Nagoya version of Murph Drag (Live 7th Feb 1989)

I really love this live version of the track (as found in City Lights vol 7), with that funky “marimba” sounding part. Does any one know whether that was incorporated from another track or studio version, or was it just a temporary live arrangement? I know that I’m probably clutching at straws. Thanks all. Banzai!

Yeah, I wasn’t sure how to describe it, it’s the kind of sound that you might get from a DX7. Much funkier than the studio version that I’ve heard, just wondered whether he lifted the part from an alternative version or incorporated it into another track, as he did with IGBABN/Six and Madhouse’s Four. As I said, long shot. Love it though.

He started using that sample sometime during the middle of the US leg of the Lovesexy tour (in the jam after "Head"), I figured it was just a preset on one of the keyboards they were using.

Thanks for the info duggalolly. Yes, a sample makes more sense now that you mention it. It was probably just an arrangement that he experimented with live then. Are there many other similar performances of Murph Drag from this period floating around? I’d love to him him jamming on that groove for a little longer.

I have been blasting this Nagoya show for years. I have always ..ALWAYS ..wanted to knw what that sound was b/c it was so damn funkay!!! Eric Leeds, in a recent interview with Michael Dean, said that he'd forgotten how amazing that band was. He said he'd slept walked through the tour but after watching a video of a show said the band was ' on fire' and do I ever agree.

Reading the recent books, I was surprised to learn that Prince initially want to take the tour to Japan as he'd mentally moved on from the whole Lovesexy thing. Apparently he was motivated by the money being offered...you would not know from the shows. His performances of Purple Rain at Nagoya and Sendai are just amazing.

Truly amazing what he was....and sad that this estate seems unaware of how amazing he was...and how he served it all up on a plate for them to take full advantage of. They could so easily start releasing material that blow the socks off everything out there.

Yes, it's great JoeyCococo, I just wish that the Murph Drag performance was a little longer. As you say, funky as hell. Thanks for the information. smile

Let me correct what I mis-stated. Prince did NOT want to take the Lovesexy show to Japan as he'd moved on mentally but the tour lost money and he was getting paid well to go there. You would not know he was reluctant from those amazing Senda and Nagoya shows. There just will never be another.

I'm about 98% sure I know what you're referring to. It begins when Head ends and segues into Love Bizarre, correct? First time I heard it was on the Pittsburgh Lovesexy boot, and it blew my feeble, unworthy mind. Unfuckingbelievably funky. It's essentially just a sample, but Jesus H does it take the music itself to another level. I wonder how he stumbled upon it...because there's just no way he wouldn't have included it at the start of the tour had he been aware of it. It was/is simply too fresh for him to have saved it for later. Isn't it astounding how this guy continues to amaze us collectively after being seasoned fans for so long? I really hope the estate speeds up the process (if at all possible) so they can get the vault in check, and unearth some of those US Lovesexy shows. Everything I've heard from that leg has been just outstanding. Not to take anything away from the Japan gigs, of course. Him and the band were simply on fire during the America run.

Yes, that’s right, but there’s a brief rendition of Girls & Boys before A Love Bizarre I believe. It’s on CD4 of City Light’s R&E Vol 7. It may have been a stock “koto” type sound that he used in light of being in Japan (has that kind of feel). In anyone else’s hands it could have sounded goofy, but it just works. Seems too good not to have been used elsewhere. Love the Japanese battle cry at the beginning as well – Prince was a funny f@#k%r, always makes me smile. I was convinced that he was shouting “Bonsai!” for ages. smile

Gents, i guess it is not just me thinking the Lovesexy tour deservers multiple releases. The shows were so chereographed but wherever they strayed from the main set it was INCREDIBLE.

Here is another musical passage you will know as you both sound well versed in Lovesexy. Do you remember the Philly show where Patti Labelle joins during I wish u heavan and just goes wild? OK, the same A Love Bizarre (I think) passage is different in that he has this very long even horn part played ...he called it 'swear horns' or something. I loved that for all theese decades but do not know of any soundboard shows. Besides Japan, and the released Dortmund show, were there any other circulating soundboards?

BTW, I was at the Lovesexy Toronto show and I SWEAR he pointed at me and my friend just as he went wild on guitarclosing out The Cross.!!!!

Hi JoeyCococo, sorry about the slow response. The “Sign O The Times” film and the 2 “Lovesexy Live” videos were the things that really captured my imagination as a 12/13 boy in the early 90s. I'm not an expert on the 88/89 period by any means, but I really enjoy the Lovesexy rehearsals. I've always loved what Boni brings to the table. I've been listening to the München set a lot recently. Those James/Sly/Al Green jams are amazing. As I said, I was kind of hoping that there was an extended Murph Drag jam floating around.

Thanks for the pointers, I haven't heard the Philly show so I'll seek it out.

I'm no spring chicken, but I was just a little too young to have seen Prince in the 80s. You're lucky. smile

I just got myself the Milan Lovesexy show and it is super clean off the soundboard. Too clean.. you can't even hear the crowd. However, it is pretty amazing ...he does If I Had A Harem which he did not do in Japan. Sounds amazing.
