All Day, All night appreciation

I've always liked this Purple Rain era
Unreleased gem.
The way the song opens with that poetic
spoken dialogue & keeps building & building.
It's simply pure genious.
This was Prince at the height of his powers.
Where he could do no wrong.
I hope this is on the PR deluxe, on june 9th

It's a great song for sure. I would actually predict it to land on the ATWIAD deluxe set. Just my guess.

If it did, it would be out of circumstance. The song dates to 1984, and was at the First Avenue birthday gig that year (and in the Warehouse rehearsal video).

It's a song I truly love. It's such a 'band' song - recorded at once, with a few overdubs later. It's just wonderful.

If it's not on the PR stuff, I'd much rather see it on a compilation of unreleased gems of about 12 songs. Not every unreleased song hast to be his version of an existing song (eg: Glamorous Life, or Manic Monday). I'd rather they be things we haven't ever heard, or only had snips of until now. I'd be fine with that, as long as the music gets out, and isn't messed with beyond some tweaking in the mastering process (ie: updating for today's standards).

The circulating (~1985) studio overdubbed outtake is excellent. I wouldn't be so keen on the 'completed' 1986/DF-era version as was used for Jill Jones. The production changes drastically change the entire feel of the song for the worse.

Interesting... For me because Jill Jones' was the first version I'd ever heard of this song and I was really into the atmosphere of her album at the time, I feel the complete opposite about it. Prince's version musically lacks the warmth and intimacy JJ's version has... Having said that I still think both versions are amazing.

The early mid-1980s production trappings on the outtake are more faithful to the source material. The version used on JJ seems to have received a W&L make-over, and drifted too far off course. It would work well in the context of other material from its time period, however.

U're right! I'm sure that it will B included in the PR deluxe. if not, that's not a big issue as it will leave room for other stuff & we're lucky enough to have it in a good sound. I "Count The Days"...till June 9th. biggrin

Love that song
I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

In terms of recording dates it'd be more logical to include it on an ATWIAD rerelease even though it's more consistant in sound with PR. Or it could simply be included on an album of unreleased material from that era.

BUT at the end of the day the most logical place to put it would be on the Jill Jones rerelease alongside all the other vocal guides, that is if WB and/or the estate choose to include Prince's versions on side projects rereleases. Same with G-Spot, BTW.

How do you mean that? My suggestion of Wendy and Lisa working on mixing and overdubs on the song, or the other tracks from its era that it might be compatible with on a record?
