If Prince was still here: Prince reaction to Trump?

No doubt the the United States is going through a major political and soul searching period in its history. Massive change on the political scene and questions being asked as to what it means to be 'American'.

If Prince were still alive do you think he would have reacted to what Trump is doing to the country? Prince has always let his music do the talking....

so was wondering whether you think he would have come out with new singles/music about now to reflect on the sentiments that Americans are feeling right now or even create a new song specfically directed to or about Trump?

I bet he has lots of songs in his vault that he could probably use against Trump.

Sign O the Times..... take 2 perhaps?

Great question! I want to think about it. I'm sure most people know that there were Pussy Control signs in the women's march a few weeks ago.

Maceo Parker is still alive and I doubt he'd take kindly to people stealing his name and posting stupid shit on the internet...

Prince definitely would have had something to say about the political climate and it would not have been in Trump's favor.

Prince isn't here so please, don't put words into his mouth or speculate. What I do remember him saying at one point in the last decade regarding one of the presidential races was something to the effect of "he did not have a dog in that race." You are already assuming a lot by titling this thread "Prince VS Trump." From what he has said throughout his life, Prince's leader was and always will be GOD and he was in favor of trying one's best to live in accordance to the Bible.

Not putting words into his mouth at all simply putting out the question. Think you are being overly sensitive. However in the interests of keeping the peace I have changed the title of this topic. There are plenty of pop stars who have commented on Trump just wondering what Prince reaction (if anyway) MIGHT have been.

Prince has incorporated lyrics about events, politics and society a lot in previous songs...examples include:

  • Partyup
  • Ronnie, Talk To Russia
  • Annie Christian
  • Dance On
  • We March
  • Dreamer
  • Sign O the times
  • Money dont matter tonight
  • Baltimore

Lala Escarzega already confirmed that she had conversations about Trump with Prince and Prince did not like him.

You've already lost the argument there.

Prince used his lyrics and poetry to combat issues on a social and community level, not a gov't level. He told Tavis that he didn't have a dog in this race. He wasn't political in that he was casting a vote, or endorsing a candidate. He knew gov't's handling of the people was utterly pointless. It was the people that could change things. He knew that change started in people's hearts - good change or bad change.

He lived that by investing in, supporting, and donating to charities, schools, libraries, and families in need. Sure he's addressed political issues in his songs, but in recent decades he's not really called out a POTUS. He's addressed policy and gave an alternative for change (although his simplistic "take all the guns away" notions are illogical, at best).

Politicians don't become the change they want in the world. They rule, like a dictator. Prince was the change he wanted to see in the U.S. George Michael did much of the same. MJ probably did, too although I don't remember as many stories about his philanthropy after he died the way we've heard from Prince & GM.

Prince was always about bringing people together, and has 99.9% stayed out of political conversations. I doubt he would say much about this as well, unless it was about bringing people together.

Yes thats true. So in the current climate do you think he would have released a song that would have reflected and bring people together? instead of disagreeing with each other? Also he has made it clear that him being a JW he didn't vote in elections, no maybe he would stayed quiet during this period and let it pass.

Consider that he did play a private concert for Obama at the White House, loved mingling with "leftist" Hollywood celebs, and was supportive of Black Lives Matter, even holding a Baltimore concert and releasing a song with the chant. and in these last phases of his career was completely supportive, respectful, and surrounded by women.

Not to mention he was tight with Van Jones (and many others in the media who hate Trump and think he is destroying the country), and released the song and video for Cinnamon Girl (watch the video), and called his celebration after 9/11 "Xenophobia". In fact made criticism of airport security when he performed the instrumental "Xenophobia". And also always helping out schools and supportive of education in secret ways that have now all come out. He even helped out Trayvon Martin's family.

Well, I don't think he would have supported Trump. And I'm sure he would have declined an invite to play his inauguration.

This whole thread should be locked. It's pointless. People are going to speculate what Prince would say if he was alive? We don't know what he would say. This Lala person says he didn't like Trump. Maybe he didn't like Hilary either? I don't know. But I don't think people should start using Prince to further divide people.

The Original Poster posted something about "how America feels right now." America is divided pretty much down the middle. I can only imagine that Prince's political thougths and views are varied like many of us and not easily categorized.

Prince wrote "Ronnie Talk To Russia." Maybe he would have been happy Trump is talking to Russia... Of course, we have no way of knowing what he would think. So let's not speculate on it and put words into his mouth or think we might know how he would feel.

I'm not trying to be "overly sensitive" but I feel it's wrong to use Prince for politics, he's not here to say what he would think. The country is divided enough. I don't think it helps if we start politicizing Prince and imposing our views on him. How would some of you guys feel if you saw Prince posters at Trump rallies? How about a big sign with Prince's picture that says "LET'S WORK" or "Donald talk to Russia before it's too late" or "The Gold Experience" (lol... hope you guys get the jokes). Just like America, there are Trump supporters on Prince.org too (like myself). cool

I agree with everything you said, but he also had very conservative religious beliefs and has said "He had no dog in that race" in reference to one of Obama's presidential runs (can't remember which). Let's not politicize Prince please.

He was always putting out political messages, and they are still on the record even if he is not here. There's no reasonable denial of that. "Colonized Mind" "United States of Division" etc etc...

Prince politicized his own self from time to time. You don't like part of what he did which is fine. But I'm interested in all the sides of him that he expressed in his work. Even if I disagree with some of it.

Seems like mentally you are in a juxtaposition and having an internal conflict between your love for Prince music/ideology, and what Trump believes and represents.

Well said I think its foolish to think Prince was immune to his enironment and world events. Yes he avoided politics at all costs. Its ok to say 'I dont think Prince would have any reaction to Trump...it woudn't be in his nature' which is what I am sensing so far in this thread.

Prince didn't like Trump. He would have hated what the man is doing. He performed at the White House for Obama. He supported women, always, and had bands solely comprised of women like 3EG. What was the statistic? 85% of black folks voted for Hillary? He wouldn't have sold out his race and supported a man who is getting co-signed by David Duke and the Ku Klux Klan, a man who put the leader of a fascist racist sexist website in his team and an oil tycoon as his Secretary of State.

But there's no need to speculate. Lala confirmed Prince did not like Trump. We know that.

The other thing you can do - look at the posts of literally anyone Prince ever played or performed with. Any bandmember, from Andre Cymone to Eric Leeds to Mayte to Sheila to 3EG, any member of The Revolution, the NPG, anyone. Now see if you can find one person amongst the dozens upon dozens upon dozens of former bandmembers that supports Trump. I'd put money on you not finding one. So really, that says it all.

This thread is headed down a bad path, so I'm gonna go ahead and lock
