the other reason you may not have heard it is because WDC was never a staple of his liveset, post 85.

.

Except for the Parade Tour. And the SOTT Tour. And the Lovesexy Tour.

I don't think it was played regularly on that tour, certainly not close to every concert.

Right not regulary, some a few concerts...

"In addition, Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done for Me Lately", "Little Red Corvette", "Do Me, Baby", "Bambi", Smokey Wilson's "Don't Make Me Pay for Your Mistakes", Z. Z. Hill's "Down Home Blues", Joni Mitchell covers "Blue Motel" and "A Song for U", "Jerk Out", Fontella Bass' "Rescue Me", "Respect", "Irresistible Bitch", "When Doves Cry", "Thieves in the Temple", "Venus de Milo", "Under The Cherry Moon" and Digital Underground's "The Humpty Dance" were incorporated into the setlist of some concerts."

i don't remember him playing it during the lovesexy tour here, maybe he did but i don't recall. The ones he almost always used were let's go crazy and purple rain even though they weren't as big of hits.

The only times I enjoyed the song live were 1st on the Parade tour, killer rendition 2nd the Purple Rain tour(just a bit faster) but very electric

I believe like 'Imprimis' said, Wendy did the intro sometimes

I agree. I think WDC never came across very well live, except for the Parade tour version.

The Nude Tour - Tokyo show performance was pretty good.

i think i want ya

It seems that people have deciphered the lick:

There are several videos on YouTube, but this guy seems to be well-versed in Prince's material.

I remeber reading here at some point that at a sound check Prince played the opening riff to WDC and ripped it to shreds. Whoever posted the info said it was fantastic.

I'm a pianist not a guitar player, it doesn't look that hard to play, but I'm not a guitarist so i don't know. Maybe one of our guitar orgers will give an opinion.

I thought he did, on the Lovesexy tour. I remember Cat doing the WDC video dance the band did near the end.

It never had the same punch though.

it was usually during the 2nd half

That first opening lick isn't hard to play at all, the second thing he does before the beat kicks in sounds to me not super technically hard but hard to get the exact timing and phrasing down exactly the same way every time. Just my own assumption but it sounds like Prince was "in the zone" and recorded that either as an improv or had a basic idea of what he was going to do and just went off and did his thing in the moment

Thanks, I've always known that there are a million great guitarists out there, I just assumed it was a pretty hard lick if Prince and Gibbons had a hard time with it. I could probably play it on piano without a lot of problems now that I see it broken down.
