If the other albums get the Deluxe treatment...

A chronological release schedule seems sort of out of the question now, since they've gone straight for the bullseye with Purple Rain. But what about a schedule that sort of 'radiated' outward from Purple Rain? Say, like this:

  1. Purple Rain
  2. 1999
  3. Around the World in a Day
  4. Controversy
  5. Parade
  6. Dirty Mind
  7. Sign o' the Times
  8. Prince
  9. Lovesexy
  10. For You
  11. Batman
  12. Graffiti Bridge, and then everything else in order

Would such a release schedule work for you, or would you prefer they just release them in order? Of course just getting them is the most important thing, but it's something to think about.

SOTT first, being its 30th anniversary this year.

Largely agree but I'd put Dirty Mind aheads of ATWIAD, Controvery, and Parade.

Personally I don't care what order they release the remaining albums in. I just want all of them to get the deluxe treatment!

.

Well... the long players anyway. I don't need a deluxe edition of NEWS, etc. razz

I fully understand why PR got the treatment first, but I would really prefer if they just started with For You and went forward in the future. Maybe SOTT because as someone else pointed out it will be its 30th this year and also like PR it's a contender for his best album, but that's it.

I mean think about, most Deluxe albums will only appeal to diehards. I can only think of a handful of albums that most people would shell out the money for a deluxe edition of.

Hi all – this would be great, pretty much exactly what I've been hoping for. Props to them if Purple Rain Deluxe turns out to be as good as it sounds. That same model, 2 discs of contemporaneous outtakes and 2 live shows applied to each album would be wonderful. I wouldn't really care about the order, but I'd give everything from Dirty Mind to Lovesexy priority. How would they deal with the Black Album I wonder? I consider For You and Prince preparatory albums, Prince's juvenilia so to speak, so I'd give them fairly low priority personally.

Without wishing to be a downer or derail the thread, how likely does everyone think this will be though? Purple Rain is a flagship album and probably the one that the general public most associates with Prince. A 5 disc set sounds fairly expensive for the average consumer, and while most of us here would probably be happy to pay a premium, I wonder how the numbers would stack up in relation to his “lesser known” albums. Perhaps his core fan base is sufficient to make it viable? The Miles Davis boxsets obviously did well, and they were quite pricey (turned out to be a good investment!). I'm not really concerned about “deluxe” packaging, or whether they go the other way and make expensive, beautifully packaged boxsets aimed at a smaller market - whatever is necessary to make it possible.

.

Pink Floyd (another of my favorite artists) did a reissue campaign back in 2011. Their 'big 3' albums -- Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall -- each received three versions: a super deluxe edition (with several bonus CDs), a deluxe edition (with 1 bonus CD) and a standard edition. All their other albums received just a standard remaster with no bonus. And since then, fans and been pleading for deluxe editions for some of those.

.

Personally I don't think we'll have the same issue with Prince, since he has 'The Vault'. I would suspect each of his albums would be released with various configurations. The better sellling albums may include a Super Deluxe edition, where the lesser selling ones might just have a 'normal' deluxe edition and a standard edition.

Thanks injuredpinky. Ideally they'd give each album equal treatment, but you're right – there will be no shortage of material with Prince. It goes without saying, but whatever the approach, I'd like as much musical content as possible with each release. I love everything from Dirty Mind to Lovesexy more or less equally (including the Black Album), so I'd be happy with these albums in any order.

I could never wait that much for Lovesexy Deluxe... 10 years?
I'm not sure they can cope with 3 Deluxe releases a year.
I'd rather go for an anniversary revisited version of the "Homemade Deluxe" bootlegs.
As for "Parade" and "Sign O' The Times" and everything in between, "A Year In The Life" is already out there.

I don't diss the future official releases, it's just that they'd better provide a lot of videos and alternative mixes (what about some tracks vocals-only, or instrumentals?) and HD photos.
Because the audio is already out there, and it got pretty much pristine with time, except for a few culprits.
I really do wish there is a public outside the ones in the know, that will buy and encourage a proper legacy.

Adorecream

SOTT totally, remaster the fuck out of that record and then add cream into it, like extra tracks like Crucial, Dream Factory and Go.

.

After that 1999 and Dirty Mind are next for me, Controversy, Parade, ATWIAD and Lovesexy. After that I am not concerned yet.

.

Then again we are expecting this from a company that has only given us another greatest hits collection in the cheapest possible packaging and versions with one unreleased song that is a bootleg mix. Plus it's February and no sign of this mythological Purple Rain deluxe.

All they have really done is record releases of his early albums and pressing up a few thousand more of his pre 1993 output to sell in wrekka stows that Ka$h in on his death.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Prince's ashed weren't even cold that you're asking people to raid his vault, settle extremely complex legal matters and assemble quality compilations by snapping fingers. Things don't all happen by magic, you just don't go to the vault, pick tapes and release them on the next day. If PR Deluxe is well handled we gonna have a hell of a treat with those 2 albums of unreleased material and at least one previously unreleased live show. We'll see how it's handled but it announces a good direction. Prince used to release an average of 2 or 3 albums a year in his lifetime, + various random tracks here and there. If we keep having that much I guess we can be satisfied with it, even if we all dream of some sort of online store or subscription service with everything being made available at a much quicker pace, which remains a possibility on the long run.

Yes, I agree Databank – the main priority should be to ensure that everything is fully catalogued and properly backed-up and preserved (I’m not sure how much work was done in this regard while Prince was still with us). Then there’s the difficult process of selection, curation and mastering etc. I’d much rather they take their time and do things well, and the press release for PR Deluxe has left me feeling quite optimistic. I also agree that some kind of subscription based database would be the best option for those of us that want to hear the more unfinished, obscure stuff (god forbid that third parties should be allowed to “finish” anything). That said, I’m also quite old-school and like a physical release whenever possible.

Drama queen much? What a ridiculously hysterical statement to make.

Oh I'm sorry, did I post this on the 22nd of April 2016?

Its been almost TWELVE Months, are you seriously saying they couldn't have managed to release more than one single (bootlegged) track in that entire time?

Tbh idc, i just want them churned out twice a year but the albums i see being released first are 1999, atwiad, parade, sott & D&P simply because they were the most successful, most critically acclaimed & most well known by the GP. I'm not sure batman would get the treatment because aren't there complexities around the rights to the material? Tbh, i don't see anything post D&P getting the deluxe treatment.

After Purple Rain, I think 1999 and SOTT would be next, as those three are easily his most famous 80s albums that a lot of people who aren't even into Prince are aware of. Then maybe chronologically after that.

I would think 1999 would be next, then maybe ATWIAD, SOTT & D&P. I think they all will all be rereleased and remastered, but the extend of the Deluxe treatment will vary.

The one I want is Gold Experience in the gold vinyl. A boy can dream...

I'm pretty sure only Purple Rain, 1999 and Sign are on the table for deluxe albums. The rest just don't have the star power of those three records. Maybe the rest of the 80's albums will get some touchups for anniversaries, but I think hoping for anything else is a longshot. With the exception of a fairly quiet release for streaming platforms, I don't expect to hear anything about the prince era ever again.
