References in Film to P.

Was just watching 'Unbreakable' (2000), M. Night Shyamalan film. Bruce Willis asks Robin Wright what her favourite song is. 'Soft And Wet' by (The Artist Formerly Known as) Prince she replies.

Also there's a Prince reference in "Shaun of the Dead" when they are throwing records at the zombies . One of the guys tells the other not to thrown "Purple Rain" or "Sign of the times" but it was OK to throw the "Batman" album biggrin

Prince in Books

I have read Jo Nesbo books "The Devils Star" and "Nemesis" and each have a villian in it who's a Prince fan ..a number of references to songs in the books and the Villians nickname is "The Prince" because of his love of the artists....author must be a fan ?

I haven't see last year's horror movie "Green Room" yet, but I remember reading about the reference to Prince in it (band members in the movie name Prince among their "desert island bands):

Oh and this isn't really a reference, but I caught the movie "Risky Business" again on TV recently and noticed that DMSR plays in a scene (when the high-school kids are throwing their "party" with the ladies for hire)

Well it wasn't so much a Prince reference. Tom Jones' version of Kiss as the opener to My Stepmother's an Alien. I heard about it but never actually heard the song, I was rolling for a while.

Prince is referred to at least 4 times throughout Gilmore Girls.

Once by Paris Geller (talking about a girl who writes like Prince, eye for I, U for you). Twice by Mrs. Kim - (Prince made millions touring without cussing, so can you), can't recall the second. Once by Lorelai in reference to the "Lake Minnetonka" scene in Purple Rain. I think Lorelai aslo mentions watching Purple Rain in another instance too.

Writer/ creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is a fam. Lauren Graham mentions P's passing in "Talking As Fast As I Can".

I didn't watch Gilmore Girls but my wife did and I would occasionally see it when she was watching it. There was a reference to Sheila E. once and I believe a character named Cynthia Rose. My wife told me some of those other references so I figured the creator/writer was a big fan. smile

In Pitch Perfect one of the girls mentioned doing back up singing for Prince, and there was another reference which annoyingly I can't remember right now! There was also a character called Cynthia Rose.
And since some people have done TV as well, the other day in Criminal Minds two characters were talking about jazz, and one of them mentioned Trombone Shorty, to which the second guy replied 'didn't he do some studio work with Prince?'. When the first guy praised him for knowing his jazz, he replied 'not really, but I knew a thing or two about Prince'. (Apologies for my terrible account of he scene, but I can't remember the names of the characters; they are both new this season, I think).

In the same film there's a scene in a strip-club with Gett Off playing in the background. Bruce Willis makes a comment about the kind of music in this joint being funk shit

If we're doing TV as well - New Girl. And I mean BEFORE he was on the show. In the Thanksgiving episode where they tried to defrost the turkey in the dryer and it blew up - the apartment was filled with smoke and Schmidt said "it looks like a Prince video in here". And there was an episode where we find out that Winston's go-to karaoke song is Raspberry Beret.

In the series Shut Eye, the main protagonist mentions the Parade album and the effect sometimes it snows in April had on him. Perhaps a deeper reference than most of the ones trading on cliches. One we can probably all relate to that will go over the heads of the wider audience.
