This release should really be grand, everything you'd expect after all these decades. It should be professionally curated, mastered, presented, marketed. It should contain ALL the known and unknown material that is in any way relevant to Purple Rain.

They better make sure they get this one right for us real fans and deliver all we can possibly expect both in terms of quality and quantity. No excuses will be accepted if they don't, and I sincerely hope they are well aware of that.

We've been waiting for this for too long.

.

Considering what's been announced so far it is going to be a massive letdown inevitably. Three discs is nowhere near what I'd would expect for this box set.

Yup, but else it will be too expensive.

Assuming the two concert films are known material then this will be a meagre release.

The two discs (a'lbums') of unreleased music might be unknown to us but I do not count too much on that.

So optimistically assuming this is a fifty/fifty thing (known/new music) then we get one whole disc of new stuff.

Thus no B-sides, no long versions, 12"-stuff, remixes, alternates, etc.

.

So why not do it this way?

.

- PR the album in its remastered glory

.

- PR the album in its remastered glory plus the b-sides, long versions, 12"-stuff, alternates, etc,etc (3 discs?)

.

- PR the album in its remastered glory plus two concert films

.

Yes, `wayyyyyy too many` product choices, people will be confused but prices will be managable to people that need the differentiation.

The only thing that could give some hope is the sentence: 'The exact contents of that bonus material have not yet been announced.'

So when will the announcement be?

Or rather: how hard could it be to understand that we want it all?

the Paisley Park events! That seems like a good time to announce what all the package will include. Oh and expect several variations at different price levels: From just the album to a full set with some kind of display case. (such as a box that looks like Paisley Park: which would be a little creepy as that is what his urn looks like) or with a recreation of the vault door.

I am thinking the price will range from about $15 to about $100.

.

Why the fuck would it be something that looks like PP? PP has got ZILCH to do with PR.

.

Also, why the fuck would WBR waste money on fancy packaging when the market for a regular box set is yet to be determined? You guys look at the most extreme releases on the market for wildly popular movie franchises and then assume that such a treatment will be given to an artist who has an abysmal record when it comes to archive releases?

yes we all know when PP was built.... and why? to sell more... they take 30 cents of plastic and make it look like the vault (which did not exist as it is not then either) or PP or whatever as a "limited edition"

you accuse me of making extream assumptions? that I looked at any other set or that i even considered any other set ever released? I have bought ONE box set ever: the first Led Zepplin Box set...

But anyway I predict the set will be sold in at least 3 formats the album by itself, the album with the extras, and a special collectors set with a display box.

well yeah, it could be... given that we likley have most of it anyway. and I have wondered for years if we do not have the vast majority of what is in the vault.

but an insider did tell me 3 songs that will defiantly be on the set...she said she did not know much about the bootleg songs but did tell me 3 titles...

I really don't understand the obsession with guessing track listings and getting upset about it.

.

Soon Christmas will be here and this set will be six months old and everyone would have moved on to complaining about whatever is done next.

.

Sadly, the duration of which people spend moaning about something seems to outweight the duration at which anyone will spend enjoying this release.

For crying out loud, I've been posting examples of box sets with DOZENS of discs for months, plenty of them fairly cheap, and plenty of them involving bands and records that are nowhere near as famous as PR. A timid release would have been OK back in the mid/late-1990s as a first attempt, but now, 30+ years after its debut, it needs to be spectacular.

It would be TERRIFIC to see this release promoted in some way through a Record Store Day release, perhaps of When Doves Cry backed with a previously unreleased song...

It'd be even better to see a Prince release made a tradition on Record Store Day in the future.

I would love to see something like of the scope of the bootleg Prince: ‘A Year In The Life’ box set which has twenty discs covering Prince's work of 1986. But obviously covering the Purple Rain era, and with several concerts included.

Bugger

If this is true then no wonder Prince crossed over into insanity to break free from the majors. I'm sure it was published by Controversy Music so how on earth can Sony lay claim to it? These labels have far too much control.

Anyway, I came here looking for info of the Syracuse 85 resissue. To a 13-year-old, this VHS tape was the real deal and fingers are crossed that it'll see a blu-ray remaster/re-release. I later bought the laser disc but never got around to buying a laser disc player.

.
For the 24156156536th time:

– Publishing companies own or handle publishing rights (the right to release sheet music, for example).
– Record companies own or handle the sound recordings (eg. the master tapes) and release records.

In this case Sony owns the recording of the song, so if WB would want to release it, they would have to licence the recording from Sony. Who owns the publishing is irrelevant.

This is my record label and I know how it works.

My very first release was in 1994.

Lesson: Be careful as you don't know who is on this site. It's rumored that Prince would hop on here from time to time back in the day and again, if you are pissed enough to count to the zillions, a number you couldn't count to if you tried, then just have a seat in something that reclines and spare yourself the 'toil' of messaging.

Hi all, just wanted to post some quick thoughts of when to expect tracklist/pre-order. When Tori Amos released a deluxe version of Boys for Pele (also handled by Warner), the tracklist was leaked to Amazon around September and the album was released in November. So assuming no delays/pushbacks (which is possible) two months (April) sounds plausible. So that's not too far off. Very excited for this release, hoping to hear the full version of Father's Song. However I suspect Warner may overlook the instrumentals...

well, yes, but there were never going to be any real surprises on that remaster/deluxe,
were there?

we all knew 'motormaids' was going to be on it. the only surprised were 'sucker' and the
rookery ending to 'voodoo'.

i'm glad we have pele remastered, because despite the original sounding great imo, this
remaster does add a bit more atmosphere to an already fantastic album.

From what I know (collector circles who own the Studio trax) the version of Father's song is exactly the same version as the one heard in the Motion picture ... nothing more...no more longer or with vocals etc....!

I didn't think Motormaids would be on it, I figured Tori would've forgotten about it. And very true, if the Pele remaster is anything to go on, PR should be fantastic. (Also, always nice to meet another Tori fan smile )

Oh? Well that's slightly disappointing. I could've sworn I read somewhere (Vault book?) that a longer version existed. Nevertheless a clearer version would be nice.

EDIT: Okay, I checked The Vault book, here's what it says on Father's Song:

"Father's Song" is a calm piano instrumental with a beautiful, plaintive melody. It was recorded in Prince's home studio in October 1983, shortly before shooring of Purple Rain began. The full 5:15-minute recording of the song is awesome, fearuring several melodic elements not heard in Purple Rain or as part of "Computer Blue."

So maybe there is more than one version?
