Prince research - want to be involved?

I'm doing research on the different commemorative events in Minnesota since Prince's passing.

Any local orgers who would speak to me about events and their perceptions of them? Send me an org note if interested.

As the Org name indicates, I really am a professor.

Not local? I'll be looking into the out-of-towners and international visitors for a project in another month, so you are welcome to get in touch, too. I'll make myself available in April, should you be around town.

Thanks, Fam!

I am doing sociological research on celebrity mourning, and in accordance with standard ethics in academia, will give my name, credentials and contact information to anyone who is involved with the research. Academic positions require background checks. I believe my last one was in September. So no need for a red flag, much less 24.

I've already talked to some of you at events around the Revolution concerts and the Official Tribute Concert, and I've hit a point that I'd like to talk to people NOT in the middle of an event in which people are trying to work through their feelings about losing someone.

Should you wish to know more: I am interested in the kinds of public commemorations that people choose to attend, and what about them is meaningful to individuals. I'm also interested in the mourning around Prince because it seems to have a completely different character and scope compared with that around other artists who have recently passed - especially here in Minnesota. I'm currently looking at his importance as a hometown hero of sorts, and in March, I'll move to a new phase of the project in which I look at his importance beyond the state and the U.S.

Why is this research important?

1. There is very little research on music fans in which the researcher talked to the fans. Maybe the researchers read what fans wrote on websites, but didn't give fans the opportunity to answer questions or make opinions known beyond what one fan typed on a thread.

2. Only fairly recently has fan studies moved away from understanding fandom as pathological.

3. There is surprising little academic publication on Prince.

Please feel free to ask any questions publicly that will clear up suspicions. Or send an org note if you have any questions about being involved. I'm open to continuing conversation via org note, on the phone, or in person in a public space in the cities (I'll be in the Minnesota Historical Society library and archives Tuesday, for instance - the first-floor coffeeshop isn't bad, and no ticket required).
