Andy Warhol Estate Sues over Image of Prince

The pop artist's estate is suing in an effort to avoid being sued itself.

The estate of pop art icon Andy Warhol is suing a photographer to protect his legacy from her claim that he copied her photo of Prince, according to a lawsuit filed Friday in New York federal court.

I would be interested to know who owns these portraits, and what they could be worth now that Prince is no longer alive??

Well, the Warhol estate should know better. They've dealt with similar claims before.

Andy Warhol and the Art of Appropriation http://revolverwarholgall...opriation/

Article concludes with: "With this in mind, maybe Andy Warhol’s famous quote about art being “what you can get away with” really meant “art is what you can get away with(out being sued)”."

Interesting how this one will pan out.

Anyone know what Prince himself thought of these images?

I call myself "millionairess" because it is more motivating than "paycheck2paycheck"

I would find it hard to believe he would be happy about it. A lot of free riding....
Some probably unrelated info: Apparently, Warhol once attended a Prince concert and thought it was the greatest concert ever.
And also: Warhol was known as the Prince, i.e. the Prince of Pop.

In answer to my own question, the exhibition Prince is in the hands of a private British collection.

The fact that they are getting out in front, suing her first, means she could have a case. The night Andy Warhol died from complications of gall bladder surgery, people who worked for him that had keys went in and took what they could get away with. Well known in the art world. Since it is not usually a life threatening procedure, everyone was caught off guard. The problem was how to sell it without getting caught.

What a lovely bunch. Let me see, there's this song in my head : Thieves in the.... Warhol studio.

In answer to rap's question: This is the art collection where it is now (if I'm not mistaken): http://www.hallartfoundat...ol/artwork

This is getting interesting. Thanks for posting rap. Good for Lynn Goldsmith, channeling the spirit of Prince to be paid for her work. The Warhol Foundation non-profit my azz. They are sitting on tons of work and $$$ to sustain and employ themselves for life.

It was not called the factory for nothing. Warhol had assistants beaucoup cranking that stuff out. They stand to make a ton of money from the image of Prince now that he's gone. Trying to say it's a publicity photo instead of a Newsweek photo assignment she was hired for is really going low. So much for supporting artists. Hypocrites much?

I love that GIF she made.

Good on her for fighting back. Like she said - it is obviously a move to step on the little guy (or gal), to bully her into a zero settlement. She has my support. Freedom of speech rolleyes

I'm thinking that there could be other images of notable people that were co-opted in the same way, without ownership or rights. Maybe they are advance litigating to stave off similar lawsuits. Try to establish precedence.
