If he had so many demons and personal issues, how could he create over a thousand songs, master many different instruments, tour constantly, mentor and develop dozens of musicians? The relationship with his father drove him probably but we all have motors that drive us.

He found a transcedence through his music that he perhaps couldn't find in other people, but lots of people feel like that, but there's only one Prince.

Not defending the documentary which was poor but to your point...

Some/most of the greatest artists have been driven to create by their inner demons. It is a trope but one that holds true. It is their very personal torture that enables them to create art that connects to people so strongly...because it amplifies our own (lesser) personal demons!

It is also the case that many "artists" are arrogant narcissists and not particularly nice people!

The best advice given to writers is to write about what you know...

Prince clearly lived through music. He communicated through music. His life was music. You can only sincerely write lyrics and sing about true heartbreak if you have actually experienced it. When you sing about things you care about but have not experienced it "can" come across as insincere (best example I can think of was the huge flack Phil Collins got for Another Day In Paradise...although Phil Collins deserves flack full stop).
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Oh how I wish I'd listened! I've just watched half of this shit, I am now going to delete. This is possibly the worst piece of television about Prince that I've ever seen. Awful, stomach-churningly awful.

You watched the best half. lol

I'd rather have spent my time cleaning the toilet! I was expecting dire but......oh lawd!!!!!!

The show right from the outset portrayed Prince as a man who led a troubled upbringing, confused with his sexuality, a loner and in constant mental conflict at all stages of his life and ultimately was unfulfilled.

Hardly talked about his musical skills at all. Quite a sad documentary.

Good grief. I'm totally ashamed to be British right now. The lamest American accents ever. The lamest acting ever. The lamest singing ever. The lamest miming ever. The lamest dancing ever. And an entirely one-sided depiction of a man whose life was seemingly devoid of a single moment of happiness. Nary a mention of the fact that almost every other person in his world I've heard or read interviews with always mention his sense of humour This made out like he was some kind of Edward Scissorhands living in an attic. What a pile of utterly embarrassing bobbins!
