I had heard P played sax when he was younger, this confirms it.

The bottom paragraph in that first interveiw was...well...P was gonna go to college and start music lessons again when he was "much older"???

Good thing things didn't go the way his young mind thought they would or we might never have heard of him! Sheesh

eek confused

He gave the most interviews during the Emancipation and Musicology eras. What I noticed also about the interviews in 1996 is that in some of the interviews, he makes his personal life off-limits. But then in some of the others, he shares pretty intimate details, like how on his wedding night, he brought Mayte into their bedroom, showed her the crib, and played "Let's Have a Baby." That's a pretty intimate detail; he didn't share details like that very often with the public.

I noticed that he did a lot of interviews while he was married to Mayte. This might explain why:

Guitar World: You won’t allow your interviews with the press to be tape recorded. Why? Presumably, you’d like to be able to guarantee more accurate representation of our conversation with a recorder.
-
prince : To me, a tape recorder is like having a contract. And I don’t want to have a contract with you. I don’t want this to be business. I want this to be a normal conversation about something that we’re hopefully both passionate about: music. And when there is no tape recorder, our relationship is based on trust. So if you write lies, you’re the one betraying that trust, and you’d be the one soaking up all that negative energy. But I trust you, so we don’t need a tape recorder. And I can talk now, because I’m free. A lot of my music has to do with being free. I’m not chained anymore. And being married to Mayte has made me feel more comfortable with speaking in public.

Thanks for sharing. This one from 2004 from the Las Vegas Review caught my attention:

Prince offers a look at a rough draft of a new song he has written in a journal. It’s intense, political and spiritual. It addresses the notion of “being in the world, but not of it,” as Prince says. It is obvious to him that the ugliness in the world is created by Satan, and he would like more musicians to address such topics as God, free will, current events and jingoism.

“What does it mean to be nationalist? What does it mean to be patriotic?” he says. “I love America. This is our freedom. You’re free to make up your mind.”

Prince clearly has spiritual faith, but does he have faith in humanity? Yes and no.

“There are a lot of wonderful humans who understand God’s will,” he says. “It was not God’s will for us to die or to destroy ourselves.”

But “people who say there is no God” and who live “on the edge—that kind of humanity? No.”

Great collection.

“Anyone who was around back then knew what was happening,” Prince had said two days earlier, reminiscing, “I was working. When they were sleeping, I was jamming. When they woke up, I had another groove. I’m as insane that way now as I was back then.”

classic:

'He can still play the cocky rocker. “I don’t go to awards shows anymore,” he says. “I’m not saying I’m better than anybody else. But you’ll be sitting there at the Grammys, and U2 will beat you. And you say to yourself, ’Wait a minute. I can play that kind of music, too. I played La Crosse [Wisconsin] growing up, I know how to do that, you dig? But you will not do ’Housequake.’"

Here's an interview from 2012 where Prince allowed journalist Greg Kot in to watch a band rehearsal at Paisley Park.
