Which DISC is your favorite?

One mistake - Track 11 on Disc 2 is The Plan not Saviour

I am always hard on this album, as I was one of the mugus who paid full whack ($69.95) for it when it was released and now its in $5 bins everywhere (I bought a $5 2nd copy last year for the joy of getting it cheap)

.

1. JAM OF THE YEAR - SEX IN THE SUMMER - SLAVE

2. RIGHT BACK HERE IN MY ARMS - ONE KISS AT A TIME - NEW WORLD

3. SOMEBODY'S SOMEBODY - SOUL SANCTUARY - THE HUMAN BODY

4. GET YO GROOVE ON - EMALE - FACE DOWN

5. COURTIN' TIME - CURIOUS CHILD - LA-LA (MEANS I LOVE YOU)

6. BETCHA BY GOLLY WOW - DREAMIN' ABOUT U - STYLE

7. WE GETS UP - JOINT 2 JOINT - SLEEP AROUND

8. WHITE MANSION - THE HOLY RIVER - DA, DA, DA

9. DAMNED IF I DO - LET'S HAVE A BABY - MY COMPUTER

10. I CAN'T MAKE U LOVE ME - SAVIOUR - ONE OF US

11. MR. HAPPY - THE PLAN - THE LOVE WE MAKE

12. IN THIS BED I SCREAM - FRIEND, LOVER, SISTER, MOTHER/WIFE, EMANCIPATION

.

Bold = 1st place, Italics = 2nd Plain = 3rd and last.

Disc 1, 3 x 1st, 6 x 2nd, 3 x 3rd = 24 points

Disc 2, 6 x 1st, 2 x 2nd, 4 x 3rd = 25 points

Disc 3, 3 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 6 x 3rd = 21 points

.

Disc 2 by a whisker, gave 3 points for a 1st, 2 for a 2nd and 1 point for a last.

.

Comments

1. Sex in summer best, jam of the year fair, slave is dreadful.

2. One kiss at a time slightly over right back here, new world a distant third.

3. Somebody's somebody is great, soul sanctuary is good and Human body is dross.

4. Emale is best of a poor lot, Get yo groove on is slightly less bad than the dreadful face down.

5. Really hard as all 3 tracks are worthy, even 3rd place courting time is good, but Lala is better and Curious child is balletic-ally brilliant.

6. Again 1 and 2 are close, Style is weak, all of Disc 3's first half is weak except track 5

7. Joint 2 Joint and Sleep around are great and close, we gets up is ridiculous bombastic filler.

8. The Holy River is an incredible song, White mansion is really great too. Da da da is the shittiest filler track ever made. It should be 5th rather than 3rd as its atrocious and is 36th out of 36 on the 3 album set.

9. My computer is a good song, Damned if I do is good too, but Lets have a baby is shitty filler.

10. One of us is incredible and best song on the set, I can't make u love me is good too, but George Michael did it better, Saviour is overwrought but okay, a decent last place getter and probably best of all the 3rd place songs.

11. One standout track, the Love we make, a highlight on this patchy album and one song that gets lots of praise from the community, and deservedly so against two absolute shitty filler tracks. In fact both are so bad I gave them 3rd place instead of a 2nd, because neither is worse than the other as they are basal state quality, meaning they are one step above no song at all!

12. In this bed stands out here, although Emancipation is decent and the other track is shitty filler.

.

Overall one his patchiest albums, with 8 major filler tracks and only 4 excellent songs. The rest is very average. Love to see some more opinionz.

Your retailer was ripping people off if that's really what they were charging!

Before 2001 in New Zealand, a new release CD was $32 - $37, a double CD $55 - 65 and Triple CD was $69 - 80. In 1996 the NZ dollar was worth 55 US cents. That was the law under the Musical suppliers act of NZ not abolished until 2001, which monopolised foreign music.

.

As all our CDs werepressed in Germany and had to be imported, with huge mark ups, the cheapest big hitters (Chart acts) were at least $30 a new release. We had mid price CD's (22 - 27) and Budget CDs like 20 Greatest Country and Western Hitz and Gino Marinello Orchestra for $12.95. Cassette was the format for the working class and child music consumer. Vinyl had been killed off before, when in 1987 records were no longer pressed locally and stock was bought in from Australia. This stopped in August 1990, when cassingles and cassette albums were heavily promoted and vinyl was a niche product until the vinyl boom of the mid 2010s.

.

CDs were sold at record shops like Sounz, HMV and wired until 2001 or so, most people myself included brought cassette tape albums until about 1998 as these were only $19.95 - $22.95. I only got a CD player in 1993, but CD's were expensive and tapes were usual. Also many CD players imported into NZ before 2001 at the budget end of the market were poor quality junk from Taiwan and China and they usually skipped on CD's past the halfway point damaging the discs. Tapes generally stopped being bought here around 2005, but the format died in the early 2000s

.

In 2001, we got Itunes and MP3 music streaming which bought prices down, and JB Hifi arrived here along with the Warehouse (Our walmart) getting the right to sell CD's. Princes for the new release CD were capped at $26 for a single disc album and $39 for a double disc. Nowmost new release CD's are $19.95 and drop to $12.95 within weeks, most old albums are retailed around $20. The latest batch of Prince re released albums are all $15 at JB's and that is considered a rip off now.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Disc 2 is the best one. I really enjoy every song... Overall this is a decent album - 7.8 /10 from me, being that it was too risky with lenght of 180min. but with enough diversity to be admired. Great ideas all the way, but production is probably my least favorite Prince output ever.

@Adorecream yes his patchiest. From Emancipation 'till the end of 90's, you can her that Prince had no filter as far as quality control goes. A lot of Emancipation for example has some musically astonishing peaks but of a kind that sounds a lot better in your head. In reality you hear it but some plastic production taste come after listening. Still this is a huge project that i would always recommend.

Wow! Thanks for the info. I made the incorrect assumption you meant US dollar. Makes me realize that all the people in the US who bitched and moaned back in the day about CD prices being too high really didn't know how good they had it. (Personally I always have though CD prices in the US were fair.) That history of music prices in NZ is a trip!

A few words about my choices:

1. Pretty easy choice--though the sequence of songs into the next track is better on the other two discs.

2. New World really benefits from its sequencing--even though Slave and the Human Body didn't beat their competition, the 1,2,3 opening of disc III is superior.

3. I like all three songs quite a bit--and actually prefer the Livestudio and Ultrafantasy versions of Somebody's Somebody.

4. Even though Face Down won its battle, it brings the flow to a halt for me on its disc.

5. Curious Child won, but Courtin' Time makes me move.

6. Dreamin' About U is fantastic. Style's good. Betcha By Golly Wow is... well.

7. Joint 2 Joint is one of my favorites from the album. Sleep Around and We Gets Up are pretty much the bottom of the barrel for me, personally.

8. White Mansion's pretty good--But the Holy River still wins by a landslide.

9. Damned If I Do is just there. Let's Have A Baby... I don't know. I like it okay--but my response is probably hurt by the biographical realities.

10. All three good tracks. A tough choice here.

11. No real challenge here at all.

12. All good--but I really dig the "cold computer"/"screaming" sound of In This Bed I Scream. It's got a bit of the early 80s, but just a bit--not too much.

Disc 1: 2. Disc 2: 5. Disc 3: 5.

If I rated them as discs/individual album experiences--I'd go with Disc 2. One Kiss at a Time and Emale are the only lower points (though they're not that low)--The Plan really just serves as an intro for F,L,S,M/W. There are a lot of strong songs on the other two discs, but there are also more drops in interest for me as the discs go on. Nothing terrible--just a bit less consistent in quality level, and in theme. Disc 2 feels almost like a complete narrative in its structure.

Yeah, it took me aback to read someone calling that song "sh***y." I think it's one of his most joyfully heartfelt songs. The vocals, lyrics, and simple piano are absolutely goregous. He made that song from the depths of his soul, and it shows.

I don't need to do an analysis.
DISK THREE|. I Can't Make U Love Me and One of Us are, in my opinion, two of Peince's best covers, plus The Love We Make.

Always preferred disc 2

This is not music, this is a trip
No, it's not a drug, it's something more hip
Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
Purple music does the same to my brain
