My friends are already enjoying Prince on Spotify, Apple Music

I hope this doesn't qualify as a duplicate thread.

I just wanted to share that, as a millenial, the addition of Prince's catalogue to popular streaming sites (let's be honest no one uses Tidal) has already facilitated the listening of his music by my contemporaries. A friend texted me this morning to say, "hey Prince is on Spotify now, I know youre a huge fan. Any suggestions on where to start?" Another friend has been sending me Snapchats of Prince lyrics today. This is quite exciting!

I know folks have various beef with music streaming, but I do think it is fantastic that Prince being on Spotify helps him reach more listeners.

I said no! is your mama?

I,too, think it's a great thing. If Prince's music is gonna survive for future generations to discover and enjoy,it's gotta be really accessible everywhere.Spotify is the way many people listen to music these days.

A younger guy I know (not through Prince) has been tweeting all day the Prince song he's been listening to, with a final tweet that said 'Prince's catalog is so eclectic'

My son told me he couldn't listen to a new artist on Sunday that I told him about; he was too busy introducing his girl friend to Prince on Spotify. lol

You refuse to see the big picture.Prince's music deserves to reach the widest audience possible.People shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to hear one of his many albums.Like it or not, streaming is the main way many listeners discover and listen to music these days.

If you have a streaming licence, you also own. Not to mention distributors like Google Play also allow you to download the files at no additional cost.

--I see the money picture. Do you know he sold the music last year and people had to buy a lot of it therefore, what he was doing by keeping it off of other platforms made the estate money at a time when it was needed. Do you know he got a total of 3 million out of Tidal. Do you think his estate is getting 3 million or getting a penny a stream? I hope the estate got a good deal but do not see how they would be in position to negotiate a lucrative deal with everyone thinking the estate is desperate for cash.

Indeed. Many love the convenience of streaming services. It will generate more interest in Prince's music which can also translate in sales of his music in physical or digital format. I, for one, have bought Prince albums I already own on CDs and vinyl in MP3 format because of the convenience of having them in the cloud. BTW, most Prince albums on iTunes are on sale for $6.99 each this week! cool

This is what i'm talkin bout! It's so nice to know new fans are becoming interested. In the past it has been very frustrating to me how few young people know anything about Prince.

As a new-ish Prince fan who supported re-upping his catalogue on streaming platforms after his passing, I'm very glad to hear this news. On Spotify, there are already millions of listens on a number of his tracks. I've already found my new favourite deep cuts from "For You" thanks to the indulgence factor that music streaming provides. I also prefer to own music, but it's hard to beat the convenience - especially as I'm travelling right now. Can't wait to visit PP in the spring.

I disagree.

Streaming is much more similar to renting indeed. It is like radio (remember, there were times when people had to pay for a radio licence) and pays royalties accordingly.

You do NOT own whatever you listen to through a streaming service.

Legally, you do. And as previously stated, many streaming services offer you the option to download or cache the files.

No, you don't own it. And the technical ability to download or chache the files doesn't mean you'll own them – and doesn't mean you'll have the right to use them after your subscribtion to the service expired.

It's great that more people can now hear P for free. I just watched an interview with him and Kurt Loder where he said that one day he would give away all his music for free. Maybe he wouldn't have done the deal with Spotify or others(unless it was already in the works before he passed), but there it is; out of his own mouth...

Oh, and I'M on Tidal...I guess that makes me a "nobody".

A nobody who gets to hear MORE of his catalogue than peeps on Spotify or wherever so razz!

I am talking about two things. Artist get pennies as their royalty rate when music is streamed. The bulk of your monthly payment goes to the streaming company. Buying music outright is better finacially for artist.

I would like to buy some music starting today on one of these streaming services. Which service has the most of his songs?
And which is cheaper?
Can someone break this all down simply to assist others in making a good choice?
Thank you.
