Way back home, heartbeat in the song?

Is that prince's heartbeat in the song just altered? I was reading an article about this song and they'd said they wondered about that too.

been discussed on here, it was assumed to be the heartbeat of the fetus of his son but I don't think that's been confirmed.

If this is true then he was in more pain than anyone could ever imagine.

either way its a gorgeous song, I listened to it a couple hours ago and it broke me up (again). I had visions of wishful thinking, picking him up off the elevator floor and getting him help.

No. It's percussion filtered with white noise courtesy of Joshua Welton. Not meant to sound like a heartbeat.

interesting, i didn't analyze any of that to that depth and really didn't try to interpret a lot of the talk between songs.

If you listen to the first beat of the song, it's percussion (almost like sticks or other percussion, then the filter kicks in by beat 2, ... they're filtered behind the track as well, with a wah-wah effect. That's what you're hearing.
