I can practically feel his bone s crack lol

James kept it up even when he got older. You don't get to be the GODFATHER OF SOUL for nothing. worship

Brand new boogie without the hero.

The last two are from his “Rumble In The Jungle” gig in Zaire. I think that he would have been in his early forties. It isn't bad! smile

James Brown was older and a mess at the time, compared to his prime when he was super fit and looked like an athlete. He was in his mid thirties when he "invented" funk as we know it. He was born in 1933. This video is from 1974. He must have been 41 or something?

Saw JB at the old Lone Star in NYC in the mid 80's. He did most of the show from on top of the bar. Absolutely killed it in a sparkly blue jumpsuit open to his navel. He llooked amazing.

Nobody even close to doing that move like Prince. Miss them both. Hope it's not the end of an era.

Brand new boogie without the hero.

Others will take up the mantle in some form or another. Beck deserves a 5 or 6 for effort at least:

^^^ Thread title is The Makings of Prince - not exclusive to musical influences? Works for me and a great photo.

Jason Shawhan article. Dez Dickerson - "The rockabilly obsession was sparked by seeing the Stray Cats in London, before they came back to the States and broke. We were all blown away with them - the look, Brian Setzer's amazing sound, just the sheer authenticity of it. We started wearing pompadours immediately!"

I did not realize we were limiting our suggestions for influences. Influences can cross many domains. I think Bowie and the presence of Bowie was a fairly substantial influence. Style, gender roles, male femininity, all important to Prince.

Hi Dini. We're not. Someone mentioned Charlie Chaplin earlier. Bowie has already been mentioned, but your post is completely valid. Bowie was clearly an important conceptual influence – his androgyny, his shifting persona, his theatricality etc. smile

LoveJunky, thank you! I kept tryna get the pics to show but they came up broken so I just put the links.

I'm still looking for pirates, buchaneers, privateers, dandies and Baroque aristocrats that remind me of LoveSexy.

Here's a different hairstyle on young Mattie Shaw, the jazz singer. I would not have guessed that this was she, but according to a documentary, History of Prince in Minnesota, this is Prince's mother. It's ironic that, for weeks, no one thought to include her in this thread on "The Makings of Prince," when chances are, Prince inherited the gift of song from his mother.

Love that younger days photo Fly! Somebody said one of those other photos was her twin in another thread. Or did I get that wrong?
